Thank you to everyone who took part this week. We enjoyed reading your suggestions! Stars were awarded to entries which followed the challenge of giving one or more ideas to make more accessible.
Our first winner this week is fierce_raccoon of Evelyn Street Primary School. They included a range of specific measures that could be taken to make art more open to all. As you will know, we don't award competitions win for length of entry and in this case it was for the ideas in the second half. Well done!
Our second winner is compelling_mouse of Faringdon Community College. Similarly, they focussed on the task of coming up with new ideas to help people access art and explain and used good reasoning to explain why these would have a big impact.

This week's competition is focused on a topic raised in Session 3 - making art accessible to everyone.
You might have read some rather startling facts in Session 3:
There were only five black people nominated for Oscars in 2020, out of 130 nominees.
And out of 2,300 paintings in the National Gallery, only 21 are by women.
These statistics show there is still lots to be done to help people all people have the same opportunities when it comes to art.
Can you come up with an idea to open up art to more people, no matter what their background?
For example: one idea is to increase the amount of funding that is given to people who want to go to art school to encourage more people to go. What else can you think of?

I would do the example, and make people believe that they can do art, and maybe even if they try hard, their pictures can go in art galleries! I would also try to include something they like in the picture, and ask them to draw it, which might make them enjoy art. I can’t think of anything else, but the only thing left is to do more art in schools and try to make is fun other than dull, then once everyone has started to enjoy they can do their normal art lesson. This will also mean that they will be more interested in art and practice at home. This might not be the best ideas and not the clearest but that’s the best I could do.

Everyone should make art, no matter what . Their race, their skin or their background. It doesn't matter. Everyone has a different category of art they like. We are all different and have unique personalities. Art is made by imagination . If you ever want to become an artist , you should have a growth mindset and have a creative imagination. Art is accessible to anyone of any age. Anyone. It’s not the law that only white propel can do art . Black people can do amazing things you’ve never dreamed of. Artists like Kerry James Marshall and Kara walker . Kerry has made “De Style” He made it because in his time there weren’t a lot of black people making art. It was mostly white. Art Workshops are made for anyone. They might have some disabilities but you don’t know what they can do in the future . And out of 2,300 paintings in a gallery were made by 21 women. It’s not also just about people’s skin color, sometimes people say that men can do better then women. And this year only 5 black people were nominated for the Oscars . I’m not sure if it’s the lack of black people not doing it or someone is dragging them down . You never know . Some young adults dreams is to go to art school but sometimes they have to give it up for their family. It’s not fair . Family does matter but your dreams matter as well .But you should never give up. Those dreams will come true some day , you never know what awaits you in the future. Life changing chances could be there as well. Art can be anything .It doesn’t have to be art that people like .Its yours. Not there’s .You have the power to make art .It can be unusual ,weird or unique. It might not be great to some people’s eyes but to others it can be influential and inspiring. Anyone can make big changes to the Art Industry . So if you want to be an Artist , go for it!
In my perspective, I think it is outrageous how there is a lack of equality in this world. However, my solution to enhance more equality would be to compose more high-quality schools which accept bursaries and scholarships for the less-privileged people. Due to racism, people of a particular ethnic group to white would be more or less shun, which would affect their education. Therefore, I think governments should fabricate more schools to enhance other ethnic group's intelligence! Another solution I would recommend would be to have workshops or conventions which inspire other ethnic groups about amazing role models. For example, Maya Angelou was a black woman. However, she still succeeded to be great in life. Another representation would be Anne Frank. She was discriminated for being Jewish yet she managed she stand up for her rights and become a well-known girl. She was the one voice for the thousands of poor Jews killed in the Holocaust. Sexism is also quite an unjust thing. Margaret Higgins was a women activist. She is a role model to inspire people to fight for what belongs to them. I think to motivate this, they should compose art lessons for a payable fee like £10- £15. This would be for girls only. At the end of the enjoyable art session, there would be a minor Youth Club to let the female express their speculations and perspectives about sexism and human rights. In conclusion, I think it is VERY important to listen to every voice because it echoes throughout the world. Just like Malala Yousafzai, the girl who was shot due to her gender or perhaps Frida Kahlo, one of the soon-to-be-many successful female artists. Therefore, just because you are told you cannot do something, does not mean you won't. "It always seems IMPOSSIBLE until it is done" ~ Nelson Mandela.

It would be a good idea to be more diverse and less sexist so it can encourage people of different cultures and women to be more interested or involved in art.
In a culture that celebrates children, the impression that you have to have "made it" in your 20’s or also 30’s in an inventive path not only is false but also puts an unhealthy amount of stress on creatives to deliver to the point of exhaustion. What’s more, it keeps older creatives from even pursuing an artistic path at all. It can be easy to get sucked into a dark abyss of internet comparisons with other people who developed skills before you in life. To think, “why even bother?” To think you are already underdeveloped or it’s “too late.” No matter your age—whether you are 18 or 75 it’s easy to feel behind.

I would have a blindly-judged art competition. All the artists would keep their artwork a secret.Before hand, the artists would take a picture of themselves in the process of completing it, and keep that picture in an envelope. Once the competition is delivering the awards, votes have been cast, judges have decided etc, the artists reveal their envelopes. The envelopes stop other artists cheating and are proof that the artists did their art. This makes the the competition purely based on talent alone, with no bias or discriminatory judgements.
I, as with many other BNC members, are quite sickened at the lack of equality in our world currently but as many recent posts have addressed, I think art is a brilliant way to speak up and oppose the inequality. Many pieces of art throughout history have just done that, one of my favourite feminist artists being May Stevens. Art in general can make a tremendous impact on the way people view things. For example, Italian writer Fallaci described art as "a mainspring of life and courage." Because of this it seems a no brainer that everyone should have access to art with no bias toward the artists ethnicity, race, gender etc. But of course, for many that's currently not an option which is incredible disappointing. However, it is my belief that the youth, our generation and the generation that will go on to be our world's leaders should have their own hand at art. If children and young adults grow up protecting and creating artworks that express their views and positivity in general then the future will indefinitely be a better one.
In my opinion, we are all art. Every single being in the world can make art. Our knowledge of the arts is what makes us different from animals. Art is the thread that sews the world together. It doesn't necessarily have to be a thing that you can see, touch and sense. It can be a feeling or emotion. Different perspectives give different points of view, and much to express and talk about. It doesn't matter if someone's religion, skin colour or their social circumstances, what matters is that everyone deserves to have their opinions heard, and not get at for their differences. In truth, everyone on Earth is equal, and should have equal rights, and be treated as such. Being different is normal and unique at the same time. We are all different. Some people may have similar habits, but in a certain point of view each and everyone of us are distinctive in our own way. We can achieve anything, from just looking at it from a different point of view. In fact, you may realise that you have already achieved that passion that you crave. The following are examples of day-to-day discrimination –
•receiving poorer service at stores or restaurants;
•being treated with less courtesy and respect;
• being treated as less intelligent or less trustworthy.
Discrimination should be halted immediately, and the government should act, fast. They need to help people focus on their strengths. So I would create a new law, stating that in any competition, announcement, or anything else, discrimination is hereby banned. It should be fair and unbiased. This law should be put into place immediately. However, the government are already struggling to keep the coronavirus at bay, so I have come up with another set of ideas. Artists, sculptures, chefs and musicians alike are suffering from the same unfortunate fate. Therefore, worldwide, anyone in any challenge or something like that should have equal competition. For example, in a drawing competition, the rivalry would have to be someone of similar rank, who may be facing similar outcomes. Each of them will say what they are going to try to draw first-hand, so that no prejudiced events occur. If they change their mind of what they are drawing, they will consult the judges, who get a say but the crowd can vote. Even if the crowd are discriminatory, for one thing they wouldn't be allowed, and for another, they won't be able to choose freely between them. Therefore, the competitors won't be discriminated, and get a say in their moral life. "Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. However it's important these laws are always enforced and everyone's behaviour makes sure that it doesn't happen without realising, or in situations where the law cannot practically get involved. Well done for raising such an important point!
My idea to help more people enjoy ,do and enjoy art is to encourage them.
I would encourage people by showing them what other people have achieved, and to show lots of art work giving them ideas on what they could achieve or do.
I would also make it less expensive to get into and go to art school because then more people who want to do art can then come, because sometimes to get into a art school you would have to pay a lot money but if you made it less expensive then anybody who wasn't able to pay for it then can now pay for it.
It should also be fair that anybody is allowed to go to art school because you shouldn't leave other people out because of there background as that would be rude and it would make people feel like they shouldn't and can't join because of what people might say.
It also wouldn't be about having the best artwork it would be about how much effort you put into your artwork and how hard you try because life isn't all ways about being the best it is about what you do to make it the best for you.

Everyone should have the opportunity to show of their art or their creative skills. If I had the power, I would guarantee that every single person - who feels like they are left out - will have a huge opportunity to paint and show their art. The first thing I would do is open a club for people who want to show their art to the world. During this club, people will have all the supplies they need to produce an amazing piece of art. You may feel left out because you have been excluded and/or rejected by a group of friends or coworkers. It is normal to feel pain when you are excluded or rejected because we are all in need of social belonging. Social rejection can bring on feelings of anger, anxiety, depression, sadness, and jealousy.

My idea for promoting the arts for everyone is to have more art clubs and lessons in school so that the young can be inspired to carry on as an adult. This way, art will become more popular and undertaken by all sorts of people around the world, instead of just a few.

We could help by fundraisers
Art is something you create - anyone can make it. Everyone has the right to create a masterpiece, even women. It might not get into a gallery, but you should think it is a masterpiece!! After school clubs are a great way to make younger children get into art, and loving what it is. If you already create art; maybe ask to donate just a bit to fundraisers, giving children and adults more supplies. Believe in yourself, your art might get into a gallery; you'll be famous! Just wait for the time to come. Here's what I would do ::
1. Get a fundraiser, and donate.
2. If I meet anyone, looking for a career, art!
you can do anything. Art isn't just painting. It's your creativity.

in my opinion every single human no matter there gender or skin colour should be able to enjoy doing art and maybe even go on to make a career out of it. but if people want to do other things go for it but if u want to do art you do art and always follow your dreams no matter what anyone says you be you.
And if u cant practise at school maybe try practising at home or maybe u can attend art classes
Anyone can create art. I think Van Gogh was successful because his paintings were very inspirational for some people and they spoke to them.
HOW to become a successful artist?
1) Be motivated - this step is key because if you were a lazy person and you had no motivation to paint, I'd say the painting would turn out to be less extraordinary than others.
2) Being able to give your art morals and secret meanings - this really engages the person admiring your piece and it will make them want to see more from you.
3) Be confident - being confident is one of the most important things you need to do in order to become a SUCCESSFUL artist. If you doubt yourself a lot or insult things you have put effort into, then an artist might not be the best career for you. I think you must be proud of things that you put effort into, big or small.
4) Being able to sell your art / have it in an art museum - Although it's about creativity not money, it can be very helpful to actually make a living out of your art. Some people will be willing to pay money for your artwork! But just remember, very successful artists like Vincent Van Gogh only made ONE sale and that was to his relative.
Some people are thought to have no access to making art just because of their background story. How can we change this?
There are many different types of art: writing, acting, comedy, architecture, ceramics, cooking, theatre, dance, song writing... I could go on. But some people think only certain people can participate in these acts, which we need to change. Here's how...
1) Increase funding to art classes and encourage more people to go. This could be achieved by using advertisements or simply teaching more art in schools. Many people that want to participate in art classes can't afford it (some art tutors charge £35-£60 an hour!)
2) Suggest more art-based after school / before school clubs. This encourages children to start learning how to sing, dance, paint, write, act and even more! That could be very beneficial for them.
3) Fundraisers to provide young people with art supplies
4) Make museum and gallery visits free on certain days (e.g there could be a day for children to come and express their artistic skills of any kind, and upgrade the system for people with disabilities) Because isn't that what art is all about? Making sure that everyone experiences it atleast once? :)

To encourage people of all backgrounds to do art, I would like to see more of it in schools. We will then determine how we want to see it, what it makes us feel and have a look at its origins/background. A piece of art, whether it's a dance, theatre production, a drawing, music etc, all have something in common. They all have a story too them. By going into further detail and discovering more about the artist, this can depict its past. Perhaps a religious person, woman, someone of a different ethnicity/skin colour has made the art, and it's good to be aware of this. In my personal opinion, it would be good to have a section/specialist for each exhibit so if you are intrigued about a topic, you could ask/read about the piece. As a BNC member, I think that everybody should be able to do and accuse art and its supplies. No matter what their race , skin colour , appearance should be able to do what they want in this day and age without being judged. I thought we were past all of that. In my opinion, we should send in people from different back rounds to do workshops and they should tell us what their experiences were in doing art. Also , we should be able to do some fundraisers so raise money by having like own clothes day and you give in a donation to be able to purchase art supplies.

To make art more accessible to all no matter what disabilities or background, art schools could make their funds a bit cheaper so bring the price down a bit so it could be easier for some people to afford. But I understand that might not be possible. Also to get children more interested at museums/art galleries there could be a little activity like a hunt so they have to look closely at the art to spot a certain part then tick it off on their sheet. If they find all of them then at the end on the way out they can collect a prize like a small paintbrush and a pot of paint or some crayons to get them to be creative. Also in multi-story art galleries there could be a lift if there isn't already because just because someone is in a wheelchair doesn't mean they can't like and appreciate art. Places like schools and children's community centres could have amateur artists in. Ones that maybe don't have many pieces in museums and such so it is more likely that they can come and talk because they aren't super SUPER busy. They might inspire young people to be creative and make things. There could be arty after school clubs where there is something you have to make/paint and you can use any materials in the room because there will be a lot. Then they can be creative in more ways. To include people of different backgrounds there could be a showing of art by black people and people from different ethnic groups. There could also be one for art by just women.
If i ran a art gallery , some people can't read so i would put what it says in the pictures in some head phones so they can listen to it instead of trying to read it .
Everybody should be able to do art no matter what gender, colour or religion they are. I think a way for everyone to be able to do art is to make places outside, with all the things they need, where anyone can make or put their art work for people to see.
I think people should be allowed to do art anywhere and even where you are.Believe it or not only 21 woman out of 230o people of the national gallery are painted and artist should be rated with their paintings out of all of them
I think that everyone has a right to make art whoever they are. There is no such thing as bad art and no one can call someone elses art bad.

I think that we all should be allowed to do art because we all have a talent inside us.You might have a different opinion on what art is . Someone could think its shapes the could think its sport . There should be no borders we can not cross for art. For all people we are all art. We are all different . No one is the same we are all different.
My personal idea to stop this nonsense , is to not look at the person who did the piece but look at the beauty of the piece. Gender and backgrounds have nothing to do with art. It what the person wants to do. You might like the piece of someone from a different gender from you did. So anyone can do art . No one can't do art.
I also think that you can do competitions anyone can do. I think its a good idea as no one can't do art.
My idea is every art gallery should have a day where they only put up art that is made by black people, women or people who don’t get appreciated because of their artwork but the identification of the person who made the art is kept a secret and then at the end a survey will take place. That way we can have a fair test to find out who should be nominated or have their work put up in display. This is something that I think all the art gallery’s should do and we can all appreciate the art that everyone makes and some of that artwork can inspire a child that wants to go to art school.

I think promoting an interest in art across the world would be a good idea. I think this because if more people are interested in art, especially from a younger age, then more people will want to get involved in the arts. I would promote an interest in art through educational programs and workshops all over the world. I would then give more money to art schools, this means that the art schools can lower the price, therefore making them more accessible. I agree with fierce racoon on his point about how you need to be confident as an artist because you can not keep doubting yourself because then you will be less motivated to do art and you won't enjoy it. I would also make a program that promotes confidence across the world because of this. All of these things will open up the arts to more people.
I think that this is a great topic to discuss as it is terrible that there is so much racism and lack of equality in the world as we speak. Here is what I think we can do to help and get ore people involved in art, no matter what race, background or colour:
In the theatre: As you may or may not know, the price for theatre tickets are really expensive and not everyone can afford them. So, one way is to lower the prices of these tickets, so that more people have a chance to go. Another example is people with a disability or wheelchairs. Usually, they sit at the end of the rows, but why not a special section for people with wheelchairs and their family? The next example is people who are deaf. They cant enjoy the experience because of their hearing loss. We could add people at the side of the stage who know sign-language so they can know what's happening.
Festivals and workshops: Why not have online festivals like we talked about in a previous competition? That way, you don't have to pay money to see it ad people with low income van still enjoy! Using the same scenario, but with workshops, what is some cant afford it? Or doesn't have a car to get there? These can go virtual too!
