Syria: What should happen to Syrian refugees?

Since 2011 there have been more than 14 million Syrian refugees fleeing from their home country. The Assad regime was the worst phase for Syrian people. Those who had to flee could now go back to their home country. Some Syrians have already been forced back to Syria. The nig question is: What should happen to Syrian refuges?

In my opinion, Syrian refugees should be given an option to decide, whether they want to go back to Syria and support their motherland and help Syria rebuild itself or if they want to stay where they have already settled. The first reason I have for my opinion is that they have already settled in Syria and it wouldn’t be appropriate to force them back to Syria. For example, forced returns can lead returnees to be further displaced and marginalized or even worse of them then fleeing again. The second reason, why Syrian refugees should be given an option whether they want to return to Syria or not is that some of the people that fled from Syria are traumatised and don’t and even can’t go back to Syria because of what they went through or are still going through. They are not able to go back to Syria, because of depression or PTSD. For example, up to 30% of Syrian refugees experience clinical depression and 50 – 57% experience PTSD. That means if they are forced back to Syria, they could fall into deep depression or worse even end their life.

All in all I think that Syrian refugees should be given the option to decide whether they want to go back to Syria and help to rebuild the country or if they don’t want to come back because they have already settled or aren’t mentally able to go back.

Thank you.

  • You've presented a strong argument about giving Syrian refugees the choice to stay or return . I completely agree that forcing them back could be harmful , especially for those PSTD and depression , your statistics really highlight the severity of this issue. Another key factor is whether Syria is truly safe and stable for returnees . Many areas are still struggling with conflict and economic instability , making it difficult for the people to rebuild their lives . Instead of focusing on forced returns, countries hosting refugees should work on long term solutions like better integration programs , education and mental health support . Also most of the time I have this thought in my mind that whether governments and international organizations are doing enough to help Syrian refugees build a secure future?

  • I believe syrian refugees should be allowed to stay in their new environment unless they want to return home. I say this because they should be allowed to stay where that are at because that is the precaution they took to be away from danger and to forcefully bring them back where they experienced traumatic things it dead wrong.

  • Syrian refugees should be able to see and analyze the Syrian government and should be able to decide if they want to go back to Syria due to it being their homeland and a safe environment. It should be the persons option if they don't feel like going back to Syria they should be able to and stay where they are currently staying. We shouldn't force them to go back to Syria.
