Do international alliances always make the world safer, or can they sometimes lead to more tension?

Well, many view alliances as something that only brings world peace and unity, but can this always be the truth?
Really think about it, imagine having a class divided into 'cliques', the 'lonely' ones would have a higher tendency of being treated badly by the many cliques. And diving into the real life aspect, international alliances just create more tension because if one country from alliance A attacks another country from alliance B and both alliances are very strong forces, the whole of allliance B would have to attack that country and then the whole of alliance A will have to attack the whole of alliance B and if these two alliances are very strong like the NATO alliance or the EU as I mentioned, this could lead to a very hectic world war.
So even if an alliance could protect its members, and provide more aid for weaker countries, I still stand by the fact that international alliances just increase tension because we are never going to know when one of the alliances might get provoked.
