More Power, More Problems?

Written standpoint on Elon Musk

Is Elon Musk's power a problem?

Elon Musk's influence and power can be seen as both beneficial and problematic, depending on one's perspective. His power presents some dangerous challenges, especially given influence across multiple industries. Some of the risks include control over global communications (Starlink). Musk controls Starlink, which is a network of thousands of staellites floating in space that provides internet even in places where normal internet doesn’t work— or crucial war zones (Ukraine). Governments have limited control over how Starlink is installed or restricted. Usually, countries make decisions about their own internet, but Starlink is private, so Musk gets to decide instead, which could be risky if he makes choices that affect millions of people.

Another problem is market manipulation. His social media posts have caused massive fluctuations in Tesla stock, crypto currencies, and other markets. He has too much influence as a single person affecting global financial markets so this easily creates instability.

We should also mention AI Automation Risks and Mass job displacement: Tesla’s AI and automation efforts could replace millions of workers, with no clear plan for economic transition. Not to mention weakening public discourse and democracy. Since buying Twitter, which is now X, Musk has allowed misinformation to spread. He has banned or restricted journalists and individuals critical of his policies.

Let's not forget Space Dominance and Militarization, SpaceX dominates space travel, making NASA and other agencies reliant on him. Starship and Starlink could be used for defense or warfare, giving Musk influence over military strategies.

Finally, there are risks with his new projects. Imagine if you could connect your brain to a computer, just like plugging in a USB drive! That’s what Neuralink, a company started by Elon Musk, is trying to do. It wants to create tiny devices that go inside people’s brains to help them think faster, control computers with their minds, or even fix health problems like paralysis. Sounds cool, right? But there are some big risks too, for example brain implant concerns – If doctors rush to put these devices in people’s brains without enough testing, things could go wrong. The brain is very delicate, and if something breaks or doesn’t work right, it could hurt the person instead of helping them. Or, Privacy and Control – if your brain is connected to a computer, who controls the information? Could someone hack your thoughts or use the technology to spy on people? If a powerful company or government controls it, they might use it in ways that aren’t fair. So while Neuralink might help people in amazing ways, we have to be very careful to make sure it’s safe and used for good!

In conclusion, Musk’s impact on the world depends on how he uses his power it will either help people, or it will cause problems. That’s why it’s important to think about how powerful people should be held responsible.

  • Power doesn't always create more problems it just depends who's in power.Let me take two examples from presidents. For one president, in this case I will use Barack Obama, who used his power to help America become a better country to its citizens and countries around America. He had a lot of power in his hands and he used it to make cafeterias serve healthier food options, help America begin to develop a better relationship with Cuba, and also made access to schools way better! On the other hand, we have Donald Trump who put taxes on Canada and Mexico not only affecting the American citizens but also violating the laws of the USMCA or previously NAFTA.He also delayed relationships with Cuba, and he is a offender. These are different types of power it just depends on the power you use.

  • I agree, Elon Musk's power can be a problem. His newest creation gives me the most concern, he wants to create a small device that can go into people's brain to help people think fast. I think that is alarming! such invention has never happened before or at least not in the proportion Elon Musk is proposing. Imagine the risks it can pose to human health, especially on an organ as delicate as the brain. I also think that the neuralink might be weaponized. That is, if it gets hacked, powerful people might use it to control people to do their biddings.

    1. I agree because Elon is putting a computor chip into peoples mind, which gives him the power to literally manipulate people,̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉̉ that would give him way too much power and he could basically control everything

  • I agree with this argument that Elon Musk's power comes with significant risks , and I think the concerns raised here are very valid. His control over global communication , financial markets , AI and even space travel means that decisions affecting millions of people are being made by one single person rather than government or democratic institutions. This is a serious issue because no single person should have that much unchecked power.

One point I'd add is the lack of accountability . Unlike elected leaders who have to answer to the public, Musk runs private companies , which means he doesn't have to follow the same transparency or guidelines. If he decided to shut down starlink in a war zone or promote a particular cryptocurrency no one can stop him. This kind of influence should come with more strictness.

Another major concern is how quickly he moves forward with new technologies like neutralink without enough long term studies. While brain implants could help people with disabilities , rushing into something so invasive without clear safety measures could lead to many health related risks that we all are not prepared for.

In the end I do think Musk's innovations have had positive impacts too. He has revolutionized space travel , created electric cars, and pushed the boundaries of AI . But the problem isn't innovation it is the control . No single person should have this much influence over the future of humanity without stronger regulations in peace.

  • I think that power makes more problem because lots of people wants power too and Elon Musk puts less money to the charity. So plenty of people are arguing at Elon Musk has too much of money for himself.
