#25 The other 10%
12 March 2021
Winners Announced!
Thank you to everyone who shared their good news stories this week - it’s been fantastic to read about so many positive things. Our winners this time are:
poetic_passionfruit of Hammond Junior School, who let us know that the coral around Fiji is recovering after a big storm
and...
gentle_theory of Preston Manor School, who explained how people from Africa are being empowered to share their cultures and prevent stereotyping on Wikipedia.
These brilliant examples really stood out from the rest - well done both of you!
This half-term our Issue has a special focus on numeracy in the news - so all of our competitions are going to have something to do with numbers.
Did you know that 90% of all news reported is bad news? This means that only 10% isn't.
This is not because more bad things happen than good things, it's because people are more likely to look at bad news than good news - so more bad news is reported.
We would like your competition entries this week to help balance things out a bit. Your challenge is to tell us about a POSITIVE news story... in 20 words or less.
Try to make sure you mention the key points in your summary and don't forget: it needs to be GOOD NEWS!
Need some help to get going? Pick one of these sentence starters:
The good news story I heard about was...
I heard a news story about...
The story I have chosen is...
The deadline for entries is Friday March 12th at midday. PLEASE ENTER ONLY ONCE and make sure your work is your own. Good luck!

eager_reflection here,
The good news that I found out was that apes at San Diego Zoo were given an experimental COVID-19 vaccine.
I have read in BBC news that in a supermarket, a policeman caught a shoplifter, but instead of arresting them, he actually gave her some food for her family. I think that this is very good news, as it shows that some people care, and people who can't afford these things are being assisted. The policeman was asked to arrest them, but he didn't as he said that the children reminded him of his own. I think that we need some people like him, who serve their duty and help those who deserve it. I know that this was a question from last issue but he is an example of a good policeman.
Another good news story is actually about a small Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who survived an alligator. The young dog is being teated as a mascot, and he's actually been named 'deputy sheriff' in Florida. The sheriff is displaying the dog to children, for educating them about safety. I think that this is a good news story, as it shows how no matter how little we are, we can stand up. The mere fact that the dog survived a predator is amazing, and if he didn't the story would be really negative, and loads of people would be sad.
Finally, one last good news story is that the Pfizer jab prevents 94% of symptomatic infections, and that means less people would have a risk of losing health from the virus with it. I thought that I might to something a little more related to the topic for this one. This is mostly good news, apart from people who would like to fuss over the other 6%. This is because if the vaccine works, people's lives could be saved. The Pfizer jab was a while ago now, but that doesn't mean it still isn't important. If people can give these vaccines to people in danger, then we'll be able to fight it.
Lastly, to answer Katie's question from the previous competition, the Coronavirus started before the pandemic, in a way, as in the beginning, it wasn't an entire 'pandemic' yet. I think that the pandemic started in March 2020, and the coronavirus started in December 2019. So I think I must have messed up my numbers- the pandemic has been going on for about a year now.
Thank you very much for reading!

Excellent research, reflective_arctic_fox, but remember the requirement was 20 words - can you take one of the ones you have mentioned and boil it down?
I read that the Pfizer jab has been given to more people, and now less people are vulnerable.

The good new story I heard about was that there was only 82 deaths over the weekend for covid-19 patients.
I heard that a boy used his mum's thumb to unlock the door because she passed out
The good news is that the lockdown will be fully open by 21 June. In my opinion, this is positive and negative because the negative side is that it has been seen that in London people still don't care about COVID-19 and people are dying. The positive side that children could get their education properly because most children haven't been learning and focusing well in remote online work.
The good news is that the lockdown will be fully open by 21 June

Could you explain what you mean here, quirky_apple? There are some vaccines that have been checked many times by safety regulators and now going out to the public.
I have heard that the stay-at-home restrictions will be released on the 29th of March.
