What might make AI more sustainable?
Watch this interview with Tejas Chopra, a senior software engineer at Netflix. He explains how big companies are using AI and about why it is not yet sustainable.
Video not working? follow this link: https://vimeo.com/1046830719/b268e6c0eb?
Look at the following problems that Tejas explained:
-
Problem one: AI uses a lot of energy
“The data centres that run these AI systems need a lot of electricity for both running the computers and keeping them cool.”
-
Problem two: people use AI without thinking about the impact on the planet
“We can all make small choices that add up. For example, not leaving applications running in the background when we are not using them.”
Join the discussion
Choose one of the problems that Tejas explained above. What could be done to help solve the problem?
For example, if you choose problem one: what could be done to reduce the carbon emissions that AI produces? Can you think of creative ways to keep the systems cool?
Or if you choose problem two: should any rules be put in place for how individuals use AI? Or what could people do to reduce their personal AI impact on the planet?

To solve the problem of AI using too much energy, the power supply in the data centers should be replaced by renewable energy sources , such as wind and solar energy, which would help to reduce carbon emissions. The companies should also design AI systems which use less power , which would help in improving the efficiency .
Another thing that can be done is that , for cooling purpose the data centers should use natural cooling methods like being situated in cooler areas or by using liquid cooling systems instead of using air conditioning , which consumes a lot of energy. AI should be used to perform tasks for shorter time , which would reduce the energy needed for them to run .
By following this AI would be more energy efficient, reduce carbon emissions , and would be less harmful to the planet.
Hi tranquil _apple
Those all sound like good solutions, how do you think we can encourage governments and companies to invest in renewable energy and research into developing more energy efficient AI?
Hi Laura @ KPMG
To get companies and government to use renewable energy and make AI more sustainable , we could take some steps. Like government can give rewards like tax cuts to those companies who use clean energy like wind or solar energy. We could also help people to understand about how AI affects our environment and ask them to use more greener options. Government and scientists could work together and find out about the ways to save energy while using AI . In the end the companies using eco friendly options should be rewarded to inspire others to do the same. By following these steps AI can be more eco friendly for the environment.
AI is of great help to the world, and cutting it out will not just be bad, but causing a lot of damage, so on the aspect of unsustainablity, the AI departments and companies could do some stuff to reduce the dirt released in both the air, land and sea. On the air, companies that invent bots could create more of bots that filter chemically infected air, released from factories at the course of production and trap the carbon released too!.
On sea, they are a lot of dirt, so these water proof bots (probably solar powered, for sustainablility) could be invested into or multiplied so that they could go to the depths of the sea, pick dirt, filter the water and so much more that could increase sustainability.
On land, these companies could invent more bots for community clean up, waste management and could even tell citizens more about waste and its effects, either in the magazines, leaflets, audio or video (screen) notes!
I agree because if AI manufacturing companies should take this measures the country and the world at large could be saved from the following:
1.ozone layer depletion
2.polluted air which causes death or infection to the people
3.bad growth of crops
if this companies should put saver and more sustainable measures into place while producing and fixing AIs,
the world would be a safe and peaceful place for us.
AI used in almost every field of work all over the world, whether it be medicines or farming or teaching. And this is making it difficult to be handled, in the early ages, people used to work on the basis of their research and result it was like a try and error method. Farmers recently have started using machines to know about conditions of a plant or how much water it needs, earlier farmers used to check the plant in their traditional way and had all knowledge about its requirements, teachers are using projectors and laptops and computers for teaching and even students {having internet resources} are not really getting to learn and know the actual knowledge, back in early days, people used to write answers finding from books to form a perfect one. AI is also helping the scientists and doctors in their fields, they are able to find medicines quicker as they have resources, not like before when it used to take a lot of time, effort and trials to find about a single medicine. AI although being used for good work is used excessively, many people are focusing on jobs related to AI because that is what people are preferring nowadays, due to this many AI applications are increasing every day, this leads to people use more AI. This is what can be termed as using AI without thinking of the impact it would have on the planet. According to research, main thing we can do to reduce this problem is using the 'Green AI' namely to form eco friendly models and applications. AI can also be used in making energy efficient programs etc.
Let's Make Our Planet AI FRIENDLY
THANK YOU
I agree with you sensible_queen and I will like you to elaborate in the "Green AI", Is this a bot or an application for managing the sanitation system, and how can this Green AI reduce the carbon emission level most importantly or work more on the worlds sanitation level.
I feel glad that you liked my comment bold_ibex
AI truly is a topic to be worried about, not only do we need to focus on use of AI but also how it can be made sustainable and help it adapt to the nature. And that is exactly what 'Green AI' is... it is not specifically a boat or application, but a concept of using AI in environmentally friendly way! Isn't it surprising!
Green AI can reduce carbon emission and work on sanitation level, as it practices the following:
1. Energy Efficiency-: creating better algorithms and models for low consumption of energy
2. Transportation-: We are already using electrical vehicles which run on low energy
3. Renewable-: AI can help in accuracy of energy like solar/wind
4. Agriculture-: can help in use of needs of plants like fertilizers, water etc.-
5. Waste Managment-: small sorting and other ways can help in decrease of landfills
6. Climate-: AI can predict natural disasters
and through all this, it has been proven by research that GREEN AI can reduce up to 4% of carbon emissions globally.
THANK YOU
I agree because artificial intelligence, AI, is the ability for a machine to think and solve problems but I strongly believe that humans are much intelligent than the AI. AI is now helping in many fields, including: teaching, engineering and much more.
Though AI help people in mostly everything in their life, it's unsustainable; Using a lot of computing power or in other words electricity that would harm the planet.
It's OK to us AI, but not that much of time. Why would you open any AI source leaving it running in the background?
In my own opinion, while using AI there should be a limited time a day for all AI sources. After time ends the programme might send you a notification to notify you that your time is up and close after 5 minutes of this message, though you close it your own or if you're opening it in the background running without using it, it would also close.
You might ask yourself a question: "What if I need AI much time?".
Well it's a great question, you may need AI for a longer time than provided but before answering, would you need AI for an emergency or something not that much important, like asking AI which color would look better on camera?
If it's for an emergency, I appreciate that you need it in an urgent situation and not for fun but please care about the planet.
So we would make AI sustainable by providing solar panels, wind turbines, solar cell known as photovoltaic cell (PV cell), and solar pent; all these things take energy from sun or wind and turn energy into electricity, that help make AI sustainable.
Help Make AI Sustainable
Regarding the second problem:
In my school, the students have accounts for a website with AI-tools which can be used whenever we feel the need to do so. Maybe, especially when it comes to AI that is given by schools, there can be a limited amount allowed to be used in order to tone down the usage.
Other than that, statistics could be given that show how often one uses AI and how much energy this translates to. This could prevent unneeded/unimportant usage of AI by making people understand what the consequences of their actions are.
I agree with you! Limiting AI use and sharing stats on its impact can make a big difference. It's like choosing to carpool or use public transport instead of driving solo - every small action counts!
As youths, we're constantly using AI-powered tools and apps, from social media to music streaming. But have you ever wondered how much energy is consumed by these services? By being more mindful of our AI use, we can make a positive impact on the environment.
Do you think tech companies should provide users with estimates of their carbon footprint based on their AI usage?
Very thoughtful ideas
Yes, because I believe that most youths constantly do this out of Ignorance of their carbon footprint, but if these app companies or AI and software engineers could provide us with daily or weekly detail of our carbon foot print and these effects, it will awaken most minds and there is more control on the use of AI and release of carbon emission.
You are right, many people don't consider the environmental impact of AI.
So, I came up the solution for your problem two.
Creating a "carbon calculator"
The work of this carbon calculator is to track the usage of AI, used by an individual and based on the data, the calculator would estimate the carbon emissions associated with user's AI usage. Also, it will set a reasonable carbon emission limit . If they exceeds the limit, a small fee should be payed by the individual, which will be used to fund carbon offsetting projects.
THANK YOU
I find that ok and it is amazing AI can really help other people it’s ok it like we don’t get it that’s why we have AI.
Can you give an example of how AI can help a group of people?
Hello Steff. AI can help people like if a scientist needs to make a type of medicine in a short amount of time, they can use AI and it can give the scientist the formula for the medicine. Or if farmer need to know what the water level in their crops is, they can use AI for that too.
AI can be used to help people right from the scientist down to the farmer. I would like to give an instance let me say, a scientist wants to check the state of the atmosphere, it will be the part of AI's job to help the scientists figure out how to help him out.
This sense can also use the instance of a parent who wants to help his/her child to do his/her assignment. This is also an instance that makes AI useful to most persons in the world today.
So, in conclusion I would like to say that AI can help people globally.
Thanks
They can help people by telling them what to do and they may change their minds and actually listen to AI they will do it and I also think that people should listen to AI more and it can really help and if their mad it can change their mood.
AI is a powerful tool in the digital industry however it has become increasingly popular and is a major contributor to global warming due to its high levels of greenhouse gases. In addition, large amounts of energy is being wasted per second and costing people who use it and those who are in charge of the production AI a fortune. So how do we make it sustainable?
Big manufacturers can come up with ways to reduce the wastage such as using a smaller amount of water to maintain the heat and having a certain amount of AI used at once. Also, solar powered devices, and other technologies that are used to create a stable environment are a great source for AI to continue developing as an economy.
To reduce the environmental impact of AI, we can take several steps. For instance, we can power data centers with renewable energy sources, develop more energy-efficient algorithms and hardware, and utilize edge computing to reduce data transfer and processing needs. Additionally, we can implement cooling systems that use outside air or water instead of energy-intensive air conditioning. On a personal level, individuals can make a difference by using AI-powered tools that optimize energy consumption, limiting usage of resource-intensive AI applications, and supporting companies that prioritize sustainability in their AI development.
Thankyou.
I agree because I know that one time when I read the news it said that a city in which a google center was present did not have water for a month because it used to much energy and second of all people use AI without thinking about the impact it causes on the planet, they even made a movie about this called Geostorm and i think that we should use it correctly or it will be a problem in the future. THANK YOU!!
How else do you think we can encourage people to think about the impact AI may have on the planet before using it?
Hello Isabelle.
In my perspective, to encourage people think about the impact of artificial intelligence, AI, on the planet before using it, is when living the real situation.
But how could we do that?
Well, I hardly believe that many people and not all don’t trust anything you may say about the planet without living the scene itself.
So my idea is to do a small game like an “Escape Room” to allow people of all ages see the impact of AI on the planet.
However, some students may not match my point of view but overall an opinion of a person may be totally different from another, as we have different personalities, we have special opinions and ideas.
Thank you
Answering question two everyone knows AI has its own impact both the negative and positive impact to the planet. AI is known for its electronic waste in our planet earth but in every problem the is a solution so i suggest that the reduce its power usage and we all know that is not some thing that we can not just say that AI should be stopped because of it has a good impact to humans which some of them are, decision making, simplifying complicated questions for humans to understand so i think that reducing the power usage will be a good way or one of the ways of reducing the negative impact of AI in our planet. Thank you
I do agree that we cannot just bring AI to a stop because it has made its way into almost all the fields of study, if not all . but how do you suggest that the power usage should be reduced because AI needs a specific amount of energy to function, if the power is reduced how would it function ,because the energy becomes insufficient to carry out any form of task. Remember that a vast amount of data is put into an AI so that is can help in various field that is why it uses so much power by implication to reduce the power usage the amount of data imputed has to reduce thereby reducing its diversity and productivity
Ai is a great option to help the world and people in their private life's. Even if Ai has such immense consequences it is a great option for the world. I don't think it is possible in the near future to reduce the CO2 emissions of AI. So i would introduce some kind of tax for using AI and the moneys earned could be used to restore the rainforest or the ocean. So there would be an equalization of the CO2 emissions produced. The tax could be used for the next years till AI gets more sustainable. The tax would also just be big companies that use AI the most.
According to problem 2, it is said that AI emits carbon dioxide which causes ozone layer depletion. Ozone layer depletion as we all know can make radioactive rays from the sun to penetrate the ozone layer and when those rays come in contact with human skin can cause cancer. Therefore, I believe that AI is not sustainable and has caused harm to the world
That's an interesting point, I hadn't considered that before. Tejas mentioned that AI leads to greater CO2 emissions, which in turn leads to climate change, but he didn't talk about the ozone layer. I agree that ozone layer depletion can mean more harmful ultraviolet rays getting through, which potentially leads to more skin cancers. However, I'm not entirely sure about a link between CO2 emissions and ozone layer depletion - could you please tell me where you found your evidence for this?
I way I would suggest to keep the databases of Artificial Intelligence will be by setting up a wall made of several units of earthen cylinders with a hole in the middle and space for water around its sides. These earthen cylinders are to be arranged in a manner which allows a natural source to air to be in contact with our arrangement. These earthen cylinders are to filled in water. Now you might say, this would waste water but filling them with just a small amount of water can last for days. Assuming that each cylinder requires 1 l of water for four to five days and there are 50 cylinders in one arrangement, it would require 10L of water each day. Pretty efficient, right?
(inspired from water cooling earthen pots)
Regarding the second problem a solution could be that we inform people over these things that can help the planet for the better.Although these things seem small and like they don't make an impact think what if everyone did that I will use his example if everyone left a background app running that means billions of people are producing these small amounts of carbon dioxide which add up and end up making a huge impact on our planet making the amount of greenhouse gasses skyrocket. If we were to just inform people over these things that could change our planet it could end up helping us for the better.
I would love to go for the first statement, ai requires GPU processing power, which uses energy. It is said that electricity consumption is actually dedicated to AI.
While AI ‘s energy consumption is delicate with uncertainty, estimating its carbon footprint is a challenge for the scientific community.this consumption of energy may limit global warming means drastically reducing global greenhouse gas emissions. Improvement of new equipment requires usually emits greenhouse gases. Optimizing infrastructures such as water cooling data centers. Shifts the problem to water resources. And the relocation of data centers to countries with low carbon electricity mix means that were able to manage the additional electricity demand.
1: AI is using a lot of energy. It is bad for our environment to get energy. To get more energy, environmental friendly, we could use solar panels and use this energy to run AI.
First solution: We could build up a AI server in a cold region, like the north pole, and make a water cooled AI. We would not need that much water, because the water will be cooled everytime, because the region is cold. The problem with this idea is that the required energy is still not there. With solar panels the energy that is required can't be collected by 100%, because at the north pole half of the year is day and the other one is night.
Second solution: In a country that isn't that hot, but still has as much sun as possible, e.g. Denmark or Germany or Great Britan, we could build up a house with many flats. Next to the house there should be an AI system then. This system will be cooled by water and the water is instantly given into the house into several flats to heat them. On the roof of this house there will be as much solar panels as possible to get as much energy from the solar panels as possible that AI doesn't have to use so much energy from another source. By using the water that is heated by AI to heat up those flats there won't be energy used to heat up the flats, because AI is heating up the water that is heating up those flats. If one house isn't enough we could build a whole city by doing the model I suggested. With more houses there would be more place for more solar panels->more environmental friendly energy. But the simplest way would be to stop using AI!
Ai is a very helpful source and if we put rules for individuals to use them it will cause a lot of problems so we should not put any rules I think people could start using AI more mindfully instead of asking AI every smallest problem they could not solve people should try figureing out things themselves this will reduce the impact of AI on our planet and it will be more helpful for the individual to understand their life
Hi polite_chemistry
How do you think we can encourage people to use AI more mindfully and think about the environmental impacts?
Regarding the second problem, there should be clear rules in place for how AI is used. Unfortunately, a significant portion of the population heavily depends on AI. As a result, even if rules are implemented, there’s a risk that people might not follow them consistently.
Instead, AI developers themselves should embed programs that limit the amount of time people can use AI each day. For highly passionate professionals or those whose work relies heavily on science, these limits could vary based on their genuine needs.
At the same time, ordinary users should be made aware of the importance of using AI responsibly and only when absolutely necessary.
Hi glad_apple,
You said that a significant portion of the population heavily depends on AI. I'm not entirely sure about this, can you say more?
A significant portion of the population relies on AI in daily life, often unknowingly. Tools like Google, Netflix, social media, and navigation apps use AI to personalize experiences and provide ease. Essential services like healthcare, e-commerce, and finance also depend on AI for efficiency and innovation.
The solution to the 2nd problem is simple yet deep. Most people tend to use AI for almost everything. Without even thinking about its harmful effects. There is no doubt that AI is very useful in our daily lives as it can change lives of millions . But most people overuse it . This is where the problem arises . As respected sir explained in the video, small efforts can make a great change in us overcoming this problem. Like switching of lights and fans when not in use, turning of the switch after your mobile is charged, turn of the WIFI when going out for a long time etc. These steps may seem tiny but have a huge impact in our total energy consumption. At last I would like to say "impact does not come overnight" but these small steps will SURELY result in a better tomorrow . Starting today !
Hi happy_morning
do you think people will can be persuaded to make these changes to reduce the impact on the environment or does there need to be some regulation to restrict who can use it or how much people can use it?
Yes ma'am, I think that should strict laws should be made to check the regular use of AI . If a person goes above a certain limit or misuses AI, they should be fined. If a person wishes to go above their limit they need to extend their limit by paying a sum. This will result in making people more AI efficient and sustainable.
although AI is very helpful i have an idea on how to reduce its effect to the atmosphere and that is simply by limiting the amount of searches a person can make per day so that way we can still be using AI and the enviroment would better because the amount of energy used per AI machine would be reduced too.
Should everyone be given the same amount of searches?
Yes
I agree with you, but what do you think are the ways for everyone most especially does in the rural area to be able to use AI comfortable and efficiently?
I disagree because some days might be different from others when it comes to the large number of assigments given might be up to to five or more then without a minium of four assinments done you might get puinshed it will be good if the amount of research are increase it will probably be good for students all over the world it might be good for those with good and avisable research.
THANK YOU.
AI and its effect on the world are not one-sided. it contributes to a lot of development done in the world but its processing requires a lot of energy which is usually derived from fossil fuel like sources which contribute to global warming. In this topic, I would like to focus and mention some points on problem two. Use of AI is done all around the world, whether it be for individual purposes or a way of empowerment of large resource - producing plants but it's consequences are the same and so some rules, according to me shall be put in place to limit the use of AI for both of these situations. Firstly as per the use of AI for individuals, AI shall not respond to similar questions or give the same response for the questions asked repeatedly, so that it helps AI processing a bit faster and easier. For large companies, AI itself should give a report on a time basis to its creation platform of how frequently it is used so that the platform and their members can take the major steps required to limit the use of AI. Along with this, awareness should not remain in a boundary and everyone shall know about the consequences of using AI and so everyone should take a pledge to reduce their use of AI and use it only when needed.
Hi best_physics
Some very interesting ideas, what do you think are some of the rules we should put in place to limit the use of AI - should priority be given to certain types of activities or users?
What do you think are the best ways to raise awareness of the environmental consequences of using AI?
Hi Laura.
Yes, according to me priority shall be must everyone should get a chance to use AI but no one shall be able to abuse it and so to do this by raising awareness, a rule that can be followed could b that the AI application should give a message or pop up after a certain amount of questions asked by the user through the interface of the app. They could be anything like " Do you know, it takes nearly 5 times more energy to generate a search result on an AI platform than to power a digital clock for one hour?" or " Help reduce our carbon footprint, use AI only when needed" .Such small steps might make a difference. Also AI is very intelligent and capable so AI should be able to depict what majority of the search results are important or should be able to depict that whether a search is being asked by an individual or a large company. What I mean to say is that AI should be able prioritize a set of questions and then answer the ones more complex first. Also, publishing information on the web or using advertisements could be a way to gain the people's attention regarding AI and its consequences could be a way to spread awareness. In my opinion, these points might be helpful.
I choose problem 1 -"AI uses a lot of energy" because this problem's solution is also a part of solution of problem 2. If energy would be saved, indirectly the harmful impact on the planet would also be reduced.
I think we can reduce the energy consumption of AI by using the renewable energy which is solar and wind energy. We can also contribute to save energy by just doing a small act of kindness which is turning off the AI machine or platform when not in use so that it doesn't keep on consuming energy unnecessarily.
As mentioned in the video, AI runs in the background while using applications like Netflix to recommend things we prefer at that particular time. AI running in the background is like a silent listener who listens to everything we speak and the application recommends results related to our mood or what we need. My sister had an experience like this recently. My sister wanted to buy books and she was asking my mother for it. after a while when she opens her Instagram she could find posts related to books. This is something that is not safe. There is a possibility that some fraudulent applications can make AI run in our phone’s background and can steal our personal information and even bank details. This issue is something that everyone should be aware of because with the development of AI the rate of online crimes is also increasing day by day.
Carbon emmission contributes a lot in the deterioration of the climate. It is a major problem for us to solve. There are many small ways in which we can try to solve this problem like –turning off the electronic devices when not in use, turning off the engine when the vehicle is standing on the signal. Water wastage is connected to AI as the massive systems need to be cooled down. I think that large pipelines need to be installed to store the water and cool down the systems. Let us all contribute to conserve future and bring progress.
AI , a technology that has helped us to communicate to others, solve our problems etc has its own disadvantages too. As the above problems about AI using energy and harming our environment, before also some or other things would harm the environment. Such as delivering someone an email would harm the environment like when the letter is sent to the sender in three to four days as vehicles are used in this process. Paper is wasted in replying and sending letters to each other. So instead of getting concerned about usage of AI, try adding it in your life.
To reduce the environmental impact of AI, we can start by using AI more thoughtfully. This means being mindful of how often we rely on AI services and choosing those that prioritize sustainability, like companies powered by renewable energy. We can also group tasks together to reduce the energy consumption. Supporting businesses that focus on eco friendly practices is another way to help. By making small changes we can all play a part in making AI more sustainable.
I like the idea of using AI more thoughtfully to help reduce its environmental impact. Do you have any suggestions on how you would achieve this? Are there only certain people who should have access? or should it only be used for certain types of tasks?
Although AI can raise a lot of problems, such as using too much energy or moving people to tend to use AI without thinking about it, it can be recognized that AI is - in the current global situation - not to be cut off.
Therefore, to decrease the energy used by AI, one could raise the costs of the use of AI or limitating the numbers or institutions to use AI, in order to shrink the number of AI users and to solve the problem.
Although those approches seem to be reasonable, in my opinion, the right approach is to educate the growing up people and generally all the people about the risks of using AI. So, people might think about whether it is necessary to use AI before they use it and solving the second problem by conveying basic knowledge about the effects of AI, too.
In general, I believe that conveying the risks of AI should be conveyed ang taught to the people in order to balance the sustainability and the efficiency of AI.
AI is a life- altering change to the world and seeing it gone won't be a solution to saving the planet but going back a step in evolution so make solutions to make it more sustainable therefore track the progress of AI and have limitations in which you can use it and if you succeed the maximum of using AI you get a fine or even a criminal record. When places that release chemicals and greenhouse gasses you can benefit from having AI by using it to trap the the gas and bad air released onto the planet. People complain about not having access to clean water so you can use AI to filter and clean the water and use planet friendly fertiliser to help farmers crops because AI can be sustainable if you want it to be sustainable because these are steps that will help human kind and the world.
Interesting ideas - can you tell me more about your idea on a fine for using AI?
regarding problem 2
Individuals should limit their search time on AI for example.
Doctors should be allowed to use AI for 2-8 hours or how long an appointment lasts.
Scientists should be allowed to use AI for 3-6 hours for important purposes.
They could instill this rule by putting time limits on every search, for people who aren't logged in as any on the AI website or application the time limit should be 30 minutes.
When they log in they should choose from a variety of jobs and uses for the AI, and to avoid faking their occupation, they should only allowed to search about specific topics according for the use they applied for.
Yes, some rules should be put in place.
The rules that should be put in place:
1) People need to know how AI works, that it can make decisions especially in health care and can have
dangerous consequences if not used considerably.
2) People should make sure that they are using AI tools properly and respectfully so they do not affect personal privacy and data and they do not affect AI abilities.
3) AI should be used as a tool that helps people make decisions and should not be used for evil deeds like stealing things and cheating people.
AI is great for lots of stuff like google, classroom work and other things but it takes lots of electricity and are planet has climate change also it is not safe for us.I think we should banned AI but if you need to google some thing or classroom work other then that AI should be banned for life.
How do you think AI can help with classroom work?
I disagree with you playful city because, how do you think life would be with ai banned. how would humans survive without ai. with ai banned, scientists will not be able to predict disasters and climate changes which would be a big threat to the planet and human lives. doctors would no longer be able to diagnose patients for illnesses, students would not be able to research on the assignments. how would online shop owners be able to deliver their goods quickly. life would be a mess and useless without ai. so I don't think banning ai is a good option. THANKS.
It makes sense
In my opinion problem one could be solved if AI centers became smaller bur with the same capacity as before, but they wouldn't use as much energy as the AI centers need now. For example how chips evolved over the years from vacuum tubes to transistors to microprocessors and so on, gradually becoming smaller and smaller. This could also happen to the AI centers to become smaller and to not use as much energy as they would have used to, but to still have the same capacity.
They could also put a limit for individuals and companies so we prevent excessive consumption and if someone breaks the limit, they will get a fine. And the money from the fine will go to charity that helps the planet to remain eco-friendly.
Many people use AI without considering the potential impact that it may have on our environment, planet, and society. From problem-solving and decision-making to facial recognition technology, AI has been implanted in several aspects of society and the lives of individuals. However, with this convenience comes the management to ensure that AI is being used respectfully and accountably.
To address this issue, there is a need for increased awareness and education regarding the usage of AI and the impact. By promoting discussions and conversations about the benefits and risk of using AI, we can enable individuals to make informed and educated decisions about how to utilize AI. Furthermore, forming regulations and standards for the creation and usage of AI technologies can ensure that they are employed in a manner that supports fairness and privacy. In conclusion, by promoting behavioral AI practices, we can utilize the technology's potential for the greater good of society.
In addition, we can also use data, statistics, and facts to prove to people that the overuse and misuse of AI can damage our environment and planet. Furthermore, according to research, people can start supporting companies that support sustainability in their AI programs, companies can green their data centers, companies can use renewable energy, and companies can reuse components when capable. In conclusion, companies and society can work together to make a difference, saving not just society but also our environment and planet.
I think the solution to problem ONE is to minimize the way people use AI and AI should be used for important things that will help the masses and not frivolous things that will not be beneficial to humans at large. I will say the government should place some checkers in place to regulate the frequency of how AI is used and the purposes for its usage.
A.I is used every were in the world making it hard to be controlled causing sustainability level low. in the early days when there was noting like A.I people learnt from their mistakes our own type of A.I was try and error method but when a.i was newly invented work became easier but little did we know A.I brought use bigger problems like air pollution but they can also be limited to the amounts one gets to use artificial intelligence in a day to tone down a.i usage. On another level students can use a.i optical tools to reduce the use of A.I. cause harmful out let of bad gas which is also harmful to the health.
LETS MAKEOUR COUNTRY A.I SUSTAINABLE.
Many individuals are utilizing artificial intelligence without thinking about the impact it can have on the planet. Many careers in today's generation depend on AI in order to further their discoveries in a faster manner as well as being able to rely on a source that is easily accessible. Due to many people today having access to artificial intelligence, some do not realize how their excessive usage could be detrimental to what we call today's world. According to research, artificial intelligence is produced from many kinds of metal and electricity, and when an excessive amount of this metal is being produced, it can further lead to soil erosion as well as pollution. Now, imagine a surplus of
people of this generation are constantly using AI on a daily basis without their knowledge of it. The pollution rates will continue to rise, and soil erosion will become even more common that it is today. A way we can reduce this impact is by limiting the number of people who are allowed to have access to AI. For example, students who are enrolled in universities or magnet schools should not be allowed to have access to artificial intelligence. This rule can help the students expand on their productivity without the usage of AI. Additionally, we can stop using as much data by, as the video states, closing out unneeded tabs. These tabs take up data as well as the internet, which are both interconnected to artificial intelligence as well as assisting to generate it. Together, we can resolve the growing problem of artificial intelligence today.
I believe for the first problem, although water is recyclable, the components in these systems can cause forever chemicals in water, we must learn ways to make components in these computers for AI(In general too)to be more recyclable or have robots that can help clean and research ways to reduce Ewaste. We can't fully get rid of AI as it has been beneficial for people working in many different fields, so it is better to use AI to help us find solutions to reduce Ewaste and to promote to people to know about the effects our carbon footprint has, ways to reduce and encourage people to help invent new more efficient, reliable and recyclable . I believe for problem 2 I believe we can put in laws to make AI be used for more helpful reasons rather asking for jokes until these computers AI runs on, become more reliable and recyclable. Another way I believe can work is sharing how using AI can negatively affect our environment so more people become more cautious when using AI for answers.
Interesting points efficient_date. That got me thinking about how we might be able to use AI to help solve some of the problems that it creates. Can you give an example of how we might use AI to be part of the solution?
Artificial Intelligence also known as AI has really been of great help to humanity but we still are not sustaining our environment well, we are ignorant to the harmful effects affecting our planet.
For problem one, what could be done to reduce the carbon emissions that AI produce?
The carbon emissions produced by AI comes from the amount of electricity used to operate and generate AI text which heavily relies on fossil fuels bringing about carbon dioxide emissions that is slowly affecting our planet. We can start by reducing our carbon footprint which are bush burning, factories emission, cars emission or save energy when not in use.
In my opinion, keeping the systems cool, there should also be precautions in place for using or releasing such emissions and there should be a regulation in the way the AI is used in generating texts so as to avoid the vast amount of electricity wasted saving our planet.
I think to manage workloads so that AI tasks are done when other demand for energy are low is a good way of reducing the amount of energy used by AI.
sometimes student give all their tasks and assignment to AI but if they reduce the workload they give to the AI ,it can help reduce energy consumption of the AI.
in as much as AI is very vital the rate of damage it will cause is very high, problem such as climate change needs to stop so the use of AI should be reduced or limited to some people so that our environment can be conducive for we the humans.
I think people can reduce the impact of AI on the world by using it only when they need it because most of the information can be found on Google or on some other site. I also think that we need to really take care of the environment, and if we use AI for every little thing we won't achieve that.
I'd very much like to answer the second statement!
I would rather not say that "people are using AI without thinking about the impact on planet" but instead, "they are using Ai excessively despite knowing the consequences". AI is a very energy intensive process which is based on big data. Ai enabled devices require more energy & fuel because it uses data mining. in this way, it has more carbon footprinting, produces more ewaste, and data centres that run these Ai systems produce 'heat' which just adds on to global warming.
Maybe monetizatizing Ai in a way that it can promote environmental friendly activities can be a great help, the revenue generated from the monitization can be used as a shield to fight against the climate change!
People using AI without thinking is just like a fool with power. If company will give such an expensive power very easily to the common people, they will use it. The companies, govt. or the people should take green initiatives such as if we are going to consume this much electricity so we must also do some green environment initiatives like establishment of green belt, plantation, introducing the concept of vertical gardening. So by additionally putting efforts in this green revolution, we can counter the carbon emissions by the initiatives as much we are harming. Also in general people were browsing the pages first then they were googling and now they just want a quick answer through GPT so the more easier we make the things, the more people are going to use it but these companies must focus on the creating green initiatives first and to see is the product really optimized or not and would create a low power consuming solution. It is as the company's responsibility to create a balance between efficiency and power consumption. The company has its own choice to focus more achieving more power consumption and accuracy or they can focus on optimization where engineering efforts are put more on saving energy. Companies have their 0wn choice whether to balance either efficiency or power saving. Like in the 1950's 2mb would cost you the dimension of your room but currently 2terabites of storage takes only the size of your nail. SO in order to reduce the impact on the planet companies should redirect their efforts towards lower consumption, better efficiency and sustainability.
Interesting ideas. Please can you provide a source for your information?
We need rules for using AI to make sure it helps us and doesn’t cause harm. AI shouldn’t be used to hurt people, spread hate, or invade someone’s privacy. Everyone’s personal information should be treated with respect and only used if they agree to it. It’s important to be honest about when AI is being used, so people know what they’re dealing with. AI also needs to be fair and not discriminate against anyone. By setting boundaries, we can prevent it from being misused for things like spreading fake news or cyberbullying. With the right rules, AI can truly benefit everyone.
A lot of electricity has been consumed by AI and it has led to the reduction of electricity availability to others sectors and has reduced the basic needs of people like watching the news to see what is happening around the world.
Ways we can make AI to consume less electricity are:
1. Creating tablets, phones, laptops and televisions which are AI, to consume less electricity.
2. We can use renewable energy to power AI like solar panels and wind.
3. We can improve the energy efficiency of the data centers by using advanced cooling technologies.
So, these are ways that we can save electricity for our basic needs and take care of AI to be sustainable.
LET US STAND AND MAKE OUR PLANET BETTER THANK YOU😀💖💕
Both problems Tejas mentioned in his video are very important, however, I believe the second problem he mentioned should take first priority. Although we COULD reduce the amount of carbon emissions AI produces, it still wouldn't stop the fact that many people would still use AI when they don't need it which could even add up to all the reduced emissions, leaving us back at step 1. So, let's look at the root of the problem and not the branches or temporary solutions. People need to manage the way they use AI, this is the only way we can truly have a positive change in reduction of emissions. Some may say it's impossible to get everyone to listen, but in reality...nothing is impossible as long as we come together as a society and collective agree on the importance of saving our planet. I believe many people don't watch or care for the environment the way they should because they focus on themselves and not our future generations, claiming they won't be around to feel the dangers of climate change. So maybe we do need rules, even classes. Our communities could have workshops and classes to educate people on the serious matter of climate change and how to moderate their AI usage. Furthermore, companies could add time limits to the amount of use an individual has per day. The problem here is, are companies willing to sacrifice their profit? This idea, would bring lots of controversy because apps like Netflix are payed. So this brings me to our reality, a much much bigger problem, do we care more about our money revolving society revolving? Or do we care more about our earth?
Its evident that AI technology can work wonders in health, sciences, space tech, automobiles, researches, and education industries to name a few.
Still it has its own set of drawbacks with a special mention to environmental concerns.
The CO² efficiency, multiple emissions a resource usage are actually a cause of concern.
All these issues need to be looked after by optimizing the development and usage of AI.
I suggest we install datacentres near waste water treatments plants where in both of them can benefit from each other.
The heat produced by AI can be used to run the plants, and the water can be used to cool down the mechanical setup of AI.
Secondly to address the issue of energy conservation,I pitch for Solar energy and use of Solar panels to generate electricity.
Lastly to deal with gaseous wastage I suggest to opt for going Carbon neutral and aiming to set zero emissions protocols as followed by Google.
Together they can make a difference.
As an 11 year-old boy I really use way too many apps at once, it can even lead me to use split screen. (a mode that divides the screen into many section) So usually try to manage myself by using screen time or a reminder to leave the phone and shut it down as over using it can lead to brain damage, bad eyesight and even controlling you by dealing with many options and make you not a functional human to society as if you can't do anything without it or making you too lazy to use your mind for example: using a calculator for extremely basic and easy equation.
also one of its necessities is a lot of energy which taken from many sources mostly from non-renewable materials which not only bad for sustainability but also once it is gone, the government will be forced to make sites for renewable energy which will be very hard with a little amount of energy to light up factories and for the machines to start. In conclusion the technology can be very harmful and also very useful.
Okay to problem one stated above(AI using lots of energy) if people could use a better and more source of energy like solar panels which AI helps in making more powerful, they could produce enough energy to power the AI and people should be advised to decrease their use of AI so that the amount o energy being used would be decreased and also since AIs are very smart it's possible to ask AIs to help provide ways and formula which would help in decreasing the amount if energy being used and still b as efficient as it is for the second topic(carbon emission) using renewable energy like solar panels would help solve the problem due to that solar energy produces little carbon. For the other topic (how individuals use AIs) a certain search limit should be put on the number of things they search per day and people should be advised to decrease the number of times they use AIs
Hi i'm warm_squirrel and I think ai defiantly uses a lot of energy and it's not good for us because anything could happen and I also think that we should stop using ai because it's just being lazy when we could just work things out ourselves other than using ai to help us and it sometimes does not give us the right advise for us so I think there should be less use of ai. As much as it can be helpful for planning and asking questions it could be dangerous we should stop.
Regarding the problem 2:
If AI systems are consuming alot of energy so we can change the source from were we are obtaining energy ,around 80% of worlds electricity is being made from non renewable resources like coal or natural gas which by burning releases greenhouse gases which contributes to climate change instead we can shift to renewable resources like solar energy etc. this will help us run AI by reducing the amount of harmful gases released in our atmosphere.
THANK YOU
Problem 2.
Yes I think there should be certain rules for using AI and not everyone should have access to it because there are many people who misuse AI. Now there are 2 types of people who misuse AI which I classify as 1. Cyber criminals and 2. Students and normal people. If we talk about the first category now a days there are many people who are hacking innocent people's account or spreading miss information about them with the help of AI as recently AI has reached at such a level that anyone can create fake pictures or videos of someone to blackmail them and of course that's very wrong. On the other hand we have the 2nd category that is students or normal people because many students use AI to complete there assignments which decreases there creativity and make them dependent on AI and also some people just ask AI stupid questions for fun which uses high energy consumption and also wastes water for cooling down the system which harms the environment. So at the end I would like to conclude that only some people should have access to AI like scientists , doctors and many other professions which actually need AI for the betterment of the world.
I want to suggest the following solutions to the problem of AI using a lot of energy; 1) We should use AI in places that do not have electricity problems like insufficient power or regular power outages. 2) We should use AI in places that could provide power-hubs such as generators, solar panels, etc. 3) We should use AI in places where the power source has a large capacity to provide the required amount of electricity to run the AI systems properly, and to also keep them cool.
Thank you.
I think that there are many ways to solve that two problems,so I got one way for each problem
1.AI the uses a lot of energy
The solution:
Professionals should focus on finding more ways to reduce AI's energy use, improve algorithms and use energy-efficient hardware to make AI more sustainable
2.people use AI without thinking about the impact on the planet.
The solution:
We need To make people care about AI's environmental impact, raise awareness and encourage energy-saving practices.
If the world works together to achieve this,AI will become more sustainable.
One day when my house was being constructed ,I saw my father instructing workers to make some arrangements. At that point I didn’t not realise that this was the answer to problem A. When the grid of pop or plaster of Paris is applied , in our house we inserted big thick thermocoal sheets above it and as it is an insulator of heat it helps regulate the temperature of room by absorbing heat and hence temperature of systems can also be maintained . For reducing carbon emissions the simplest is to have more greenery around which helps absorb carbon dioxide and this problem can also be solved by energy literacy like by using more energy efficient appliances such as instead of induction motor fans we can use BLDC fans and most commonly we can use LED light instead of CFL or others . Through these small steps we can make a big change one day .
I see that both problems link together, as problem 1 is the consequence of problem 2. If we kept using AI carelessly without thinking of the negative impact it could have on the planet, then as a result, that would lead to more energy usage and co2 emissions. I think that the two problems are both equal in terms of effectiveness to the planet . Therefore, sitting on your phone for too long without realizing it can cause global warming , and eventually , if people weren't cautious enough of the time they spend using their electronic devices , then someday our storage of non-renewable energy will just vanish! As a consequence of the tonnes of energy used to power electronic devices and gadgets. If all people were informed about the amount of screen time each individual on the planet ( there's about 8 billion people on earth) consumes, they would realize how much energy and co2 are actually used each and every second. As Tejas mentioned, there are some ways to solve these problems , like: using renewable energy sources , like for example, using solar panels and extracting electricity from wind turbines and other natural and clean sources of energy , that without any doubt, will never run out .
For problem 2 it is not necessary to reduce the CO2 to save our planet as instead of letting it in the open air we could use this gas for industry in manufacturing fizzy drinks, water treatment and food processing.
The rooms that are producing CO2 will have a special ventilation system with vents taking the gas to large tanks, then to be transported to factories where we could manufacture fizzy drinks, have water treatment and process food.
Think of it, the biggest problem of the eco friendly things was the price but now you could use the cheapest way of getting energy and the only problem which was CO2 is now not affecting the eco system but instead helping industry.
I choose problem one because AI uses lot of electricity about 12% of data center footprint today is occupied by AI-based workload. and AI consume between 85 to 134 terawatt a year. the can renewable energy like air to cool down the computer.
In my opinion, people at their level could reduce the use of AI, by depending more on physically available books, which would constrain them from again and again prompting up their questions on AI search engines, eventually reducing carbon emissions in the globe.
A way that you can keep the systems cool is you can turn the systems of when you are not using it because as we know AI is running constantly and we don't always need to use it so why not turn the system up to reduce the amount of carbon emissions that is released into the planet this can also be a solution to help solve problem number one.
Some rules that should be put in place might be limited amount of AI use in one week for instance you could set a rule for three hours of AI use a day . you could do this per person or even per house hold by putting this rule in place it will reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that are released and will also save water because they wont have to constantly be using water to cool the systems down.
I want to make few suggestions on how people use AI without thinking of the impact it will make on the environment, some of these solutions are:
Firstly, people who use AI should use it with moderation, because it could cause headaches, eye problems, and other defects.
Secondly, people who use AI shouldn't leave applications running in the background while they aren't using them.
Thirdly, people who use AI should use it with the consideration of how it will make an impact on the planet.
For me I would say that farmers should use it wisely as they could only have one type and if they put it on their farms AIS can also malfunction at times so they should use it probably only once or even never because that they don't need it they can just grow it naturally, second I would say is children as all people who are in school are in a class still as they can be cheating on exams to ask the ai or ask chat gpt the answers But specifically for all of us I would say to use it less because right now we're causing a problem to the world it a causes another of damage 💔
Humans have been managing and solving problems without AI for a long time. Of course, it is much easier now, but is it all worth destroying our planet? I believe that it is not and that AI shouldn’t be completely removed from use, but I think some limits should be introduced, such as payment for the use of AI, that it is not accessible every day all day etc. These are not ideal solutions either but it would probably reduce amount of people who use it and it would allow for AI systems to work less at some point of the day. I believe that even the smallest step is important and can help in the sustainability of AI.
I want to propose a solution for the first topic named as "carbon clock", this carbon clock, is something extraordinary which will show the increase of carbon emissions in the earth 's atmosphere, and will show the increased data and carbons, time to time and every single day and also it will show the increased carbon also in specific places and their impacts. Every homes want to hang this "carbon clock" in the wall like their ordinary time clock. Every day ,in the morning, once they see the increase in carbon emissions in the world and their impacts, they will get motivated to address the issues of increasing carbon and contribute their Best decrease carbons. Thus, it includes individual involvement towards decreasing carbons. Let us pledge to reduce carbons and lead a sustainable future...
I was searching for information about how AI affects the environment, and taking it away isn’t the solution. AI is key to the economy and daily life, so we need to make it more efficient and sustainable.
One big issue is energy consumption and emitions, I was talking with my math teacher days ago about this. A solution is developing smarter algorithms that need less computing power but still work well. Also, using edge computing (processing data closer to users) can reduce energy waste, and placing data centers in areas with renewable energy would lower their impact.
Another problem is unnecessary AI use. Many people use complex AI models for simple tasks. Optimizing, shutting down unused systems, and using lighter AI versions could help reducing all the waste without losing It advantages.
Instead of removing AI, we should focus on improving It.
AI is so useful to planet earth, but us as humans doesn't know how exactly to use it (AI). Like for example people can use their laptop to write a word document and maybe they wanted after that to play a game and then they can go to eat dinner and in all of that time the charger is on and after all of this it may cause the battery to be not working anymore, but why, because the laptop can't take it anymore, he is working over time, so this is an example of not reducing personal AI impact... So what should we do about it?:
First we could make a limit for using mobile phone, I pads, tablets or laptops so we don't use it a lot.
Second when we open an app after finishing using it, we can close it, if we don't want to close it because we don't want it to be deleted, we can save it.
Third DO NOT put the charger all the time in the laptop when it is already fully charged because it is going to make the battery not useful anymore (it happened to me twice😅).
Forth do not leave your laptop opened or even some apps opened when you are not using them or away from them.
To conclude, I used the laptop to be an example but in general the idea I wanted everyone to come to his/her mind is: you need to reduce your personal AI impact for the planet. Thank you for your time, Topical talk.
The second problem Tejas mentioned is the real issue we need to focus on. We could work on reducing AI's carbon emissions, but if people still use AI carelessly, we'll just not be anywhere, we'll won't make any progress. The real problem isn't just emissions, it's about how people use AI.
The first thing we can do, is to make people aware. A lot of people don't realize how much energy AI models are using, and even some don't even care, because they think climate change is "fake". Schools should not only teach students on how to use AI responsibly, but also teach them the impact AI can make while showing them how to protect the environment to provide sustainability.
Another thing that could help is companies could implement time limits or restrictions on their AI apps, like the "screen time" that have on phones. At the end of the day, there's only one question: do we only care about profit, or do we want to protect the environment, create a sustainable and safe planet? Because, the choice you make, will affect the world we live in the future.
AI could be more sustainable if it helps us with day to day activities such as cleaning etc but it’s not beneficial in the likes of book industry as if I were to read a book created by AI it would have no feel/soul to it.
I believe out of the two questions proposed, the second one is the most important and effective. I believe rules are needed to ensure that AI produces the least impact on our planet. We should enforce stricter regulations on AI energy use. Perhaps, the government could tax high-energy AI models to encourage the use and development of efficient, low-power AI models. By lowering the cost of renewable energy, we could promote cleaner energy sources. In an article written by MIT, another approach is to make adaptable software that employs scheduling systems to reduce energy consumption.
However, big companies aren't the only ones who use AI excessively. A lot of people also use AI inefficiently and unethically. Some use AI to churn out AI-generated songs for cash and some use AI to generate pictures that they won't ever use. These are just a few common examples that highlight how uninformed the general public are. Some only view AI as a source of money and do not know the effects that come with their actions. In this regard, companies could limit the generation of unpaid AI content, the government could educate the public on the effects of AI, and social media platforms could enforce stricter rules to discourage the use of AI-generated content.
I believe that problem one can be solved by using sustainable sources of energy because this will reduce the impact of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. By using a power source such as ocean, energy will be easy to collect through the energy in the waves, and this is made into electricity without impacting the environment.
Problem two can also be solved by adding a notice when someone accesses a website that allows users to use AI. The notice can have a timer so people don’t instantly press accept and begin to use the technology as I sometimes commonly do in social media apps.
Ai is the most usefull and most controlling intelligence of all. It can be used in various ways, for example I love to make stories, by the help of ai I can make stories easily and make ai generated picture easily, and now there are ai video apps too which can help u to generate ai video which are too realistic,BUT to make this ai stuffs it takes lots of electricity and data , these ai images uses electricity which can charge a phone upto 50% and it also heats the device that can cause a devastating disasters to your device, to solve the one problem we should use device in a minimal hours and we should use our imagination instead of ai generated images
AI data centers are using more on AI computers, robots, and other technologies, which consuming more energy for both powering the systems and cooling the system. This high energy consumption can lead to increase the greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprints, and affecting the society.
To reduce these issues, data centers should try natural cooling methods and develop an different energy-efficient hardware systems to reduce more energy consumption. The creators of these AI centers must think creative and focus on sustainable energy solutions to decrease their environmental impact.renewable materials should be used to reduce e-waste, and environmentally friendly resources should be put into the design and project of the centers.
Furthermore, data centers should regularly update their electrical systems to control their power usage, moving some less data, use computers when they are necessary. They should set a fixed limits to use ai for a day and ensure that to reduce waste by using AI only when they are needed. By doing so, they can reduce energy consumption and contribute to ai to become more sustainable in future .
I believe that both of the problems are affecting the Earth and people because they are extremely harmful. I will choose problem two because when AI is used a lot, electricity besides energy will be wasted. Moreover, a lot of Greenhouse gases will be produced like carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide. These types of gases cause a terrible smell that can cause lung diseases that cause death.
To solve this disastrous calamity, governments must put signs in the streets to guide people to the right path not to use AI without thinking furthermore parents must explain to their sons and daughters why they cannot use AI a lot. Governments also must put on fines for anyone who uses the AI a lot
To conclude, humans must have a limit in using AI not to damage the Earth.
Tejas told us that AI uses a ton of energy and that’s a big problem! The computers that run AI need lots of electricity, and they get super hot, so we have to cool them down too. That uses even more power! But what if we could fix this?
One idea is to use clean energy like wind and solar power to run these big computers. Some big companies like Google already do this for their data centers, and it’s a great start! But we could do even more by building these centers in cold places, like the North Pole or somewhere naturally chilly. The cool air would help keep the computers cool without using extra energy. It’s like when you open the fridge door to cool down on a hot day—except we’re doing it for a huge computer!
Another cool idea is to make the computers smarter. What if the AI itself could help control how much energy is used? It could figure out when the computers don’t need so much cooling and save electricity. This is already happening with special chips that are built to be super energy-efficient, like the ones being made by companies such as NVIDIA. These chips use less power but still do a great job.
So, if we can make these big AI machines use clean energy and work smarter with better designs, we could keep using AI without making the planet sick. We just need to think ahead and be kind to the Earth while we keep moving forward!
Ai has problems also, example:it takes a lot of electricity , and maybe students sheet from Artificial Intelligence. But , the ai is faster than people , ai are made to help people problems. But , in our time so made something strange happen that ai are always talking about our personalities . And there was ai that in Snapchat that I talked with him I saw a story that was my wool. So please…🙏…take care of yourself from 🤖 ai .it happened to you also?
To make AI more sustainable we can focus on reducing its environmental impact by using energy-efficient hardware and optimizing algorithms to require less computational power.Implementing greener data centers that run on renewable power sorces such as wind turbines.Additionally,AI development should prioritise long term social and environmental impact solutions,This can help ensure technological advancements support sustainable goals.
chose problem 2 as it will help the environment more if we solve it firstly , To reduce pollution, we need to change or reduce the materials that make the hardware of AI, as it can affect and harm us through pollution. Additionally, it was noticed that a question you ask an AI assistant requires 1 litre of water for the machine to answer your question. There are a lot of other issues AI creates, such as its potential to help develop drugs that could be harmful; it relies heavily on computing at data centres. Those data centres consume a large amount of electricity, which companies are still trying to address. Sometimes AI can be used in a wrong way that developers of AI must be cautious about, such as how to rob a large entity. This can lead to calamities, so AI is not yet sustainable, but it needs an upgrade.
I would like to propose a solution for the topic named as "shifting to sustainability" and this project focus on reducing the carbon gas emissions released by the use of AI. In this project, more green resources like wind energy, thermal power resources, hydro electricity and solar panels will be implemented. It reduces the amount of electricity by AI . Shifting to sustainability means to completely reduced the carbon gas emissions released from AI and by decreasing electricity from AI,we can shift, I mean taking it completely to sustainability. Additionally, this project will also advise and give awareness to people to implement green energy resources like solar panels. We are not telling to install big-big solar panels in their homes, we are just telling to install solar panels on daily use and basic vehicles like cars , bikes, and more, this panels , and the people can use this electricity to run various AI websites. Let us all shift our future to shining sustainability...
Do you have any suggestions for how governments could encourage this shift to sustainabaility?
Absolutely yeah! Because the government is the factor, that can make the people to do something better, which can be turned out something extraordinary, like reducing the carbon gas emissions released from AI. Government is to lead people to go in a right path,so, the government can advice and create a great awareness to people, about the impacts of carbons from AI,by implementing renewable and green energy sources and this will bring a great impact on the society. Government can motivate people to install solar panels on vehicles by giving them small amounts for the people and by telecasting the impacts of carbon emissions from AI, in various social medias , which is accessible to more people and by mentioning this things every day international news, the government can give recommendations and tell them to telecast about this. from this, the government can mark a serious role in shifting to shining sustainability...
AI is amazing! It helps us predict and stop natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes. AI sensors and drones watch the environment, detect problems, and alert authorities. This saves lives and protects communities.
AI also helps kids learn better. It creates personalized education plans for each child, so they get the support they need. Every kid deserves an equal chance to succeed.
In healthcare, AI helps doctors diagnose diseases more accurately. It analyzes medical images and creates targeted treatment plans. This gives hope and relief to families struggling with illness.
AI can even help us explore space! AI-powered spacecraft can navigate unknown territories, analyze data, and make decisions in real-time. It's like having a robotic astronaut.
AI has endless possibilities. I believe it can help us create a better future for everyone.
Hereafter let's use AI in a constructive way. Thankyou
What an enthusiastic response! How would you advise governments to make sure that everyone, from their richest citizens to their poorest, could get access to AI? If not, do you think it might lead to inequality?
The growth of AI technologies is undoubtedly bringing great impacts but raises important concerns regarding energy consumption. The data centers powering these systems require large amounts of electricity not only to power the computers but also to keep them at an optimal temperature because overheating can reduce the performance. This energy demand highlights a critical challenge that is innovation versus sustainability. But I think this issue also gives an opportunity for collaboration. By investing in renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency, and developing innovative cooling solutions, using hydropower, solar panels to reduce the usage of fossil fuels by doing these.we can ensure that AI continues to evolve without compromising our planet's health. It is a reminder that progress must go with responsibility, and that humanity's creativity can be directed not just toward creating smarter machines but also toward building a more sustainable future for all.
AI is amazing but it comes with a cost, a huge electricity bill that harms the planet. The big computers that run AI need power to work and even more power to stay cool. If we dont do something, AI will keep using energy like there's no tomorrow. One of the solution is cooling computers with ocean water. Microsoft has already tested this, and it worked! Instead of using air conditioners that waste electricity, we can let nature do the job. I think more companies should follow this idea. Another solution I saw in the internet is using the heat from data centres to warm houses. I got to know that Finland is already doing this. Instead of wasting the heat, it is sent to homes, reducing the need for extra heating. Other countries should try this. Why let good heat go to waste? Also AI doesn't need to be awake all the time. Some AI systems keep running even when no one is using them, wasting power. Companies should turn AI off when its not needed, just like we turn off lights when leaving a room.
I agree your idea: calling s with ocean water.
However I think there is another solution. That is problems which caused by Ai are solved by Ai. It’s because our human can’t solve it but I think ai wil able to it.
Hello topical talkers,
I think that AI can never be sustainable enough as it needs 460 Terawatt an hour which could light power 460000000 for a full year or even fully power 32200000 houses also a year. So even if we reduced the energy it needs for even 50% it still wouldn't be enough.
Ai is one of the best inventions known to man but lots of people don't notice what it does to the environment and generally earth.
•I have some potential solutions to.
problems 1 and 2 let's star with number 1 (the data centers that run these ai systems need alot of electricity for both running the computer and keeping them cool) and the way we can solve it is by using renewable energy like solar energy(sunlight energy) or wind energy.
•Next,is how to solve number 2 I believe it's pretty hard as we can't force them to leave the apps running unless we make a new law. The only way I think we can do that is by not even giving them the choice to delete or we can just warn of the danger and harm it can cause. This is quite a hard problem to solve.
Ai improves life but you have to use it carefully or else the planet may be destroyed. I hope you use ai more carefully after reading this comment.
AI is used in many careers in this society. Whether it's a doctor using it, a farmer, a scientist, or any other person, it's no doubt that AI has taken a very important role in this generation. However, I think that since there's much carbon emissions caused by AI, we all need to take a step and reinforce some rules if we want to continue living on a healthy Earth. I say this because most of the carbon emissions aren't being caused by doctors or scientists, it's being caused by people who use AI just for the fun of it. Whenever I'm scrolling on social media, I always come across those videos with the people using AI to make funny or quirky photos, or people using this app called C.AI where you can talk to an AI who acts like any character of your choice. Although these videos can be entertaining and amusing, we have to think about the impact we are causing to our environment. One question can waste up to one water bottle to cool down the system. Imagine how much these immature kids are contributing to this AI issue if at least a hundred people are asking AI a question every day. I think in order to solve this issue, the first step is to restrict who can use AI and who can't. This can limit the harmful outcome we are having on the Earth. We can do this by:
- If the AI suspects the question is "irrelevant" or "has an obvious answer", the AI can't answer it.
- Only people in workplaces like doctors, scientists, etc. have access to it.
- Apps that use AI for students to cheat on their homework like Question.AI, PhotoMath, etc, are banned.
AI is such an amazing resource to have. These last few years, it has been integrated in workplaces all around the world and even has the potential to be as transformative as the discovery of the first light bulb. But here lies the problem - how will AI work in the long-term, especially with the problems Mr. Tejas has mentioned? I personally believe that there should be a limit set to how one person can use AI. My idea is there should be a "Green Bank". How will this system work? So, whenever a person logs a single query on AI platform(s), it releases about 2,9 watt-hours of electricity. This system will log how many queries a person inputs in a day. Next, at the end of the week, it'll show the total Wh that was used by the user. All users will be given the same limit, but they can pay if they want "more quota" (the money will be used towards environmental needs). If they went over the limit set, they'd have to pay for the over-usage. This is still a very rough idea but I'm very open to critiques and suggestions. I hope that in the future, we can find a way to collectively use AI in a more environmental-friendly way!
The rapid development of AI is having a significant impact on society, but it also raises concerns about energy consumption. Data centers that power AI require large amounts of electricity to operate and to prevent overheating, which can reduce performance. This increasing demand for energy creates a challenge. How can we balance technological progress with sustainability? To address this issue, we need to focus on making AI more energy sufficient. Companies and researchers should invest in renewable energy sources, such as solar and hydropower, to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, improving the efficiency of AI models by optimizing their algorithms can help lower energy consumption. Advanced cooling techs, such as liquid cooling systems, can also reduce electricity needed to maintain data centers. By implementing these solutions, we can ensure that AI continues to develop without causing excessive harm to the environment. Progress should not come at the cost of sustainability, and with responsible innovation, we can create a future where AI benefits both tech and the planet.
You are very knowledgable on technology and sustainability! Is this a particular interest of yours?
My opinion to solve the problem of using AI too much and without thinking that people can use AI in searching or in our knowledge only so that our world can benefit from us. AI is very useful to earth but it can make a lot of things bad like: playing so much, watching bad contents in TV wasting electricity also.AI do not have only negative things it have positive things also like: searching and watching good contact for knowledge. So people should use AI in a good way.
Answering problem 2, I think AI is really useful, but people don’t always think about how it effect/impacts the planet. Ai can impact our world both negatively and positively. On the positive side, AI is super helpful in the medical field. Doctors can use AI to assist surgeries, diagnose diseases faster, and even predict health issues before they get worse. This can save lives and make medical treatments more accurate and advanced. On the negative side, AI waste data centers to function. Theres centers use tons of electricity, which increases carbon emission. Alongside these drawbacks that AI has, it has also been making people lazier since we’ve over exploited AI to do our tasks for us. Instead of thinking or solving problems ourselves, we’re becoming more dependent on AI, which could make us less creative and less independent over time.
In my opinion , it would be better if tech companies are more transparent about how much energy AI ACTUALLY needs. Furthermore, making AI systems more energy-efficient could reduce their impact on the environment. AI is amazing, but we need to use it wisely. In conclusion, AI is a marvel of human ingenuity, but we have to use it wisely so we wont be totally consumed by it.
In my perspective, problem 2 is more important and has a larger impact on our planet. People might use AI without considering its environmental impact for several reasons.
The first reason is that many people don’t care about energy consumption. Some examples on energy consumption may be hot showers, lightening, computers and much more.
The second reason is convenience AI devices offer convenience speed and efficiency making it easy to slip up in environmental concerns.
A third reason is that people assume that some AI devices are environmentally friendly although they are not.
By studying the environmental impact of AI and working together, we can create a more sustainable future for our planet!
According to my perspective, I this this will bring a great impact on the issue always on fire , climate change. I would like to propose a solution named "ALTERNATIVE AI", this Ai will help each and every people to predict climate change, you can question me , that there is already an AI to predict climate change and natural resources like radars, satellites, graphcast and more. But, this alternative ai is a like a website or app, which should be installed in all people 's mobile phones. This will display the , day to day climate change issues and their possibilities and also impacts.During some great natural disasters like cyclone, if the people got aware of that critical situation, predicted by Al, they can safeguard themselves by shifting their homes into another place, it will save more lives of people. This will initially predict climate by verifying the records, datas , inch by inch, in all places and it will help the government to take initiatives according to the predicted issue. I think, it will reduce the lose of peoples and other extraordinary impacts of climate change issues like global warming, cyclones and so on..
I like how he says AI is not yet sustainable, and not completely unsustainable, this obviously means that there is a way out, but not now, so we should at least put a pause on the everyday unneeded use of AI as described in the video, but not the develpement I still think we should continue to develop it because AI is not something we can just completely stop using , it's a major step forward in human delopement and just like the industrial revolution we will find a way forward, maybe through other methods like the ones tranquil_apple descibed.
I believe that by using a sustainable energy source to power AI, it will help reduce the impact on the environment because we waste less finite resources that may be more important in different industries.
If companies use these sustainable energy sources, such as solar energy, to power and cool down the computer systems, it will mean less greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere, therefore reducing the effect of global warming and slowing down the greenhouse effect This will be a positive change because less energy is being used to power the AI, so more can be used for different industries.
I strongly believe that problem two - people using AI without thinking about the impact on the planet - stems from a deeper issue: our growing reliance on convenience over effort.
In the past, people worked hard to achieve their goals, and that hard work was rewarding. But nowadays, with AI providing instant answers and solutions, we're losing that sense of accomplishment.
Don't get me wrong, AI is a powerful tool that can simplify our lives. However, when we rely too heavily on it, we risk losing the value of hard work and critical thinking.
We need to strike a balance between using AI to our advantage and putting in the effort to achieve our goals. By doing so, we'll not only reduce our impact on the planet but also cultivate a sense of pride and fulfillment in our work.
Let's make a conscious effort to use AI responsibly and remember that the easiest way isn't always the best way.
Thankyou
AI currently isn't very sustainable due to the amount of carbon emissions they are producing. These types of gases are extremely harmful to our planet, and could destroy the environment permanently. I think that solutions that can be used to fix this is by using renewable energy sources like solar energy, which converts energy from the sun into power for everyone to use. This can be very useful in trying to resolve the carbon emissions issue because less energy sources that aren't renewable can limit the amount of carbon emissions that it is causing, improving efficiency for all. Another way we can help improve our environment is also by limiting the amount of people that use it. I think that AI should restrict who should use it, as in students or content creators. Students use AI to cheat on their assignments, which can destroy their knowledge of the subject. Content creators use AI by making fun and entertaining videos. Some people actually use AI for beneficial things as in scientists and doctors who use it to save lives and improve humanity. However, I think that we need to restrict some people from using it. We can do this by having a max amount of questions you can ask AI.
In my opinion, I feel like one way AI could become more sustainable is if scientists or observers find out how to reduce the gases and carbon emissions that are produced by AI. I feel like this is a good reason because people could get harmed and even killed by these harmful gases that are being produced in the air. And also, these gases are not good for the environment as they can make smog and fog, causing trees and other life forms to be harmed. So in conclusion, I feel like one way AI could potentially become more sustainable is if scientists or observers find out how to reduce the gases and carbon emissions that are produced by AI.
I believe that without a doubt both of the problems that Tejas Chopra mentioned in the video are extremely significant and important however honestly, the first priority will be taken by the first problem because simply it has a gigantic and negative impact on the plant, Earth. There are several ways to be done to reduce the carbon emissions produced by AI.
Firstly, people can use green computing techniques such as to use computers that work by the renewable sources (solar or power computers). Furthermore, some countries started developing the green computing techniques like the USA began to use the solar or power computers moreover Germany also developed and improved the green computing techniques such as they used liquid cooling techniques and temperature control.
Secondly, people can make small choices that will help to make AI sustainable and not to waste energy like they can easily close the game or application in the PC or laptop when they use it and not to leave it opened because when they are left opened, they waste a lot of electricity. This is like when you turn off the lights when you go out of your room.
Thirdly, using energy storage systems such as batteries or solar cells can be used to improve energy efficiency like Australia, Germany, USA, Japan and South Korea.
To conclude, DO NOT FORGET that every small action counts when it comes to protecting our planet, Earth.
Problem one: To reduce electricity using AI, one has to first make the model of AI more efficient. These models work on less computing power that helps in saving energy. This can be done by making the model simpler, removing the parts that are not required, or applying smart techniques to reduce the amount of data to be processed by the system.
I think AI can manage energy usage in data centers by optimizing cooling systems, predicting energy usage , and balancing workloads. Making both the AI models and the systems they run on more energy-efficient can lead to a huge reduction in electricity consumption while maintaining strong performance.
I chose problem 2 and I believe that there are many efficient and creative ways to solve this problem and reduce the negative impact it has on the environment. I think many people could have different roles in solving this problem to try to achieve the highest rate of reduction of electronic usage, so it is hard to reach this without many people whether governments or normal citizens, contributing. I think normal people that have access to AI or electronic devices in general should use AI for a limited period of time each day, they should also try to use electronics for at least two hours a day , this does not only help limit the usage of AI but this also helps their mental and physical health, as doing physical exercises or performing favorable sports is a ton better than scrolling through videos and posts on the internet. Directors and producers that make advertisements and programs also play a major role in solving this problem as they could make advertisements that may include influential people who have effective impacts on the viewers, to remind the audience of using less AI. Agricultural organizations can launch campaigns aiming to plant more trees , since trees or plants help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide as they take in Co2 and release oxygen. Governments can also help by building new sporting and athletic clubs to help people get more interested in more helpful things and reduce their amount of screen time. These were some of my recommendations, I am looking forward to know more about your thoughts on this.
I think the second problem is really important—people using AI without thinking about the planet. We often use apps, devices, and AI systems without realizing how much energy they’re using, which is bad for the Earth. If we’re not careful, it can cause pollution and climate change. But there are ways we can make a difference!
First, we can start by turning off apps we don’t need. For example, if you’re done using an app, close it. This helps stop it from running in the background and using electricity. It’s like turning off lights when we leave a room—simple but powerful!
Another thing is to make sure we only use AI when we really need it. We don’t have to use it all the time. If we only use it for the important stuff, we can help reduce the energy it uses.
One idea to help even more is to teach everyone, especially kids, about how much energy AI uses. If we all know, we can make smarter choices. Maybe schools could have special lessons about using technology wisely—like a “save the planet with AI” class!
Also, we could make rules about how AI should be used. Companies that make AI could be required to create eco-friendly apps that use less power, or even design systems that automatically turn off when they’re not needed. Kind of like a sleep mode but for AI!
Finally, we can all try using renewable energy at home. If our homes run on solar or wind power, even using AI won’t hurt the planet as much.
Small actions, like closing apps and teaching others, can add up to big changes. If everyone does their part, we can make AI a lot more sustainable!
To make AI more sustainable, we need to focus on using clean energy, improving efficiency, and reducing waste. AI systems, especially big ones, use a lot of electricity, which can harm the environment if it comes from non-renewable sources. So, we could switch to renewable energy like solar or wind power to run AI. At the same time, making AI models more efficient means they use less power to do the same tasks, which reduces their environmental impact. We also need to recycle old technology like servers and computers, instead of throwing them away, to reduce waste. If we combine all of these ideas, we can make it way less harmful and more useful at the same time
I feel so comfortable with the first option, I had taken more time, brain storming in this great topic, and finally came to an idea. Through renewable energy sources like solar panels, we can easily power AI, this is usual, but, where this solar panels has to be installed, in that point, I thought something completely different. Solar panels are generating electricity via sun. Nowadays, the people are carrying their mobile phones everywhere, when it is hot and sunny, they will caps, in that caps, we can install small solar panels, and the electricity to run AI will be generated from the cap they wear, and this caps are named as "conservative cap", from this they can run AI via phone in a sustainable manner, and also we can install solar panels in umbrellas, because nowadays, peoples are carrying umbrellas to protect them from the hot sun. I think, this is completely different and innovative....
I think I'll go with option 1, I think what could be done to keep this systems cool is by;
1. Putting a fine for any data center that exceeds the number of pounds of carbon emissions produced.
2. By purifying unpurified water to turn it into purified water.
3. Educating them on the dangers of producing carbon emissions.
4. Reducing the electricity data centers use
If some of this steps are not followed, it can change earth's weather to unusual conditions, it can also destroy the ozone layer. If people are to close to this places it can affect people's health as the machines the data centers, factories, use produce over 96 decibels which is enough to turn someone deaf if the person stays in does places constantly.
Data centers need a lot of electricity as their powerful computers and machines use a lot of power and energy. This means that other places would not be able to get enough electricity to do their needs. For example a government data center needs to do a lot of things, companies like cold room and electricity based companies would not be able to get enough power to perform people's need therefore they are most likely to shut down due to loss of electricity.
In conclusion I think data centers, factories and many more should be told on the dangers of overusing water, electricity, power.
The systems are very powerful computers that can make very different and useful tasks such as analyzing data or create complex tasks. As the systems are so big, many energy is needed and also cooling like air conditioners or liquids that also require energy. As the AI is becoming more and more used, it makes that more and more energy is used. And the data centers are increasing in size. Now this is contaminating a lot but in the future I hope there is something that can be done for a better use of it.
According to me, to make AI more substainable the AI should use renewable energy sources. The AI should reducing energy usage because it is harming environment and AI too. The AI should optimize the AI model. People use AI without thinking that it can impact our planet. The one AI search cause lot of pollution because of pollution the global warming is increasing. If AI use less water to cool down then AI can be substainable. I think there should be the time limit to use AI such as in a day you can just search 5 time not more then that or in a day we can use AI for only 30 minutes .If AI do not spread the pollution , the AI can become substainable. If the AI reduce the carbon emissions then it can be less harmful for our planet. The planet earth is realy becoming the planet ful of pollution. To help our planet there are lot of ways . One of them 8s 7sing less AI . AI can be eco friendly by just reducing it pollution produce by AI.
AI can revolutionize the world, but it consumes a lot of energy. The data centers with AI models need electricity for both computing (thinking) and cooling. If we want AI to be sustainable for the environment, we must find ways to reduce its carbon emissions.
The first step we can take is using renewable energy. Tech companies can build solar farms or wind turbines near data centers. Another thins is when an AI data center is running, it usually emits heat. Now, how can we make this not waste? We can use the excess heat for district heating. Cities can connect data centers to heating systems, reducing the need for gas or electric heating.
At the other end of the hierarchy, there's small companies. Small companies with AI solutions that provide big benefits face a challenge: how they can reduce carbon emissions while keeping costs low? Unlike large tech giants, they may not have the budget to invest in expensive green tech. First, they can optimize their AI models for efficiency. Ai models that require large amounts of computing power consume more energy. Small businesses can use various techniques to make their AI systems smaller and faster. These techniques remove unnecessary parts of the AI model, reducing energy use while keeping performance high. Another thing they can do is collaborate with big tech companies.
Sustainability is not just for big companies. Even small AI businesses can reduce their carbon footprint. Even though AI is shaping the future, but we must ensure that it doesn't harm the planet.
From my own understanding, Artificial intelligence often rely one exploiting social and ecological resources. Neverthless, they are currently often given the benefit of the doubt .Technology would sort everything out in the end, surely AI can also stop the threats from coming like;
1. Environmental harms
2. Job losses
3.Misinformation and manipulation
4. Lack of accountability and so on.
THANK YOU
One of the ways to solve problem 2 is to simply even set a reminder or remember to not leave unnecessary tabs open like Tejas explained. There are also many ways to reduce your A.I and energy use for example instead of searching up a simple fact you can ask your peers, this way it's overall very environmentally changing and can also help solve the first problem explained as well. It's very simple to save energy and A.I use especially around in learning environments that doesn't have to require A.I it's also a good thing to start preserving energy and unplugging lights, TVS, phones, tablets, laptops, etc. Doing all of those regularly and going outside most of the time could help change A.I usage around completely especially when we're the ones contributing to it either way.
If every community could chime in and do their role A.I usage can rapidly decrease although it does take effort and much work to fix. If you can actively at least twice a week contribute to preserving emissions and energy and also staying away from A.I there could be a huge difference in the world we see today and how it can function with new improved A.I from simply doing a small task can indefinitely benefit usage and how we use A.I today.
In conclusion there are many tiny and large ways that you can contribute to solve the problems and benefit A.I even more so with the new technology nowadays. I believe it is a simple goal and task for each community to help improve and overall get rid of the many problems we see in A.I usage today like emissions and energy waste in society today.
The second problem highlights how people use AI without considering its environmental impact. Many AI powered applications and systems run continuously, even when they are not actively needed, consuming unnecessary energy. Every time we use AI-powered assistants, facial recognitions, or automated recommendations, we contribute to the growing demand for energy-intensive AI processes. While these tools are convenient, they often run in the background without awareness, adding to carbon emissions.
To address this issue, companies could design AI systems that automatically enter low-power modes when inactive, reducing energy waste. Individuals can also be more mindful of their AI usage by disabling background AI processes, limiting unnecessary cloud-based requests, and opting for energy-efficient AI models when possible. Simple actions like closing AI-powered apps when not in use or reducing reliance on AI for basic tasks, such as autocorrect or voice assistants.
Governments and organizations could implement guidelines encouraging responsible AI usuge, similar to energy-saving initiatives for household appliances. Tech companies should also develop more sustainable AI models that require less processing power. Public awareness campaigns can educate people on how small behavioral changes, such as minimizing AI-driven streaming recommendations limiting excessive chatbot interactions, can collectively reduce AI's carbon footprint.
If we all become more conscious of how we use AI, we can help create a more sustainable future without sacrificing the benefits AI provides.
What I think could make AI more sustainable is for companies to be able to display or to communicate to individuals how much ernegy they use and carbon they emit everyday with the use of AI, and then the effects of their actions, by so doing they tend to create fear of loosing our planet among AI users and then the rate is reduced by arround 70%
For instance, choosing more energy-efficient algorithms, optimising the utilisation of data centers, and considering the entire lifecycle of hardware can all help reduce the carbon footprint of AI. One of the most obvious strategies to reduce the carbon footprint of AI models is increasing their efficiency. In AI terms, that means achieving the same level of accuracy of the most advanced models with smaller, less complex models. One way to save energy is to very quickly turn off regions of the memory that are not in use so that they do not leak power, then turn them back on when they are needed.
I have an idea to solve the Problem one: AI uses a lot of energy
One way to make it more sustainable is by creating AI powered digital trees which will be the systems that will clean digital waste just like real trees help us absorb CO2 and purify the air. Since AI uses a lot of data, over time the unsued data, redundant files etc pile up which increases the demand of storage centres, creating sustainability issues. We can rather use and program AI in such a way that it automatically identifies and removes unnecessary data, reducing the energy needed to store that data.
AI uses powerful servers that are running constantly, consuming large amounts of electricity. We can try to redistribute these processing loads, incorporate smart AI that could 'recycle' the exisiting data and lower the enviornmental footprint.
Thus taking a small step towards sustainability. This could help AI and these online systems more sustainable. What do you think? Could AI be smart enough to clean its own footprints?
To resolve the problematic that involve the use of AI, I propose to the corporations innovate solutions to create new technologies that can transform AI waste into renewable recourses to continuos with its use but being more sustainable.
Let's imagine a world where AI is powered by sunshine! We can make this happen by using solar energy to create eco-friendly data centers. This way, we can reduce harm to the planet and inspire new ideas for a sustainable future. We can make data centers cleaner and greener by using solar panels, energy-saving computers, and smart cooling systems. This will help both people and the planet.
I think that the reason we use AI without thinking about the impact to the planet is beacuse there are many use for it in our daily lives to improve efficiency. However to improve our impact on the planet we could turn appliances off when we dont use it or we could not use it as much and 'live in the real world' and i know this would be hard for people but only a little at a time could save the planet.
Hello Topical Talk,
In my opinion, the most deleterious problem is that its energy counterproductivity is super high and is not producing any useful to humanity except knowledge other than that its only making our life worse.
A really genius solution is transporting datacenters underwater as the famous electronical devices company Microsoft which is a soft and hardware producer or transporting it onto the planet Mars which Elon musk is currently, working on but facing many obstacles like weather, gravity, storms and protection which is needed to keep the data bases sheltered and intact. Thanks for reading!
Hello,
I think that both problems are very important and dangerous so let me tell you some solutions to each one.
PROBLEM ONE
AI produces carbon dioxide which is very harmful. In addition to that, AI needs a lot of electricity which is something bad also. So there must be a solution. Here are some:
1- Letting ONLY people who are in need to AI for example doctors or scientists.
2- Using it positively for example by using it to help women go to space (this reduces another problem (gender inequality))
3- By improving other things not just using it for fun.
I want to clarify something on solution 2 and 3, which is "people all around the world are already using AI so why to use it and we know that it is harmful but anyway we all know that people around the world will not stop using AI so let's take a benefit from it rather than just taking problems.
PROBLEM TWO
This problem is really difficult to fix but here are some ways to fix:
1- Make sure that we turned off our computers or laptops for example after using
2- Spreading awareness of the negative impact of AI on the environment
So as you see, all of these ways are very simple and effortless but as we know SMALL actions make HUGE difference.
To conclude, we can make AI more sustainable by reducing using it and to try to take actions and try to fix. I hope these problems be fixed fast to stop the environment from being damaged.
AI is popular, and is growing even more so with the convenience that AI systems have to the user. For example its use for medical practitioners, forest rangers, even online shoppers and the owners of those shopping websites.
However, this clearly comes with a cost, as the climate impact of using AI systems so frequently is devastating. Many new solutions are needed fast, and they should ideally be as cheap as possible, attainable to an extent within 25 years (2050), and still keeping in mind the importance of the resource for professions that have grown to have AI as an essential part of their practice.
Considering this, here are some possible solutions (to an extent):
Switching to renewable energy, for example wind energy, solar energy, and other such examples. I also think it would be worth attempting to use more Hydrogen energy, as the energy source is growing in popularity among cars, which are usually quite polluting with their usage of petrol and such, however, the clean Hydrogen energy is absolutely a breakthrough on that front. Although I believe it's important not to disregard that the research surrounding it may be quite expensive, since the first all-hydrogen energy test facility only opened in 2019.
Prioritising some professions/activities over others, this may be controversial, however using AI in your online shopping is just not as essential as the many medical uses, for example in cancer care. What I suggest with this is limiting the access of AI just to essential professions. I believe convenience just isn't worth the death of our planet.
I believe the issue of AI data centers consuming huge amounts of electricity is important, and to solve this issue, AI companies should think more creative and sustainable designs for their centers. The creators can use efficient hardware, solar panels and wind energy, to the current supply. and develop specialized chips like TPUs and GPUs, or use low-power CPUs. They should also use computers and tech items are only powered on when in use, as turning them on continuously leads to higher energy consumption.
Data centers also cause carbon emissions and greenhouse gases. And they can focus on knowledge distillation techniques to reduce the size of large files and converting them into small files to reduce energy consumption. Additionally, cooling methods like air-side and liquid cooling can be used to be more efficient. A hybrid cooling system, combining air and liquid cooling, can enhance cooling performance better.
By implementing these methods, AI data centers can reduce more energy consumption, stopping carbon emissions, and become more sustainable in the future.
I choose problem one. One way to reduce the carbon emission from AI is by using renewable energy sources like solar or wind power to run data centers. Additionally, companies can implement more energy-efficient cooling systems, such as liquid cooling or placing data centers in naturally cold environments to reduce the need for air conditioning. Another solution is developing AI models that require less computational power, making them more efficient while still delivering high performance. By prioritizing sustainability in AI development, we can ensure that technological progress does not come at the cost of our planet.
Hi all!
I feel comfortable with the option 1 as AI drains up lots of electricity like a super monster. I brain stormed about this topic and found a solution named," UNIQUE UMBRELLA".in olden days umbrellas are used to protect them from rain, but nowadays the people are carrying umbrellas to protect them from the burning sun and to beat the heat due to intense increase in the temperature and every person knows that, there is no people who doesn't carry phone everywhere and they will definitely use AI. So, this is project which will project will install small solar panel in umbrella by which they can run AI via generating electricity from the solar, in the umbrella. Don't think it's a normal solar panel, this is a panel called "solo solar", solo means single. Installing 5-6 solar panels in an umbrella costs more. To avoid the high budget , this one single solar panel is less is size, but more is power to run AI and also low budget. So, every people will use this umbrella and they will step on to a sustainable future where the high electricity , monster are defeated by "solar Superman"...
in my opinion to slove this problem dont use Ai for useless things cause this waste alot of energy and the energy is from the burning of fossil fuels and fossil fuels helping in global warming so that will damage our environment think about your environment before doing any thing
i hope you got my point.
AI has transformed multiple aspects of society, from task automation to advancements in science and medicine. However, behind these developments lies a concerning reality: its high environmental impact. As AI becomes more sophisticated and accessible, the demand for energy to train and run models increases exponentially. According to a study by the Massachuasetts Institute of Technology, training a single large-scale AI model can generate a carbon footprint equivalent to that of five cars over their lifetime. One key solution is the transition to renewable energy sources for data centers. Companies like Google and Microsoft are already investing in infrastructure powered by solar and wind energy, significantly reducing emissions. Moreover, efficient cooling systems can make a major difference; for instance, some data centers in Nordic countries take advantage of natural cold temperatures to lower energy consumption. Another option is liquid cooling a technique that reduces the need for fans and air conditioning, marking severs more sustainable. To conclude, in my opinion, AI offers multiple advantages, especially in education, as it facilitates learning by quickly resolving doubts and saving time on research by summarizing information. However, it also has many disadvantages, such as excessive use, which can affect the ability to think critically, gradually reducing reasoning skills.Additionally, it increases the risk of plagiarism and has a major impact on the labor industry, potentially leading to the disappearance of traditional jobs.
I believe that to control or solve the problem of the amount of energy consumed by AI, we should use renewable energy sources such as solar panels or wind energy to replace the power supply in data centers, which consume too much energy and harm our planet.
I also believe that companies and places that use AI should design systems that consume less energy, which can help make a difference. Additionally, we can explore natural data cooling methods, such as locating in colder areas or using liquid cooling, to cool data in a way that doesn't consume a lot of energy in a short time.
I think that if we follow these steps, we can help make AI more energy-efficient and less consumptive, which can help reduce carbon emissions and avoid harming our planet.
To solve the problem of AI producing too much carbon emissions first everybody would need to use AI lees but still keep it for when you really need to know something. For dentists that are x-raying teeth, or many other important people in the world. This would lower carbon emissions and keep AI for the people that really need it.
Second you would need to make a limit for the AI usage or a warning if somebody is using it too much. And to restart the system if it is overheating to cool it down. In conclusion limits for what people can do on AI will help lower emissions to stop global warming.
One major challenge with AI is its high energy consumption, which contributes to environmental issues. Data centers, which power AI models, require enormous amounts of electricity, not just for running computations but also for cooling the hardware to prevent overheating. This leads to high carbon emissions, especially when powered by fossil fuels. As AI continues to advance, its energy demand will only increase, making this an urgent problem.
To address this, companies can shift towards renewable energy sources like solar and wind to power data centers. Another solution is improving hardware efficiency, developing AI chips that use less energy while maintaining performance. Cooling systems also need innovation; using liquid cooling, placing data centers in colder regions, or repurposing excess heat from data centers for heating or industry boosts efficiency.
Additionally, optimizing AI models to be more efficient can reduce unnecessary computations. Many AI processes run complex algorithms that could be streamlined without sacrificing accuracy. By making these changes, we can reduce AI's environmental impact while still benefiting from its advancements.
I agree with you that AI is consuming more electricity to power data centers. However, many creators and operators of these data centers may not be fully understanding of the environmental impacts. To address this issue, AI data center creators can think more creatively and build more efficient data centers. They could use liquid cooling methods, air and hybrid methods to reduce energy use and explore renewable energy sources like wind, geothermal, and solar power to further decrease fossil fuels consumption.
AI data centers also produce pollution through carbon emissions, and the rapid upgrades in AI hardware are generating a large amount of e-waste. Possible solution would be to design smaller hardware and chips, more energy-efficient hardware and only power on computers and other advanced devices when they are in use. Keeping these systems continously on the results in significant electricity consumption.
Another consideration is the use of rare earth elements like dysprosium and neodymium in AI hardware. Mining these materials has negative environmental consequences. Therefore, AI creators should explore alternative resources for ai usages to reduce the impacts on our environment.
By following this methods they can solve the problems and ai is a great platform how we are using the platform its a matter
While AI’s high energy consumption is often criticized, an overlooked perspective is how this demand could catalyze a transformation in global energy infrastructure. Instead of viewing AI as a mere consumer, we can see it as a driver that compels investments in decentralized renewable grids and innovative cooling technologies. AI data centers, with their constant power needs, could incentivize advancements in microgrid systems powered by solar, wind, and waste heat recovery solutions, fostering local energy resilience. This shifts the narrative from AI being an energy burden to becoming a catalyst for accelerating sustainable energy innovation.
Another rarely considered angle is AI's potential to redefine how we perceive energy use itself. Traditional energy consumption metrics often ignore the "opportunity cost" of not using AI. For instance, AI-driven efficiencies in logistics, agriculture, and climate modeling may save more energy across industries than the power consumed by the data centers themselves. Thus, the real conversation isn't just about how much energy AI uses, but how strategically that energy is spent for broader environmental gains.
To solve problem 2 (people use AI without thinking about the impact on the planet), I would start by creating a platform that educates people on the impact of AI on our planet. I would create a team to go to different schools and establishments to educate children and people on the negative effects of using AI.
Apart from this, limiting and reducing the usage of AI in schools would make this situation much better. Most of the users in AI platforms are kids in schools, so reducing the number of users would reduce the impact on the planet.
I have chosen problem 1:
1.-To reduce carbon emissions from AI we can use energy efficient hardware which uses less power compared to other regular processors.
2.-We can also run AI systems in data centers that uses renewable energy such as solar, or wind energy like many tech companies.
3.-We can also improve AI algorithms to requiere less computar power making the training process of AI energy-efficient. Also we could use existing AI models instead of creating new one.
With this changes, we can lower the environmental impact of AI.
In my opinion for situation two is Yes, regulations are required to ensure ethical and responsible use of ia. this may include companies must be trensparent about how their algorithms work and how data is used. Mechanisms must be established to hold accountable those who develop and use AI in harmful ways.
Educating yourself about how AI works and its implications can help people make more informed decisions opt for AI tools that are sustainable and ethical, and avoid those that promote irresponsible use or misinformation.
Support companies and organizations that prioritize the ethical use of AI and work to mitigate their environmental impact.
Be aware of the energy consumption associated with the use of AI and look for more sustainable alternatives . Every person can contribute to reducing the impact of AI on the planet through informed and responsible decisions.
I chose problem number 1. I think that the data centers that run these AI's could use low carbon materials, which are materials that produce less carbon emissions than the typical materials used. Although these materials may cost a bit more, considering that AI is constantly becoming increasingly popular, the AI industry may make so much money it will have enough profits to afford these materials. I think that a way to keep the systems cool could be using solar panel powered fans in order to keep the systems from overheating.
To such a problem, is to find a way to use wind energy and try to find sustainable development in order to generate less environmentally impacting energy sources, and somehow or other to keep it more adequate.
The way to reduce carbon emissions is to generate renewable energy, such as hydropower or wind energy where there is a better environment if the AIs evolve.
People can contribute by using less AI, as long as way is found to regulate both cooling and CO2 generating systems.
The AI has been invented to help the world by helping people with their daylight activities but we are not being aware about the problems that using AI cause. A lot of carbon is produced when we turn on a mobile or a computer to produce an AI picture or a summary of one topic, this may cause problems in the future as carbon increase the greenhouse effect. I have been discussing with my classmates and we have reached some solutions: we may not use AI if it is not completely necessary as we can use books, encyclopedias or internet, like Google or word reference. This may reduce the use of AI without stop using it and will benefit the world as well.
Also we can develop another type of AI which might be more sustainable and easy to use, or a different one which doesn't use battery, because AI uses a lot and prejudice our electronic devices.
This ideas will help the world and communities also.
AI it is very useful now, but what about the future? When we are using it we don’t think about the problems this will generate, we only think about the summary we want, the information we need, the film we want to see, the game we want to play. We don’t think about how this generates carbon that as everyone now damage our environment, produce acid rain, soil erosion. It is important when we are on internet we know what pages are we entering and if they are sustainable or not, if they include fake information or real one… To reduce this I think AI is a help for some jobs so maybe only in that different jobs they can used some hours a day, and normal civilians only some concrete hours or days.
For a doctor it is positive and can help so it may needed a lot more than a farmer for example.
For a scientist is also really useful so it maybe aloud to use it whenever in a responsable way.
My conclusion is to reduce it we need to know if the use we are given on it responsable or if we really need it for our life’s.
The expert I learned most from during the festival 2025 is Tejas Chopra. He taught me that the potential of AI is absolutely amazing and he also said that scientists can use AI to find out medicine for different sicknesses. I use to think AI just makes people lazy but now I have learnt that AI is useful. We shouldn't be totally reliant on AI because it can impact on the planet negatively by creating more unemployment because AI can replace human labour.
Ai may be super useful and helps us in many ways like when you need to search for something AI would help us, but AI is taking a lot of space and hurting the environment, and it is taking up water, date centers contain thousands of powerful computers that generate a lot of heat when running AI models and other applications. The ways to stop these AI is to use water on them it also takes a lot of water to cool them down and AI is making less water, and we can stop it by using less AI and we can use it only when we need it and not just searching up random stuff and thing that you don't need to search and I we should make AI less powerful can take over us and we will become lazy and there will be less job and some people will be jobless, AI will take over us and there will be nothing to do. I still think AI should be less powerful.
Hello topical talkers,
As my mind went deep into the topic it signalled only one answer that AI will never be sustainable enough with the average human usage for it's side.
the amount of money was spent to it's industry as United States (US) actually gave 8 billion dollars which is more money than what some whole countries have in total.
Another reason (reason 2) people use it without thinking and only about half of the world have acquired AI so think about what will happen if all of the countries around the globe acquired this exclusive rhinking. I will this question to you, earth would be inhabitable from years and years ago.
This is why some countries make prototypes (high copy) of chat GPT and ban it because the prototypes have more uses and less energy consumption. Thanks for reading!
I can choose problem 1:
Imagine a future where AI data centers are designed with sustainability in mind. These innovative facilities could be constructed like green, sustainable cities, operated completely by solar panels on the roof, windows, and walls, and incorporating vertical gardens for cooling and air quality. AI data centers could also be located in nature-based, global cool spots, harnessing cold winds to cool servers naturally through wind tunnels. In addition, floating data centers could be powered by tides, waves, and sunshine, cooled naturally by the ocean. AI could power eco-friendly solutions, such as tracking and nurturing algae or biofuels, and incorporating living vegetation and natural areas into technical infrastructure. Wind power could be harnessed at higher altitudes using drones or wind turbines, and AI-powered "digital libraries" could activate servers only when necessary. As AI continues to evolve, intelligent AI "minds" could learn to anticipate power surges and eliminate wasteful power usage, while also managing energy allocation across multiple data centers with their own power grids. By adopting these innovative approaches, we can make AI more sustainable for the future.
AI is a really useful assistant that has the ability to guide us. For example, Tejas said AI can help scientists discover new medicines, help farmers grow more food with less water, and even help us predict natural disasters. However, using AI has a lot of consequences and brings negative impacts on our planet. To fix this, I feel like there should be restrictions on the time spent on AI. Time spent on AI results in climate change, high energy use, and electronic waste, which deeply affects our planet. AI developers could program a time boundary where you can only ask AI questions for a short amount of time. This will ensure that the planet would be much healthier. Another big problem with using AI is that it uses a lot of electricity. Like what Tejas said, we can solve this problem by using renewable energy such as solar, and wind to run AI systems. Maybe AI developers could make AI shut off when not in use to save as much energy as possible. Ultimately, I believe that the sustainability of AI could be improved.
A significant challenge associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) is energy consumption. Data centers hosting these systems consume massive amounts of electricity to power sophisticated AI models. These models require constant processing power for tasks like image recognition, text processing, and predictive analysis, generating tremendous heat and requiring colossal cooling systems.
As AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, its energy consumption is rising, raising concerns about its environmental footprint. Most data centers rely on fossil fuels, contributing to carbon emissions and climate change. However, some tech firms are investing in renewable energy and more efficient hardware to mitigate the damage.
The sustainability of AI is a legitimate concern. Researchers are working to develop better AI models that reduce computation and improve hardware efficiency. These models may reduce the level of computation required or improve the hardware on which AI models run. However, deploying these models at a larger, scalable scale is not immediate.
The question remains: how can we ensure that AI advancements do not lead to overconsumption of energy and harm the planet? As AI revolutionizes industries and makes decision-making easier in various domains and procedures, it is crucial to consider the environmental implications of its development and deployment.
With choosing problem one with it stating that AI uses too much energy or power along with too many resources to keep up with. An easy fix for this is to limit the use of AI, for example instead of random people around the world having access to AI and exhausting the computers out, you could instead have only people of higher stature and importance using it. People of higher importance would be like scientists who are using it to track weather patterns more efficiently, and possibly military if they are using it to help track and trace the surrounding areas for foreign objects as well as people. This could, in theory, reduce the amount of energy used and consumed by AI computers since other people aren't using it. This could also help the people around the world as many "new artists" are being found out to only be AI generators and they are using human made art and making generators off of it. With limiting AI usage from these sorts of people small lower rank artists can also get a better shot at sharing and/or making a profit from their OWN, ORIGINAL pieces of art.
Problem 2:Most people are guilty of leaving apps running in the background, assuming that it doesn't add up to anything. However, just as leaving lights on when you are not home, these idle apps are sometimes consuming energy, silently. It's easy not to easily connect to the bigger picture of how AI affects us, thinking it is someone else's problem, but in fact, everyone has a role to play. Each time we make decisions like turning off apps we're not using or trying to get energy-efficient devices, we decrease the energy that is being consumed and we don't even notice it. AI may feel like a trend beyond everyone's control, but in fact, we have more influence than we tend to think. If everyone took a second thought before they let their apps just run or used green energy to power their devices, those few moments here and there collectively would really amount to something. It's very easy to feel that our actions do not matter much, especially when we think about how giant the world's problems are. But in reality, if everyone thought this way, then nothing would actually change. We may still engage and take pleasure in AI but keep its environmental impact in check. Moving small steps toward shutting down idle apps, shifting to energy-efficient machines, and aligning with renewable energy sources may help us utilize technology while letting the planet off the hook. It's a delicate balancing act: enjoying the future without leaving an excessively hefty footprint.
With each use of AI, whether answering a virtual assistant query, generating an image, or crunching big data, it requires power-hungry data centers often in the form of fossil fuels to generate electricity. Some models of AI get trained for weeks on high-end GPUs, which consume as much power as multiple households' annual power consumption. As the AI footprint expands, so is it fitting to re-examine how these systems must be used and built with respect. Such actions would include; turning off unused apps, minimizing the AI-driven queries that are not necessary, and putting the device controls at maximum utilization. On the other hand, the developers and companies should design more energy-efficient models, improve the algorithms, and hire cloud providers fueled largely by green energy. The organizations and government institutions can also implement sustainability standards, make carbon-neutral AI possible, and invest in cleaner technologies. In brief, the future of AI should be aligned with the goals of sustainability. Lastly, we are to develop a technology landscape where everyday contributions to AI or large-scale deployments of it would be done to actually work with sustainability goals.
