Written standpoint on AI

As time is passing, it can be noticed that AI has undergone a major development in terms of performance and capability, as at first, AI models weren’t even capable of generating a sensible clip and after a few years of constant improvements, AI models generate some realistic and convincing deepfakes. What cannot be left unnoticed, though, is that the training and data centres use immense amounts of energy for cooling the servers and data processing, using about 2% of the world’s electricity, while emitting a lot of carbon dioxide (for ChatGPT: 260,930 kilograms per month). So, the question is, whether AI has more good or harmful sides considering its possibilities and sustainability. In my opinion, AI has more perspective in the future by serving humans.

At first, it has to be mentioned that, as AI has been improving thoroughly over time, more climate-friendly AI-models could be developed, such as the Chinese-developed AI-model DeepSeek R1, using about 70% less electricity than the conventional AI-models, according to the company itself because the model was trained more efficiently, while still being on a competitive and even superior level than other models, for instance OpenAI’s ChatGPT o1. This gives a perspective that future AI-models might be better for the climate and therefore becoming even more popular in their usage.

Moreover, it must be considered that AI is already integrated into our every-day life gravely, such as in anti-crash systems of cars, the algorithms of many apps and programs as well as in security systems and other governmental services. Here, it can be seen, what perspectives AI has, in terms of transforming human’s lives toa better standard. Complex processes could be simplified and improved, bureaucracy might be decreased and security increased, therefore providing a brighter future for humanity, when involving AI into the perspective of the future.

However, arguments to be weighed against are, what people worrying about the climate might say, the huge amounts of energy used and carbon dioxide emitted by data centres or training grounds of those AI models, such as mentioned above. This is especially concerning, as one of today’s most important topics is global warming and climate change.

I believe AI offers significant advantages for humanity, enabling a leap towards modernization and perfection in daily life. Its integration is crucial as it enhances work efficiency and productivity, while also promoting climate-friendly options, paving the way for a better future.
