#25 - Behind the Headlines - Winners Announced!

Thank you for all the wonderful entries this week. There was plenty of scepticism on show as you dissected the headlines, exploring what they could mean and what else we needed to know.
Our Primary winner this week is champion_seahorse of Birchwood Primary School. They wrote very clearly on what their headline could mean, using the wording to read between the lines, and then outlined several specific things that we'd need to be aware of.
Our Secondary winner is humorous_wolverine of Hornsey School for Girls. They argued that the statistic about 73% willing to pay more for the NHS was far from conclusive - asking many questions about where the number came from and why we should be cautious about it.

Headlines try to be eye-catching and attention-grabbing. They try to get a message across quickly. It's important to pause and work out what the headline writers are up to, and how far we should agree.

Part of me choses ''WORLD'S DOCTORS AND NURSES ARE TOLD-THE NHS NEEDS YOU!''-The Independent.
I think that it is using direct speech to really connect with the reader, also to show that the headline and the article is talking to us as readers. They may have done this so that we know that it can effect us and that we should also think about what they are talking about. I think that before we come to a judgement, we would need to know why they need us.
However the other part of me likes the one about ''NHS BATTLE PLAN TO SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES''-Daily Express. This to me shows how much the NHS are trying to help our country, help the sick and the people who need it. Also the use of the word 'BATTLE' indicates how hard they NHS are trying. The connotations of battle are fighting, keep going, never giving up and being persistence, which show that hey NHS really want to help them and aren't going to give up.
I will be using scepticism on the quote, “NHS BATTLE PLAN TO SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES” by the Daily Express.
I think it is trying to make us think that the NHS are being very serious about what they do to help us. I have predicted this because of the word ‘battle’ and the phrase ‘millions of lives’. The word battle makes it seem as the NHS want to help us, and is a very powerful word as it makes people want to read on. The phrase millions of lives make it seem as the NHS are going to help everyone, it makes the reader think that this ‘battle plan’ is going to help save everybody. Bob of these things make it look like the NHS have created an amazing plan to save everyone in the UK.
What we need to know before we assume are, what is this plan? Is it really going to save millions of people? When will the NHS finish the plan or isn’t it finished? I asked these questions for we do not have all the information we need, there for we will not have any reasons to back our opinion, or you could t even make an opinion at all. I asked the first question, because all it says is battle plan, it doesn’t tell us anything about this plan, just that it is described as a battle. I asked the second question because the phrase millions of people is quite over exaggerated, and may make people disappointed if they do not save as many as the Daily Express make it seem. Finally, I asked the third question because the plan could be for the future, in over 50 years, or the plan could be out now. This affects how people will react, also putting premier on the NHS. If the plan was out now, they would feel pressure that people think they will save millions of lives, or they might be pressured to get the plan out at a certain time. All of this comes down to the quote, and how it can be misleading to some people.

It is trying to make us think that we need more staff in the NHS and are trying to make us join not force and also I think it is a bold headline and when you read the newspaper then on the front it has a bold and it kind of connects with the reader it is not forcing them to do it but they are asking kind of in a way! I find it interesting and people can maybe think when the NHS started it was small and cause of the tax some of it goes the NHS and then it started to grow and grow to where it is now today! Before concluding we need to know why the NHS needs us! Jobs?...

p.s. I did not like the news! But when we started burnet news I found it fascinating and I am always wondering what is going on in other countries!
My opinion is: “73% WOULD PAY MORE TO SAVE THE NHS”
This is because many doctors and nurses are quitting their jobs and moving to different countries to find a better paying job. Doctors and nurses don’t earn enough. Without doctors and nurses the NHS will have to close. Without the NHS people will have to pay for their healthcare. If that person is poor they won’t be able to pay ‘for their health’ hence they might get ill.
So the phrase means that many people would give donation to the NHS to keep it running.
" NHS BATTLE PLAN TO SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES" - Daily Express is the headline that I think is important. I think this is because the NHS do so much to help everyone and the headline that the Daily Express have given their newspapers shows that. The words 'Battle' and 'Plan' in the heading show that the NHS are really trying to fight for people's lives risking their own and doing what is right for our country because there a cases is all around the world right now and illnesses that are transferring over to different people like the coronavirus which started in China. The NHS is treating lots of people so that they can get better even if if the doctors nurses or members of staff who treat patients get ill because of what they were doing what matters to them most is that the patient is well. So, to conclude, the heading from the Daily Express is the one that I think is the most beneficial.
I’m very skeptical about this head line “ NHS BATTLE PLAN TO SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES”. The nhs try there very best for us to live a healthy life. The word battle is really strong and because of the Corona Virus , they have to set up clinics to help people who might have the virus. It makes me feel empathetic because being a nurse or a surgeon or a doctor is really difficult . You have to decide what to do with the patient or give the patient the right medicine . Their battle plan sounds like they have an idea in mind and that could save millions of people who are suffering . We are very lucky to have the NHS because other countries do not have it and are losing innocent people’s lives. The NHS know what they’re doing and doing what it takes to help us and the world alive .

I question this whenever I see it ... questions bubble up in my head like : What if the person doesn’t have a phone or any technology? What if the person is to ill too even croak out a word to anyone let alone pick up anything? Who even “told” the NHS to even do this and why? And finally Why through “video-link”?
I think before we jump straight to a conclusion/judgment we need to know WHY the appointments should be through video link well , maybe the government doesn’t want doctors nor citizens to go outside (what I mean by doctors not going outside is no home appointments but yet again why ? Well probably because of some illnesses......

I chose "NHS BATTLE PLAN TO SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES" - Daily Express because it's really catchy, short and fast. Headlines are supposed to draw lots of attention and need to be attractive like this.
It makes us think that the NHS (National Health Service) are working their socks off trying to save up to a million people's lives at once. Ignoring all the technology we have, it would be beyond impossible to make that happen.
I know this because for the past few weeks the top news has been about the NHS workers working to hard.
If they then get an injury who will be able to look after them?
"NHS BATTLE PLAN TO SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES" - Daily Express is the headline I chose. I think it's trying to makes us think about the hard work and effort that the nurses and doctors put into the NHS, making us have empathy for them. Before making a judgement, I suggest we find out what the so called 'battle plan' is and how exactly is is planning to save 'millions of lives' and then we should question whether it will really work or not. Therefore, we can make an educated judgement or argument.
I chose "NHS CUTS 15,000 BEDS IN 6 YEARS" -daily mail.I think that this phrase is trying to make the NHS look bad or make it seem like they are very bad at doing their jobs and saving people.This phrase has very little words its short and snappy and makes me want to find out more about this but, I don't think this title would be enough I can't understand it until the story is told.Why did they cut the beds?Did they have a good reason to cut the beds?Did they actually cut the beds?These are some things I am sceptical about.In school when we talked about the NHS we learnt that they don't have much money.The doctors, nursers and more spend LOADS and LOADS of money on equipment- beds are one thing.Heres a question.What is more important- you're well being or a bed?This title is criticising the NHS and I don't think this is an appropriate title for a newspaper.THE NHS IS DOING THERE BEST TO SAVE MONEY-RESPECT THAT THEY ARE TRYING TO SAVE YOU!!!

This headline is trying to tell us that the independent think that the NHS are struggling and need to send for help. It is trying to make us alarmed and act on the situation and showing how big their issue is. It is a very strong headline especially with the words Needs You. It appeals to the readers interest most of the time.
What we need to know before we come to a judgement is how much of an issue they are in and if this information is correct because( in the last issue) I learned that newspapers are based on opinions. I would like to hear this from the NHS staff or managers so it is definitely correct because newspapers aren’t the most reliable source. The most reliable would be the NHS themselves.

I have chosen"73% would pay more to save the NHS" -Daily Mirror. This shows that more than half of the population is proud to use the NHS in our country meaning they would like to keep it running.
If the NHS did close as they do not have enough staff or money to manage, that would mean that if you fall ill suddenly, you would have to pay for treatment on the spot. If you can not afford to price, you would not be able to get the treatment that could be lifesaving.
Also, staff are leaving the NHS as they are not getting paid enough, so if 73% were to pay extra or to give donations, this could pay the staff more. This means that more people would want to work for the NHS.

I am sceptical about this because It's taken from a General Kitchener statement from WWI where he is trying to convince people to join the army. This is an evident example of hyperbole which makes me question the facts and the truthfulness of this headline. Also joining the NHS needs lots of qualifications and training which may take time and are they trained enough to English standards if they're from another country.

I am sceptical about this because doctors have to consult a patient properly by listening to their heart and seeing wether they can breathe properly; consulting a patient through a video call, on the other hand, won't let the doctor consult the properly. Also, some illnesses can't be seen so, if the video call isn't clear, the patient won't be given the correct advice or prescriptions leading to further health problems.
I am sceptical about the headline " the doctor will see you by skype up to 30m NHS appointments will be through video link." because it wouldn't work for lots of cases as many issues cant be visibly seen and doctors may need to run tests on patient and they can't do that through video call. As well less people now use skype than n the past, therefore many people wouldn't have access in that way and would have to go in person anyway. Skype has not got the best video quality so at times it would be hard to show your issue over skype. This is also using hyperbole as it doesn't seen possible to have that many people's situations able to be solved over skype. This makes me question the truth of this statement.

What is it trying to make us think?
The words ‘save the NHS’ makes me think that the NHS is not doing so well and that it needs someone to step in and save it. It makes me feel like the NHS is on the verge of dying. Adding the statistic of 73% makes me think that the majority of people like the NHS and think it is a great thing for the country. It also makes me think that the public’s money is enough to solve all of the NHS’s difficulties.
What else do we need to know before we come to a judgment?
We first need to know what the 73% refers to. Does it refer to 73% of the entire UK population? Does it refer to 73% of the elderly? Does it refer to 73% of people who need important surgery? Without knowing this, it is impossible to know what the headline is actually saying.
We also need to know how much more people would be willing to pay. In some cases, that might be just a tiny amount more whereas in others they might be willing to pay a lot more.
I think we also need to know what ‘saving the NHS’ looks like. Would it mean having access to a hospital or doctor for the smallest issue? Would it mean cutting down waiting times to zero? Or does it just mean keeping the NHS up and running as it is at the moment?
Without knowing these facts, it is impossible to understand the headline properly.

I think that they are trying to make you think that the NHS is doing everything they can to save people from the Corona Virus. Even though I do feel they are making a good effort I do feel that this title is a bit misleading. I say this because I feel that they are not containing it enough and if there was the so called ‘battle plan’ then they would be working more efficiently and saving more people.
Another thing I find misleading is the fact that they are saying that not only millions of people would catch the virus but also that millions would die without the previously mentioned ‘battle plan’. I feel that this is a very pessimistic view on the matter as the Corona Virus may not become a full-blown epidemic, even though there is no evidence that this will actually become a reality.
Despite me being negative about the action that the NHS is taking I do feel that we are immensely lucky to have the NHS and I do feel everybody needs to appreciate them for how much work that they do.

This is trying to help us know that people really like the NHS, they respect it and they want to keep it. It also tells people that work in the NHS that people appreciate them and they support them, even though it is very hard and stressful to work in places like a hospital.
However, we need to know what the percentage is of. For example, it could be 73% of NHS workers. These people would obviously want more money put into their work. As well as this, we need to know how much more they would want to pay. They could be saying that members of the public would be only be willing to give the NHS an extra few pounds to save it - but this wouldn't make a difference to the overall need for more funding in the NHS. Another thing that we to know is how they would want to give more money. Would they give more money in their taxes or would they be willing to pay more for prescriptions? Finally, we need to know how much of those people would have enough money to give more to the NHS. They might want to give more, but they might be financially unable to.

I think that the are trying to get the message across that the NHS are serious about their job and want to save as many lives as possible.They are trying to state that they are planning to do something that they want to accomplish.Even though it says that he NHS are planning to save millions of lives they already have saved lots of lives.Before coming to a decision or a judgment you would have to know what the NHS is and will need to know what they do and what it stands for.You would also have to know how many people they have saved and what treatment the give because then you would know why they are planning to save millions of lives and where the mistakes are being made.

Also, if this is not from the NHS and is just someone's opinion, then they have no right to say this for the NHS. I am sceptical about this because, from my many visits to Medway Maritime Hospital(which is run by the NHS) they do not seem short staffed. In fact, I saw people just moping around the hallway as if they had no idea what to do. This shows that the headline shouldn't really be there.(That is, if the purpose of it IS to recruit more people.)

NHS was since 1950 but last year there was no NHS so you needed to buy or there is no healing, you would have died. But until now around 1.5 million people working for the NHS so it will be much quicker.

I know people can change their minds on this but I know not everyone will. Now, I feel like that some headlines aren't the exact truth. A lot of people do believe most things they read.

No, some articles may be truthful most aren't. Most headlines try and make us feel a certain way. In this headline it tries to say that most people want a better health care and that they wish to have a better chance on being cured.

What is it trying to make us think?
The phrase save millions makes me think that the NHS are pushing themselves to save millions of people although they are lacking docters and nurses. It also makes me think that no matter what is happening in the world around them, they are going to try to save everyone they can. Battle plan to save lives makes me think about how many lives they usually save
What else do we need to know before we come to a judgement?
I need to know how much millions mean. Could it just be 1 million? Or could it be 5 million? could it also be 3 million? Without knowing this, I will not know if they are setting a huge target because they want to save people or a tiny amount because they cannot achieve other goals. I also need to know what NHS battle plan really means because the headline shows that they have not achieved saving millions of lives if they are currently challenging themselves to save many lives.

I think this headline is persuading people to trust the NHS and to believe in them that they are ready to save our lives as they know what they are doing and they have a plan. I think this headline is giving us information about what the NHS are planning to do. I think that they are trying to say that the NHS are serious about their job and they are willing to save our lives. Before coming to a judgement you should see that the NHS has already saved many of our lives already. This shows that they are able to save millions of lives again.

I think that this proposal means that the NHS needs more workers because we rely on the NHS and there needs to be more workers to treat all of us so in a way we also need them too! I am very sceptical about this because as loyal - shark said in his comment I always see doctors walking around the NHS not actually doing their job and just wandering around all confused.
So this is why I think that this headline is not really true unless it is in the sense to get more staff.

It is trying to make us think that we can stay home while we are having an appointment. It is also trying to make us think that we can have a shorter appointment if we are in a rush, or if we have any plans for that day.
What else do we need to know before we come to a judgment?
We need to know many things before we say if this statement is true or not. For example: does it work in all hospitals? What if there are people who do no use or have Skype? Would the government even allow it? Would people support, or not support it? All things we should be mindful and sceptical about.
Continued from above...it's unfair because you know the coranovirus is going around and you're telling them to contact you by video link.That can spread what if you have children that's a safety hazard.You can't just trust everything you hear you need to have doubts but not all the time. You should find out about it first and dig deeper.

We need to know why the NHS’S goal is to reach saving millions of people. We also need to know how much people they are saving.It can be 5 million,3 million,maybe even 10 million.We need to know what their plan will look like.

This headline is trying to make us think that the NHS is in danger and we need to save it . They want to make us think that most of our population wants to help ,but is that really the case? It makes me feel like they are scared of dying and wants us to to save them by doing all the work for them .
Before coming to any kind of judgment you need to make sure everything is100% true for example do 73% of people actual want to help? When it states ‘ pay more ‘ are they willing to pay much or just a tiny little bit. We also need to know that if we succeed in saving it how will the NHS will improve or will it stay the same .
In conclusion without knowing this information there is no way you fully understand the headline enough to believe it.

What is it trying to make us think?
The headline is trying to make us think that the NHS are having difficulties. They want to make us think that 73% of people want to help them. It makes me feel that they are afraid of dying and they want people to help them grow.
What else do we need to know before we come to a judgement?
We need to take into consideration that 73% is just an estimate and they are not being specific. It could be 73% of children? It could be 73% of elderly? It could be anything. And the word 'saving', it could be saving people's lives or it could mean saving the actual NHS. Are people willing to pay more than 1p?That's the question you should be asking.

I don't get what the NHS can do about someone over the internet unless they are booking an appointment not actually doing one. The point is that if you have to show the doctor something or if they need to do a test on you it is a bit hard to do that over a phone or computer.
How would they make this work especially if someone has faulty signal on their phone or something, also how could they get a prescription?
But it would be easier for someone that can't get out the house so they could talk over the phone but doctors and nurses could go over there to help them. So there is a 50-50% chance of this working

I believe that it is trying to make us think that the people on the front line ( such as doctors or nurses) have direct input into decisions like these and can decide whether to cut beds or not. Also, this headline is trying to make the NHS look like they do not want to help everyone .
Before we make a judgement, we need to take into consideration the fact that the NHS do not have the money to have a massive amount of beds per hospital. We also need to consider the fact that there is 1257 hospitals in the UK. This means that only 15 beds per hospital have been cut. In the great scheme of things, this is not very many beds. We also need to think about the amount of time that this happened in. The beds were cut over a period of six years. This equates to an average of 2500 cuts per year-which is not a high amount.
In conclusion, we need to think about money and time when making a decision on this headline.

What this is trying to make us think is that the NHS are saving lots of lives and battling to do it; what I mean by this is that they are finding it hard to get all the resources they need, and even just to save the potential life. This also makes us think that the NHS are planning something for an event that at one point, they will save millions of lives. I think this because it used the words ‘battle plan’ instead of just ‘are battling’ which makes us think that they are planning something to save lots of lives.
What else we need to know to come to a judgement is what kind of plan they are thinking of, and what opportunity are they thinking of to save millions of lives, because they haven’t included it so it could be absolutely anything at all. I chose this because I think the daily mail are really trying to catch people eye by writing something everyone will be shocked or amazed at but by not explaining everything and the full story. Yes there is a possibility everything in that article is 100% true including all the information. But that’s quite unlikely. When researching this I found out 15,000 beds being cut is equivalent to 24 hospitals being shut. In a BNC lesson today we learnt about the NHS’s worry for the future including costs, patients and targets but what I found most interesting was that 100,000 jobs in the NHS are not filled the same as 10 large hospitals being closed. This could be linked to each other as the loss of staff is causing the loss of patients leading to bed cuts.

Reading this headline makes me think about the background of NHS's decision to do this. Why would they discard hospital beds that could be crucial to someone's future- someone's life? The lack of beds means that the NHS has to cancel out operations at the very last minute. Looking further, the critics say patients' lives are at risk and hospitals are not meant to be 85 percent occupied, however, statistics show, several hospitals are 99 (or even 100) percent occupied with patients at a much higher risk of infection.
According to many reports, hospitals have stated that they spend £2,000,000,000 by overpaying items, such as toilet rolls, wet wipes, and blinds! NHS say that patients recover quicker in their own homes. Is this the real reason? Less beds, less customers, less stress? Is this their way of coping with the pressure? Also, there are too many people needing to have surgery urgently when we are 65 times larger than them! The lack of jobs means there is a lack of money, which results in many patients not having all the required types of equipment they need. Not to mention how many people have low incomes and are not able to pay for their prescriptions. Therefore, if you do not have a cast when you have broken your arm, that is the outcome when we do not give enough amounts of to the NHS! But... who is to blame? The government gets a great deal of money from all over Britain only gives a small fraction of money to the NHS, the only beating heart of Britain there's been since 1948. However, the government gives them a small fraction of money! But, maybe if we made more of a profit from our jobs or gained more well-paid jobs we would not be suffering like this. Therefore is it the government's fault for their stinginess or our fault for our laziness? I choose this headline because I think this is trying to prove that the NHS is one of the countries most prized thing. Pretty much everybody in the UK still thinks that the NHS is useful and should stay. All Through we don't know where they got this information from and it could be biased, but let's assume that is it not biased, then this news paper (the daily mirror) is supporting the NHS and I deduce that the daily mirror is a labor supporting (left wing) paper. This is also trying to make people help try and keep the NHS and even if you have to pay a small fee, they should keep the NHS and the government should be really supportive and enlarge their budget for the NHS.

The NHS try to save as many lives as possible all the time but it isn’t always possible. They always try to plan their days like how many patients they have but they always get more as people are getting more injuries or illnesses and no matter how hard they fight to save people they won’t always win.
They always put up a fight for you no matter what type of day it has been and they will never give up. That’s why they plan to put people on a shift whenever they can to help plan to save more life’s everyday.

Because it’s trying to make us think that most people want to get better faster so they are willing to pay the amount of money that is needed to be payed. We know that some people can’t afford to pay this but others can and so the people who can shouldn’t judge those who can’t.
I picked “73% WOULD PAY MORE TO SAVE THE NHS” -daily mirror because it’s trying to make us think that lots of people will give up spare money to save the NHS. While this might be true we don’t know for sure that 73% of people think that. What happens when they actually have to give up that money? They might have second thoughts 💭. Another thought to add is that newspapers are very biased so we can’t trust everything they say. If you wanted to find the truth you’d have to do some research.

I think that this headline just shows laziness because doctors should be bothered to go to the hospital to do an appointment not through Skype. If the patient can’t make the appointment then the doctor could possibly go to the patient’s house rather than a video call!!!😔 Plus not everyone has access to the internet.
The headline I would write in a newspaper to attract people’s would be:
‘The battle continues’
I would choose this because the money problems have become a battle too save the loves of billions of people.
NHS CUTS 15,000 BEDS
I am sceptical of this headline because not only are newspapers known for fake news but 15,000 beds seems like quite a
lot especially for a company that has saved millions since it was founded so would why that same company do something that could possibly end lives for money
I think that in some catchy headlines it could just be fake news and here is why. The reason why people do all sorts of catchy headlines like 73% more people would pay to save more lives even though the NHS is working so hard it could still not save that much and some people that write newspapers just can’t think of a title so they say what ever comes into their heads but it could be true but if it would not then it could mean that they are just greedy for money. So remember if you see news that could scare you or that you arę curious about try to see if people thank it’s real or find out more on the internet.
' WORLDS DOCTORS AND NURSES ARE TOLD - THE NHS NEEDS YOU!
To start of, the reader of this quote should be the doctors and nurses. 'The Independent' team is trying to persuade doctors and nurses across from the whole world to come and work at the NHS. They are trying to do this because in NHS, there are not enough doctors or nurses and it has only just started back then and without them, we could lose a lot of lives of mankind which will not be good. Since they are doctors and nurses, they should be professionals at doing this job and at around these times, it is very hard to find workers that help people in other peoples illnesses. What 'The Independent team is trying to do, is to gather people and create a successful team that will assist patients with there problems. This is the only way we can get more doctors and nurses ( by gathering all together to create amazing effort and progress.
I also think that this quote is very special because it will tell them how special they are and how the world needs them. If a doctor/nurse reads this quote, I am sure they will be happy to join because when they read it, it will gradually have a lot of effect just like any other reader when they read something, maybe even you reader.

This is making us think that the NHS are thinking of saving more lives and they need more doctors, nurses and cures(mainly for the coronavirus)

WORLD DOCTORS AND NURSES ARE TOLD THE NHS NEED YOU. I think its trying to make you think that the NHS is trying to make out that they are in bad need of nurses and doctors so they are asking many people around the world if they can join the NHS.

My pick is 'NHS battles to save millions of lives' this is telling us that the NHS is planning to help and save lots of lives. This might be because of all the illnesses which do not have a cure or that need life saving treatment.
We need to know how many people it is going to save and what is the battle plan.
I choose,'73% OF PEOPLE WOULD PAY MORE TO SAVE THE NHS' because UK people are very proud of the NHS and would pay a small bit of money so they can get instant care, free treatment. I would like to know how much money we would need to spend to keep the NHS.
I choose this topic because I think that the NHS has given so much to us as a country and I think that we should honour that. As you say, more than half the population have said that they will spend more on the NHS and I agree we should spend more to help the sick, injured and elderly. In my opinion health care is a human right.

I have chosen "NHS BATTLE PLAN TO SAVE MILLIONS OF LIVES" - Daily Express because if the NHS is the National Health Service then they must be planning to save millions of lives and that is what they are being paid for and that is their job. They need to make sure that everyone in the United Kingdom is healthy and safe. People have protested and spoken up for the National Health Service when it was going to be privatised so that shows how much people care about our National Health Service and it represents the importance of the NHS to us. If they do really battle the plan then that is devastating to hear because people are dying and suffering and are relying on the National Health Service to live. People’s lives are on the line and we need people to be with us. An example of this, is the coronavirus and scientists and medical experts are trying very hard to fight the coronavirus and are trying to find a cure. People are dying so does that mean that the National Health Service does not care about the coronavirus and the disastrous outcomes of it? That was my comment for this week’s competition.

I think this article heading is trying to stop you from worrying that the NHS is in a state of no repair or that it would be really hard to fix it. Additionally, it is implying that there is a problem with the NHS, that can easily be fixed by our generosity in giving money to it. But the thing I thought about most was that - at least in the title - it didn't explain where and how they got that information; did they conduct a survey? And if so, where did they do it because I would have liked to enter to express my opinion. Assuming it was done online, not everyone could have known about it since not everybody can access the internet. Even if you can access the internet, however, you may not have heard about it and wouldn't have a say, meaning that it is not a proper democracy. The thing with general elections that makes them a "proper" democracy is that they are in the news and with the manifestos, it is hard to not know about it and all the parties competing. Plus, you would have talked about it with your friends and they could have told you some information about it. It is trying to get us to agree with them and consider the other side of the argument, but what we really should consider is whether those statistics are true or not made up, and where they got the information from because, again, anybody could have told them that as there is nothing stopping them from lying.
I actually don't think 73% of people would pay to help the NHS, however I would like to think that isn't the case. The thing is, we have free healthcare in the UK, and I don't think that many people would just hand that over because the NHS is struggling. British citizens feel like they - and do - deserve free healthcare as we are all leading very busy lives and have to invest in lots of other things (a house, a car, clothes, taxes etc). People wouldn't be ready to say that they don't need free healthcare otherwise we wouldn't have money for the previously mentioned investments. Even if we were forced to, some people wouldn't give in as they find it unfair that something they've had their whole life is taken away from them all of a sudden. To be honest, it is quite unfair to take that away even if it is the right choice like I think and have stated. We all know that this article was purely written because the NHS is failing - there's no question about it - and the writer clearly wants the reader to think, "If 73% of people want this, I'd better believe in it too because I don't want to be the odd one out". But that is the opposite to how we should think; we should stand up for our beliefs, even if that means going against the crowd.
To use scepticism I have mainly questioned where the information that 73% would pay to help the NHS has come from, and whether it is completely trustworthy. It could really have come from anybody anywhere, so if we believe the information we are potentially putting our trust into a stranger. We shouldn’t just think, “Oh, this is a trustworthy source, so it must be true”. We should delve deeper and go onto other websites to see if they are all saying the same thing, and if they are we can finally classify it as true. I hope you like my comment and the scepticism I used. I tried to be really precise to make sure that I predominantly used scepticism and, even though they can be effective, not any of the other ones. Obviously, there were some occasions when I couldn’t use it, so I had to use the other skills to my advantage. If you agree/disagree, you can write a comment saying why so I can see what I have missed that could potentially change my opinion.
