“If prisons aren't fit for purpose, then prisons should be set free.”

I will be sharing my standpoint on prisons. It is an important topic because it tells us about the unsafety of prisons and how we have to be safe in public. In addition, it is an important topic because it shows us about how Fito (or Jose Adolfo Macias Villamar) escaped from prison on January 7th 2024, and on 8th January, Ecuador was declared in a state of emergency.

Some people might agree with this statement as if criminals aren't doing reformations, they aren’t learning anything good so they will just carry on doing crimes. Another reason is if the Ecuadorian prisons are comfortable, they will think they are not having a consequence, but are having a reward for their crimes. Clearly, prisons are not fit for purpose and the prisons are not fit to live in by criminals.

Alternatively, others may disagree with this statement because if they're very dangerous, they will never learn anything about being a good citizen and will carry on doing crimes, which means the public will not be safe and there is a high risk of overflowing prison cells. In addition, the victims will evidently need justice for what they have experienced.

In my opinion, I disagree with this statement as if they are released from prisons, they will only do bigger crimes and will think they will get away with it if they do another one. It is unfair for the people who have committed minor crimes, for they have to pay a large fine or an even bigger consequence and the people who have committed large crimes have no punishment. It should be the other way. In the future, I hope that prisons can be inspected regularly and everything can be kept secure with reliable security guards.
