#9 - Time-Travel Challenge - Winners Announced!
08 November 2019What a range of inspiration quotes this week! It's been a pleasure to read them and incredibly hard to pick a winner.
Stars have been awarded for original, thoughtful words and with a reason to back them up.
Our Primary winner this week is cheerful_photograph of The Sherwood School, who gave a bold quote that combined both celebration of achievement, and an instruction for the future.
Our Secondary winner is warm_guava of Faringdon who gave a simple but hugely effective quote that reflected the excitement of the world at the time.
Well done to both of you!
50 years ago, Neil Armstrong became the first person to step onto the surface of the moon. On July 20 1969, over 600 million people around the world huddled around television sets for what was, and still is, one of the biggest moments ever recorded.
Armstrong's famous first words on the surface of the moon were "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind."
This week's challenge is to time-travel 50 years and imagine you are in Neil Armstrong's shoes as you are descending down the steps of Apollo 11.
Knowing that this will go down in history, with hundreds of millions watching now, and billions of people learning about this in future...
What would your first words on the moon have been and why?
This might be a phrase to represent your achievement, or the progress of the human race, or something to inspire people to follow in your footsteps. Or something else entirely! We can't wait to hear your thoughts.
Competition closes at 10.30am on Friday 8th November. Good luck!

My first words on the moon would be 'This is just the start' . This is my quote because it means going to the moon is just a start to a space revolution.
My First words if i were on the moon will be this is the undeafeatable galaxy.I chose this beacause the galaxy has no end.-Balanced_Chemistry
"In 50 years time, people will remember this. In 500 years time, people will remember this. In 5000 years time, this moment will be remembered. First man on the moon, July 20 1969. It has been done! "
I chose these words because they are probably true. In hundred and hundreds of years time, Neil Armstrong, will STILL be the first man in the moon. There will never be another fist man in the moon, and while people may land on other Stars, planets and rocks, it will NEVER be remembered as Neil Armstrong's adventure was and is. Just in the same way you can never rewrite a book and claim it to be the original, you can never recreate the moment when Neil Armstrong took his first step...
My,first quote would be “I did this to prove all the misconceptions can be dealt with even in your life it is the case”it just proves you can change
'Im famous, ive made history' i would say cause its the first step on the moon
"Well, that's one job done on the to-do list."
I would choose this phrase since there are any problems we need to solve. Who knows, we may need to visit as many planets as possible to see which is the most convenient. Since the amount of space junk is increasing, it is altering the planetary climate; this could mean Mars would not be inhabitable any more as the temperature may change to an uncomfortable level. Not to mention the mind-twisting method of how to find a suitable spacecraft to capsule approximately 8 billion people. There are also things to answer or discuss like: Would we be creating a new timeline after we settle in Mars? Will global warming reoccur on a new planet? Questions like that. Overall, this was the explanation of why I would choose my phrase.
My first words would be "I am the first but not the last"
I chose this quote because Neil Armstrong was the first but if we work and work. more peaple can go to space.
My first words on the Moon would have been "This is only the beginning, soon we will travel further out to another planet that's not Earth"
My first words on the moon would be 'This should be remembered not by the people; but by the things we have discovered'.This is because even though those people achieved we gained a lot more knowledge.
Good idea
My first words as I stepped onto the moon would be "The beginning has begun the process of the end". I would say this because once something has started it can't go on forever and the end is just getting nearer and nearer. In a space sense it shows how we should research and try to understand space as much as we can before it's no longer becomes an option, either due to cost or environmental dangers or even circumstances so far in the future that we can't possibly predict them and stop them before they happen.
My first words, if I was Neil Armstrong, would be 'Nothing is impossible if you believe, no rocket is to big,no human is to small'. I would say this because I would be telling the people on earth who are watching me that everything is possible unless if you believe on yourself, because even the world impossible spells I'm possible (put an apostrophe between I and m and put a space after m).Also it tells people that it doesn't matter who you are or anything about you as long as you believe in yourself you can achieve anything.
THANK YOU :)
it's really good =0
" With one movement comes an even bigger one, one mankind is taking with me ". This means that with one movement of me in Neil Armstrong shoes, the whole world is taking a massive movement, landing on the moon.
My first words would be ' this is the beginning of the timeline, and more will come soon.'
I would say this once I stepped on the moon because he was the first-ever person to land on the moon and he was the beginning of the timeline as more people would start to develop to attempt to fly to the moon.
My First Words Would Be If I Was Just Climbing Down The Stairs Of Apollo 11.
"The Heavens I have truly stepped on." Because The heavens are basically Beyond the sky this word shows so much expression and when I think of it I just remember the space.
If I went to space my quote would be: "I didn't come here to win a race, I came to try." I would say this because it doesn't matter if you win or lose, trying is the only thing that matters. If you don't win, it is better than winning because you will learn from your mistake.
If I was Niel Armstrong , I would say that even though i was the first human on the moon, there were hundreds of people behind everything and that we shouldn't take that for granted
‘This is for all to see, and celebrate.’
I have chosen these words because it is true; it is for all to see, not just Americans should be able to go to space. We have the ESA and other county’s have theirs, for example JAXA. And also I think everyone should be able to see this beautiful place because it can bring joy to people and increase imaginations of people all around the Earth.
My first words when I landed on the moon would be " We have come so far to get here ; however, we still have a long way to go". I would choose this because it shows that-although it is an amazing event to have happened and it should be remembered forever- there is still millions of places we could go, things we could discover in Space. Also, I chose this quote because it would inspire young people to become astronauts. This is because they would see what I had done and want to go into space and achieve something like that as well.
In conclusion, my first words on the moon would be " We have come so far to get here ; however, we still have a long way to go" because it would inspire children and shows are achievements and what is left to be achieved.
My first words would be this is just the beginning there is still more to come,. I said this because when Neil Armstrong landed it was the beginning of space travel but now we might be ready to go to infinity and beyond , and find more planets
The words I would use are "this is just the start of the extraordinary things we may accomplish" because, last recorded on the 13 June 2016" space was estimated to be around 93 billion light years in diameter, meaning there would be SO MUCH MORE to explore so it would infact be the start of something extraordinary and inconceivable!
If i was the first person to step on the moon , my first words would be " This a whole other world up here " because it would feel a lot different to how walking and talking is on Earth and because of how we have got somewhere in space.
My first words would have been: this moment will be remembered forever, the moment when mankind made its first imprints on the moon. I chose this because it's true and it is a memorable moment in history and years from when it was said, people will still remember it as the quote from when they got the first man on the moon. Even if people forgot who landed on the moon originally, the quote would have helped them remember. The part about when mankind made its first imprints on the moon says that even though it was one man on the moon the imprints were made by all of mankind.
My first words would be, ''A new vision of life has begun, starting with my own imprints on the moon, leading to many others.'' I would say this because discovering a new planet is very extraordinary, and no one would have even thought it was possible, this is why I have put a new vision of life. It also explains how life can be looked at in many other ways. I have put starting with my imprints on the moon, because I would be the first to step on the moon, and also put leading to many others because it is a start to a bigger accomplishment, with more people and more knowledge about the moon.
Because of how big the moon is so big 1,737.1 km to be eggxact the words i would use are"thou theas steps may be small now thay will be big in the future just like every one"
Pretty nice! Its just the spellings.
My first words could have been "just a leap to there". I think this because it inspires me when I say the phrase and it makes me feel of victory. It also makes me feel like I am The 80th person to do a hard-risking challenge. If I failed, I would still go up there for my life. It would also be like I am the one that did it myself, and when it says mankind, I would be the one!
If I was on the first person on the moon I would say "This first footprint will lead to an huge journey".
I think all of these are amazing but I just can’t decide what I would say
If it was me then I would say "one step for me one step for the world"
"I step into the future"
"I boldly step up to change the world 🌎"
"This is the start of the beginning"
"We will change who we are"
"Forget the past remember the present⌚"
(Said whilst descending the ladder from the lunar lander onto the surface of the moon)..."Houston...this dangling pipe... should it be connected to my oxygen pack?"
'time to show the world my marks'
i had said this because when you go on the moon, your footprints are printed on the surface. the moon is made of dust and rocks, so it's gonna show them. if the moon was made out of hard concrete , it would show nothing!
"To Infinity, and beyond!". I know this may be copyright from toy story but I chose this quote because there are tonnes of planets to explore even outside the solar system e.g Proxima B. Not all planets have been discovered by just going there, some astronomers like Galileo Galilei discovered some planets using a telescope.
" Respecting the moment, honouring the future."
These would be my words if I were the first on the moon. Clearly, I think this phrase illustrates the positivity that it is amazing what we have achieved but space exploration still goes on and we will, from this day forward, do much more.
My quote would be 'this is only the beginning of a sage destined to revolutionise mankind'
My first words would be "After this experience, the world will never be the same."
I would say " This is so cool" because not very many people get to go in space or step on the moon
My first words would be "This is just the start of many people on the moon." I would say this because I would know that if I survived a lot more people would go to the moon.
If i was just about to step on the moon my first quote would be ,"Im in space and having a experience that not many people will be able to have."
If I stepped on the moon I think that I would say “this is amazing” I would say this because I would have been the only person where no person had ever been before.
My first words I would say is " wow I am in space this is my experience on the moon" Because I am in space and it is my experience how to see slightly the planets to look like and how it feels when you are floating.
My first words on the Moon would be "People will remember this for decades to come" I would say this because I imagine schools all over the world would learn about space exploration and somehow learn about me.
I may be jumping down to get to the moon but the whole of humanity is jumping up in success.
My first words on the moon would be: "The future of space exploration is never beyond our imagination, only bigger"
I would say this because we can only explore what we can imagine. If we simply cannot imagine it then we cannot explore it. As a space scientist would say, we can only get out of it what we put into it. Space is beyond our imagination.
Thank you for reading:)
My first words would be "wow"beacause it would be breathtakingand the idea of floating.
My first words would be ''I have achieved one of my aspirations but I still have a lot more to do'' not because I only one goal I would like to reach, but I have many others.
spending money on space is important because if we are going trash this world then we better
start finding another planet
If I were lucky enough to be able to walk on the moon, my first words would be: " though I may be the first, there is no doubt that hundreds of others will follow "
I chose this, because I believe that space travel will improve over time, until people who haven't even been trained are able to experience it.
I would say 'Oh my gosh this is amazing. I want everyone to know that I hope they can come up here and experience what it is like to see unknown galaxies and hidden stars. Thank you for making this dream possible.'
my first words would be: so this is the moon, fascinating.
my first world would be "since we were living in caves humanity has formed what we are doing now we are on the moon we have progressed hugely.
my first word on the moon would be its amazing
my first words i would say are space is more than what people say it is.
I would say this because people say it is more than what space would actually be like.
The trip to space would be out standing.
My first word on the moon would have been, "WOW". This is because I think space is amazing and intriguing and having the experience of witnessing it with my own eyes. if i was theb first person ever to step foot on the moon then i could probably only say that one word because ui would be so breathtaken.
I would say this because we can only explore what we can imagine. If we simply cannot imagine it then we cannot explore it. As a space scientist would say, we can only get out of it what we put into it. Space is beyond our imagination.
Thank you for reading:)
My first words would be " this is just the start, the future is just beyond the corner" Because it is just the start and anything can happen in the future.
What do you think planets look like in space??😕😕
Dots or could they be spheres???😕😕
"The future is just around the corner"
I would say this because I would feel that we have gotten to the moon and that if we could do that, I would assume that we could almost do anything possible, very quickly. We had gotten from the first thing in space to a man on the moon in just 12 years and that surely we could do anything, for example Mars or Mercury and that it wouldn't take that much time for this time as we had developed so quickly already, that it should be within grasp.
My first words on the moon would be: "Wow! I wish the view was like this from Earth!"
I think going to the moon is amazing and I wish everyone had this opportunity, it is once in a lifetime.
My first words would be "This is incredible and I can't believe i am here right now," because I am so privileged to be in the position I am in.
My words would be: "Humans weren't created for nothing we have a purpose from gorillas to this we have achieved being us!"
My first words would be, ''United we stand and united we discover,'' because it shows signs of unity and discovering the unknown. I also think that there being two of the word ' united ' , gives a stronger resemblance to our achievements !
My first words would be ‘Mankind has now gone a step further into the space frontier’ as the Apollo 11 landing was an amazing achievement and the moon could serve as a base to explore mars from.
"I may be the first but not the last".
That is my quote because after it was proven that it is possible to go to the moon, many other people have been such as David Scott, who is alive today, Charles Duke and many more.
I hoped you enjoyed reading!

“I may be a pioneer of man kind and space exploration, but can’t you too?”
This is my quote because everyone can change the world and generations of human kind
A beautiful comment. This really inspired me as when you selected the word "pioneer" I made me think about all of the black women and men who changed the world. (e. g. Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela)
Overall, a very detailed comment.
My first words would be "its begun". My first reason is that a new discovery has been made and its a new adventure has started.Today many discoveries have been made on the moon like new materials, and holiday destitions. This all started because of Neal Armstrong.
Then i started to wonder...
What if people did not discover space?
Who was the first peson to discover space? What was the first planet discovered other that Earth?
My first thoughts would be 'My first steps but a huge for mankind'. I chose these few words, although it is very similar to Neil Armstrong's, because it makes me think about how far our human race has come since 50 years ago. It makes me think about how modernised and advanced or lives are and that 50 years ago was the first time someone had been to the moon, now 12 people have walked on the moon.
I am adding on to my point earlier. I also think that these words make me feel move powerful in making more of an economical effect on my planet.
To edit my first words I want to change it to' one man but all of humanity' as it seems more effective
‘On small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’ would be my first words and next I would say this is just the start of a new era for mankind
One small ,tiny step for Aliens from Area 51 , a big leap for the human race 👽
my first words would be:
Wow. And all this time I thought Antarctica was the most serene, placid and silent place in the galaxy. Shows just how insignificant humans are in comparison to the whole Universe.
I feel that the ocoplishment for the world was fornonimal so it is good but i beleive that nasa (the lanchers)lied about somethings
My words once on the moon for the first time would be 'For everyone out there who dreams of flying to the moon, I want to tell you to keep dreaming because you can do that if you dream hard enough!'
My first words we be "These steps will mean history to the world. These steps are important to mankind as this is not the end, it is only the beginning of an era, a space era. One step means a huge step for Nasa and mankind." I would say these words because it is amazing how Neil Armstrong and his partners advanced onto the moon and 50 years later how much as happened.
My first words on the moon would be "As I take this step, humanity follows." This is because in this day and age, especially with climate change, I feel many could be empowered to spark a change in activists and politicians over the world. It is also a sign that we have the power to change and this step may be the start of it. I think this is a very difficult challenge however as it would be remembered in history forever.
my first words would be 'it looks interesting, but it lacks a bit of atmosphere' because space has no atmosphere!
I would say " This is just the beginning" or " I will be the first here, but definitely not the last" if I was Neil Armstrong.
My reasons for this is because if we were able to get to the moon, then I'm sure that others would definitely be able to go to the moon and make another "first" in the history of space exploration.
But to be honest, I think I would be too dumbfounded to speak.
I would have said, "This moment shall be remembered in human history not just by Americans, but by the entire world. This day will be known as the day a man travelled in a human made object all the way to the moon, and returned alive. But this is only the beginning, the start of a new era!". I would have said this because it would have been true. The word would ave remembered this day, for eons to come, and it was the start of a new era, the era of Space Travel.
I would not have been selfish by promoting my self-dominance, instead I would promote the dominance of the entire human race, saying other thing like "this is a great day for humanity!" and "a world first achieved together".
Overall, I think that I would most likely say something to promote the overall power of nations combined. I am just glad I WASN'T in Armstrong's shoes, because i most likely would ave messed up in front of the whole world!
If I was about to take my first step on the moon I would have said well-done mission accomplished or If I was the first person to do it I would have said "this is it this is the time to inspire future generations and young children then this will be passed on to many, many places to people of the world" because inspiring people is a good thing to do because lots of children have watched different things and have been inspired by what they are watching so that is two things that I would say if I was going to the moon or mars.
well if I was I was on the first day on the moon I would " Although I am old although I am weak I feel great this is my acomplishement of being the first man on the moon I wan t to And also share this experience with other people" Because some people as a child really want t0 go to space but because lets say peer preasure they doubt themselves so this message could mean never give up theres always many chances
'This may be the start but I will never see an end'
I chose this quote because i believe that as soon as he placed the flag he knew there would be no end to his journey and because it meant a lot to his as a person to be the first man on the moon.
-Involved_Grapefruit
My first quote on the moon would probably be, ' I'm astonished that I've made it this far, this is amazing these steps will make history !' I'II most likely be inspired by the stars from outer space.
My first would be is 'there is no time to waist' because there are other planets that we can explore that we haven't discovered yet
"A few good years ago, people would've said what I'm doing was impossible. Yet here I am, proving the impossible, possible."
''Ouch'', because I would probably tripped over.
"We are writing a new chapter in the history of mankind. I once thought the impossible couldn't be done but here I am achieving the impossible."
"This is the beginning of a new generation. A generation which has a lot to offer. I may be the first but I know there is still a lot to come. We are a new world now, let's make sure to keep it this way. This is just the beginning, we still have a lot to do." I would say this because we would be a new place because we have more knowledge of outer space. After Neil Armstrong successfully completed his mission to land on the moon, the world was a new place after the completion of the mission.
I would say, "This is the beginning of a new evolution for space"
"These steps I am taking now could change the world hopefully many more will come here and follow in my footsteps "
I chose this because I want it to be memorable and inspiring which i think are important things and so many more people will want to do it in the future
I agree with you triumphant_tamato that is very inspirational. Well done :)
My first words on the moon will be “the things you do can change the world “I would say that because anything you do will change history and you might be the first or the best to do something.
''Only in the darkness you can see the stars''I have chosen this because it reminds me if you wanted to go stargazing as a child, you will need to wait but at nightime you will sleep,so you will need to wait all those years until you can finally have a chance to go stargazing. It shows Patience and Passion. It also remind me has a lot of truth and meaning to it because humans have to go through the darkness in order to see the beauty in life, like the stars in the night sky.
I am the first but not the last
Because Neil Armstrong was the first but not the last
