Russia is not the only country where it’s dangerous to be a journalist. Around the world, hundreds of journalists are killed every year – and there are currently 550 journalists in prison because of their work.

What should be done to protect journalists that want to tell the truth?
For example, how could they be kept safe in a warzone? Or how could they be protected from governments who want to stop them from reporting?
Is Yulia doing the right thing by speaking out about this problem? Why or why not?

First of all, I think that journalists must be protected and this protection should not depend only on one government as this government might have war and get angry with journalists and turn against like Russia. There must be a global organisation like the United Nation so that it could have a bigger control on the global community and be able to force countries to pay fines when they treat journalists badly which is one way we could protect journalists from their governments.
To protect journalists in war we can't depend on this organization as if something happened by accident the organisation won't help them so they must wear a protection gear and there must be a safe zone in all national borders for all countries.
I believe that yulia is doing the right thing by speaking out to the public and convincing people. Changing their public opinion will make them protest, so their government will lessen to them so those governments make a huge pressure on the Russian government so the Russian government will treat the journalists in a better way in the end.
I agree because first of all, harm to freedom of speech is totally just wrong. Not allowing the people and especially the journalists is not just. I think inter-governmental organizations like UN and the EU should look after to protect the journalists, as its very important for journalists to publish freely, without any pressure or burden. It helps us and the others to know the details of the war, which is as of now being called 'special military operation' with no accurate and minute details. The Russian government should also lessen the strictness, especially for the journalists. That way, it might help countries know about the war perfectly and do the needful, which in long-term thought may help abbot the war.
I am with your opinion over this issue.
But I think apart from UN and EU, the other government agencies should also take responsibilities for the journalists of their respective countries, ensure their ethical behaviour and their security and safety in risky war zones.
The strictness of Russian government can be justified by the fact that they may consider the broadcast of their startegies and moves as a breach of privacy and hence have strictly forbidden journalism over sensitive topics.
Although freedom of speech is extremely important, but just ethical behaviour should also be practiced by journalists and they should take moral responsibility of what to report and what information to overlook.
I think you're mentioning some really great points here. How could major global organisations like the UN take influence on one countries' policies and politics, when, especially now, those countries just boycott or block decisions against them and seem unwilling to cooperate? How do we ensure, that every country is participating in this organisation? As we have seen with previous decisions, this method unfortunately doesn't have great success, especially with a repressive country like Russia.
How do we ensure that freedom of press and freedom of opinion is guaranteed in every part of the world, whilst not infringing on countries' sovereignty? I wish we were in a position to be able to make that happen right now, but I'm almost certain we're not.
They could be protected when they're in warzones by having some personal guards, or maybe their own weapons. Honestly, I don't think I can tell you how they could be protected by the government unless they are hiding. Y'know how some people are, if they don't like your opinion about someone or something, you could end up hurt or worse if you speak out about it, especially with a topic like this. If Yulia says anything against the government, they could imprison her, or shut her up forever.
This causes more loss of life, the guards and journalist can all be killed now and it draws attention to journalists. If journalists enter countries with guards the aggressor will now know who the journalist is and will know who to target. A hand held weapon won't protect against missiles, grenades or machine guns realistically. People also can't just simply carry weapons on planes. Terrorists can fake being journalists and use the weapons they take to commit acts of terror. Your suggestions are by no means bad suggestions but they have flaws which, in practice, put lives at risk.
In my point of view, I believe that there should be a special and stable arena, a "War zone" in every country during war times. This enables safety for civilians during wars and also prevents losses for both countries fighting, as I strongly believe that any country that accepts the other opposing country to kill its innocent civilians, which may include women and children, during war, then it is not called a war anymore... but a true genocide. I think that journalists have full rights to record what is happening during war, as our world is suffering from globalization, then cases happening in other countries should be reported as they may even effect other nearby countries. What I think should be done to ensure the safety of journalists during war is that there should be journalist community buildings away from war zones where journalists can report the news freely and safely. I think there should something called " journalist's rights" in every country's constitution laws that include the rights of journalists who want to tell the truth, and want to do their job sincerely. Some of these laws must include:
1. Democracy, as they should have the right to let their voices be heard.
2. Safety, every journalist should have the right to perform their job in safety, as now one of the most dangerous jobs is being a journalist.
3. Freedom, I think that every journalist should have the right to do the job they like without having to be stopped by governments.
I think that Yulia did the right thing by speaking out and not giving up to the government.
Your solution is a decent one @genuine_impression, but not all countries want journalists to have freedom of speech, like Russia. Russia is ruled by an oligarchy, a small group of people ruling over the country who want to keep power through just about any means necessary. I also believe that some, if not all governments don't really care enough about free speech to put it in their constitution, the highest honour for a law. Even if this was implemented by the United Nations as some kind of international law, it would be hard to enforce like most international laws, and they get broken all the time.
The story of Yulia was heartbreaking, as one was forced to flee a country when they were doing their job. To protect such incidents from happening, I think the leading collaboration groups between countries like the NATO, UN AND BRICS should introduce an agreement. This agreement must protect the principles of journalism in any of its countries. The formation of an International Journalist Protection Committee would result in securing the lives of several reporters in warzones. Certain mapping to where safe journalism tents could be established should not be attacked under any circumstances. If a country is found guilty of any kinds of abusive restrictions towards journalists and their family, then according to the agreement, it shall be punished by means such as higher import taxes. It is of course to the country's choice of whether it joins the agreement or not. Excluded countries shall also be punished if found guilty. Other safe countries should provide suitable shelter to journal refuges including active police protection. This committee could really make a difference as the world could see the real conditions of wars like that of Ukraine and Russia. This will bridge the gap between the facts put in front of the audience and the actual reality hidden behind the curtains.
I agree because people in the world need to see heartbreaking or in the other words devastating news about the Russia and Ukraine war without the person of information and personal experience acknowledging it.As you stated, "If a country is found guilty by any kinds of abusive restrictions towards journalist and their family, then according to the agreement it shall be punished" this newly introduced rule can stop a lot of abusive relationships between governments and journalist in countries. For democracy, people need to have a voice and with countries like Russia who claim their democracies yet they don't let people have the power a democracy should. The question that should is, is it really democracy if the people don't have the power?Or they could be a dictatorship is disguise?
Journalist is an important profession which connects the world with people and tell them what is going around the world. So, it is a necessary step to protect them so that we can get to know the truth of a story like the Russia - Ukraine War. For this, people should take initiative in protesting against the government who wants to stop them and support these journalists so that they can do their job freely and bravely.
Furthermore, it is a very useful step to speak the truth with courage to spread awareness amongst the people about the injustice being done with honest journalists like imprisonment and threats to their families. In this case, I would like to appreciate Yulia who put correct obligations on the government without any fear and conveyed the truth to the people. So of course, in my opinion, this is a right choice because it helps people to understand their problem and sometimes they take initiative to help them.
Before this, I used to think that being a journalist is an easy job. But now, Yulia's words have notified me that being a journalist is not that easy. There are lots of difficulties to be faced. Hence, we should support them in overcoming these difficulties and allow them to work and live freely.
You have raised some interesting points. What other ways do you think Journalists can be supported to overcome the difficulties they face?
Thank you ma'am. Now as we know, that journalists face a range of problems in their daily tasks, like threats and imprisonment. In this situation, people like Yulia Starostina who bravely take initiative in spreading their problems and injustices, should be encouraged and motivated through facilities like comments and various social media platforms. Also, these videos should be shared by us so that a large number of people get aware of their difficulties and support them. Furthermore, the government which is the reason for their problems, should be questioned in their news channels by them which the people should support and encourage them to protest in a mass number. This will form a majority and give a greater impact on them, also ensuring safety due to their unity.
In conclusion, I would like to say that this support is very necessary for these journalists for enabling them to work freely and remain honest to avoid spreading of misinformation in the society.
Journalists should be trained in self-defense techniques and safety training, like first aid and emergency response situations. They should also be equipped with safety equipments such as bulletproof vests, masks, and other protective equipment. During times of war, it is essential to provide secure transportation and accommodations for journalists, including hotels and bodyguards.
journalists can make use of advanced communication technologies like WhatsApp and Twitter.and they should store sensitive documents on hard disks or enhanced systems. This helps to avoid government restrictions and allows journalists to freely report news without any struggles.
Governments should also provide financial support to journalists for long-distance travel to investigations, particularly when high-level risks are involved. Journalists could create private software and use strong passwords to develop their security, ensuring they can express their opinions without fear into society.
Ultimately, Yulia is right that reporters should tell the truth, because the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been for a long time. However, if Yulia continues to report on this issue, she may face some struggles from the
government.
Protecting journalists is crucial for preserving access to accurate information and freedom of speech. We can support them by providing safety training, equipment and legal assistance, while creating stronger laws to hold those who harm jounalist accountable international cooperation and advocacy, Yulia's efforts, raise awareness and contribute to better safeguards for journalists ultimately strengthens press freedom.
Building on your unique point, I think we should allow guards to follow these journalists in the dangerous areas of Russia and Ukraine due to its dangers. By doing this the person creating reports the media asks for while being surrounded by those who can protect them. The goverment could also help by enforcing more laws on the silencing of these journalists in these countries by those who wish to keep themselves in a positive light despite their actions. By beginning these small acts, we can begin making it safer for journalists to embark in these dangerous areas and report the information we so vitally need before interacting more in these wars.
Protecting journalists who want to tell the truth is essential because they play a significant role in keeping the public informed about important issues. Journalists face many dangers, especially in warzones or under oppressive government. There are several ways to keep journalists safe. For example, media organizations can provide protective gear and safety training, and journalists could travel with security escorts or military units in dangerous areas. Governments also have a responsibility to protect journalists by creating and enforcing laws that uphold press freedom and prosecuting those who harm or try to silence journalists. On an international level, countries should work together to ensure safe entries for journalists working on conflict zones. In my opinion, Yulia is absolutely right to speak out about the issues. By raising awareness, she can help create a safer environment for journalists. A free and safe press is crucial for keeping informed about the world. When journalists feel protected, they are more likely to report on important topics without fear, which benefits most people in society.
You have raised some very interesting comments here and given examples of how journalists can be protected. How do you think countries should be dealt with if they do not follow these safety measures?
I think how journalist can be protected is by having military escorts that will not wear the military uniform or drive the military vehicles because if the other fraction sees it, they might think it is the military not knowing they are escorting someone, which can cause unwanted attention to be drawn and can lead to attacks. Journalist can also be trained militarily or in the art of war so that they can defend themselves when in danger.
I think Yulia Starostina is doing the right thing by speaking about this problem because...
She is telling people the truth at the risk of being killed, sacrificing her life for the truth. If people like her don't speak up, newer generation will think the wrong things are the right ones which are common perspectives about issues everywhere. For example Vladimir Putin and his government said that it is not a war it is a special military operation which is not true and many people believes in his side of the story but with the truth being revealed by journalists, younger ones and generations to come now know the truth and what to believe.
From my perspective, i also think Yulia has to be careful with what she does so that she remains an independent journalist rather than being influenced by the government, threatened or she sent on exile.
Thank you.
I agree with you because protecting journalists is super important, especially when they’re sharing the truth like Yulia Starostina. Having military escorts that aren’t in uniforms or using military cars is a smart idea because it keeps the attention away from them and avoids making them targets. Journalists should also know how to protect themselves if something goes wrong, like learning self-defense, so they can stay safe.
Yulia is really brave for speaking out, even though it could be dangerous for her. It’s amazing that she’s risking her life to tell the truth because, without people like her, others might get misled and think false stories are real. Like how some people believe that what’s happening isn’t a war but a “special military operation,” even though that’s not true. Because journalists speak out, younger people can understand what’s really going on and what to believe.
But I also think Yulia has to stay careful and strong. She needs to keep being an independent journalist and not let anyone control her or force her into exile. The truth is so important, and we need brave people like her to keep it alive.
You're making some great points here . But wouldn't the reports of journalists be biased when they have to fight in the war? And who should be responsible for providing the military escorts? I think, that the idea with the military escorts is great, but realistically, no one would like to provide them it even want to provide them. And what do we do when specifically journalists are attacked, highly visible by their military escorts?
I personally think that they could be given bodyguards or be observed using a drone to watch their movements to make sure nothing happens to them. Although, I think I agree with the drone idea more because they could be monitored easily. In this case, if they are attacked or taken, the culprit could be found easily and with little effort. However, if the situation has something to do with the government, I don't believe much can be done about it. If anything is done against the Russian leader, he would just imprison the one that committed the act.
I partially agree with you because drones can be attacked except if they are military drones. The possibility of malfunction exists though but if people act as body guards their lives are always at risks and they and might get cut and be killed or imprisoned.
Do you think there may be any other ways in which the safety of journalist can be secured?
I also just partially argee with you, because you named good new options how to help the journalists to have a safer life and how they can be protected and mustn't life in fear when they say their opinion. Very good, but I think that people who are watched by drones at every step they take, didn't feel better at all. Yes, they will be watched because of safetiness, but imagen you are watched by everything you do. And when a technical system (which is a drone for example) observe you all the time, there will be a lot of data of you, which can be used differently.
Because of this, I don't think that your drone idea is the best, but it maybe is a beginning for a safer live when you are a jurnalist.
I agree more to the bodyguard idea because they are eye witnesses and are more trustworthy.
A journalist is someone who "disseminates" newsworthy and truthful information to the public. If they can't simply do this, then they are not Journalists. When the information is a lie, then they are propagandists. That is why the actual Journalists have to be protected and preserved, spreading the truth everywhere and doing their actual job. How would you actually protect Journalists, though? In the front Lines, it would be best for them not to even be there but if they really really want to, they could be behind the soldiers and stay out of sight like the press from the movie "Civil War". As long as they are competent and listen to orders, they should be relatively fine and in one piece. In the overall country, to be protected, the simplest thing would be for them to hide, if they still desire to be a bona fide Journalist.
Journalist can be protected in wars by having bodyguards. These bodyguards can help journalists not get attacked. Also journalists can get information from people involved in the war. Such as army men can give information to journalists so have safer travels in other countries
I disagree because sometimes security guards can't help as much as people think like many actors and more political people who have died that have had a body guard their with them they need their information such as name, address, birth date, and much more to be protected. Don't see news reporters with information usually on website and such they are cast in don't just think oh its always safe because body guard. Many other people have died but they body guard. They need hidden in public eye and their information hidden.
I think they could be protected by their name being cut out when they post their report.I say this because when people post their articles it always says who wrote. By cutting out their name we can protect them because then the government cannot see who wrote it and cannot target them. This provides a blanket of safety for them to express what's happening while being safe and not killed or imprisoned.
Yes! I utterly agree with your point. I think this is the best options to protect journalists, better than having bodyguards or drones. These last ones are a nice way of protecting them when they need to get information for their articles, when they need to enter a battlezone with potential risks, but they cannot secure them from exhile or imprisoning. Cutting down the journalist's name when an article is post is the best choice to secure their identity and encouraging them to keep freely doing their job, with their privacy being secure.
I personally feel like Yulia is doing the right thing by speaking out about this problem because without having someone to advocate the truth there would just be a lot of misinformation spreading. Some countries make people report on only the good things that they have done however this is not right. Citizens need to know the truth about what is going on and the full side of the story instead of just the things that the countries want them to hear. Therefore, it is undeniable that journalists need to be protected. As more and more countries go into war with each other it is important that we have reliable news instead of the things that those countries want us to hear. As stated in the video journalists and people who speak out are getting punished making it more risky to report on what is right so now more than ever it is time to protect them. For example like secure opinion said we could have guards or even people who want to do what is right to protect them. By keeping our journalists safe we can help maintain the misinformation and instead spread the truth about what is going on.
Murdering journalists should be a violation of human rights and a war crime and it should be treated like all other war crimes. I think a statute between all countries should be written recognising the killing of journalists as a war crime and those responsible for the deaths of journalists should be arrested and prosecuted for war crimes when entering other countries. Of course, there is no way to enforce if countries sign the statute but it is a step in the right direction and something realistic needs to be attempted.
I agree that making killing journalists a war crime is a step in the right direction. I feel that this is the weight we should be dealing with when talking about journalists. Their jobs are to give the world a way to know about ongoing events, and to not have a heavy protection for them is something we should be worried about, since it prevents the truth of events from being known. Journalism is very important and thus should be taken with that amount of respect, so I think murdering a journalist should be a war crime.
I believe that they should do this because its not fair to kill innocent people who are just trying to make money for their family. It's sad that these poor journalists are being killed when all they want to do is provide for their family. But I feel that if they don't abide by the rules then there should be a punishment like a fine or something because doing this to innocent people I just so aggravating.
I believe that to protect journalists the government could have soldiers protecting the journalists that are going onto the battlefield to report. Although this may cause a shortage in army soldiers, this would be a minimal problem if they had groups of reporters to combat this problem.
I agree with your statement, but how about their protection against imprisoning or exhile? How can a soldier protect a journalist from a violation of their rights?
In order to help a journalist during the time they are in danger in a battlezone, a soldier protecting them is a very suitable answer, and soldier shortage would be minimal, as you said. But for securing them from being discriminated by the government, another comment made me think that the best option is to remove their names from the articles post. That way, journalists can continue doing their job in a free and safe way, keeping their privacy.
I think mixing these two ideas is the best choice for protecting journalists from both of these situations, before posting an article, and after posting it.
Journalists are without a doubt very important when it comes to being informed to the latest news that is happening not only in a small area or country, but the world. But being a journalist can be dangerous. For instance, journalists are being targeted by other people or groups and sometimes even killed, like what Yulia Starostina had said about her colleges being poisoned. So it makes sense for their country or government to protect them. One way that they can do this is by creating a fake identity or keeping their identity a secret by blurring out their names on any place when they say who the report was given from, or even creating secret organizations where they can report safely. A good example of a country that cares about their journalists safety is Venezuela, since early 2023 they have been using AI in replacement of real people to report news to be able to hide the identity of their journalists, which keeps them more safe. In addition to this, the AI could effortlessly change from speaking to Spanish to English, so it also has more benefits, and I don't feel like they're completely replacing journalists. So I do feel like Yulia is doing the right thing speaking out about this.
This is very interesting and does seem to provide identity protection for the journalist - how do you think the journalist who are collecting the information may be protected whilst they are actually on the ground?
Hello there! Sorry for not responding quickly. But now that I have thought about what you had asked, I feel like journalists could possibly be protected while being in the place where they are giving the report from by doing something simple such as wearing a mask or glasses. Basically anything that can hide their identity/and face. However if we are talking about protection against violence or just about someone or a group of people trying to hurt them, I think that we could easily just send bodyguards or soldiers that carry equipment to protect them making it not very easy to harm the journalist. Another alternative I had also thought about that might be a good way to protect them whilst they are in the area, is having them in rooms with perhaps bulletproof glass. Of course as long as they can also see what is happening out there in order to be able to report on it, while being in a safer place.
I feel that a good way to protect journalists could be to create an organization, unaffiliated with any country, that enforces international laws that protect journalists from being targeted for murder. An upside to being unaffiliated with other countries is that there would be no bias. The organization should also help journalists get news out on topics that a country does not want to be talked about (in this case, its Russia with the war on Ukraine). People who are in the organization can stay anonymous, so the government doesn't target them for following the organization. This would help journalism in Russia because it allows journalists to safely report on news in Russia without threat of death and imprisonment. It's important to address the restriction of journaling the truth because it is a freedom of press and is needed to inform the rest of the world about sensitive topics.
Journalist play a great role in keeping the public informed, however many face serious dangers when reporting the truth. A way we can protect them is by using AI bots to report the news. This would allow journalists to report the truth without being identified for prosecution. For example, a little earlier in the year I learned that Venezuelan journalists have faced threats by the government. If AI bots could be used to say what the writers have to say, journalists wouldn’t be in such harm. As for Yulia she is doing the right thing standing up for journalists. When someone risk their own safety to expose corruption, the world can take action. We need more journalists like Yulia, if there weren’t people like her people in power could get away with anything. If we allow governments to hide the truth, they could never be held accountable and we won’t be able to find peace.
Journalists plays a crucial role in society by uncovering and reporting the truth, but they often face significant risks that may lead to imprisonment or threat from the government. Another thing that should be done is that laws should guarantee freedom of press and penalize anyone who threatens journalists or harms them(the journalists) Public awareness raising about the importance of press freedom and the challenges journalists face can lead to greater support and protection for them. Public campaigns and advocacy can also help reduce and highlight these issues and the burden on them.
I Think Yulia is doing the write thing by letting us the public aware of what is going because if we are aware we can in turn then protest which will in turn make the government lessen the threats on them
The government should make laws to protect journalists across the whole world that want to tell the truth, no matter where they are. Journalists could be kept safe in a warzone if they could use a robot to look around, without harming their physical body. They could be protected by other governments from different states of the country they want to report on and tell the truth about. Yula is absolutely doing the right thing by speaking up about this and bringing this problem out to the public, as she has experienced her coworkers getting poisoned or threatened.
A journalist is someone who documents and shares a trustworthy and news related story. An announcer, or a broadcaster. Without a story or news to share and explain, there is nothing to journal, therefore, making no journalist. Someone who lies about stories is simply a propagandist, and the last thing we need is lies spreading across the world. This is why journalist around the world need to be protected so people can grab continuous updates and be prepared for any danger coming their way. How should we really protect journalist, however? Well, we need to first figure out a way for the government to allow all journalist to continue their story. Many governments likely use the news to find out what is going on in other countries and discontinuing journaling will likely only hinder their performances. Once governments open their minds and realize this, how can we protect journalists from what's actually going on? Well the journalist can stay hidden and discreet when documenting their stories. They can hide behind buildings or simply use disguises. If this is hard or even impossible for them, they can stay hidden behind soldiers or body guards that the government hopefully will provide or arrange. With protected journalists, truthful news stories will continue to spread and overall positively influence our Earth. Thank you.
Journalism is the profession dedicated to reporting truthful information to the public. It plays a significant role in society by keeping citizens informed and holding power accountable.
Journalists possess a lot of threat when they are reporting in a warzone. They are willingly venturing into harm's way just to keep us aware about the truth. As citizens, it is our duty to ensure their safety. Some suggestions which can be included are
1.Using drones for capturing live footage in hazardous areas, reducing the need for journalists to be physically present in the area.
2. AI-powered Risk Assessment: A.I models can be developed that analyze real-time data (social media, news reports, sensor data) to detect and warn journalists about developing dangers.
3. Wearable Safety Devices: journalists must be provided with wearable devices that can detect perilous situations (gas leaks, explosions), provide emergency communication, and even monitor vitals in the body in case of injury.
Yulia and her colleagues highlight the risks that come with journalism, serving as a reminder that this profession is far from easy.
I think that being a journalist during the war between Ukraine and Russia is a very demanding job as they could get injured or held hostage by the opposing country . As we already know a war can be EXTREMLY VIOLENT and can lead on for years maybe even decades which cause poverty and loss of lives. So think about how a journalist would feel being there in a dangerous situation. What if they were injured? What if they had children? If they were taken away from the world what would happen to their family? How would they feel? With all of these questions running through their heads they would become worried and less aware of their surroundings. I think that Yulia is definitely doing the right thing by speaking out about the problem she is suffering from. They should be kept safe by having safety wear.
Do you think there may be other ways that we can protect journalists other than providing them with safety equipment?
Besides providing protection equipment, I think that a law or legal repercussions for targeting a journalist to kill them could be a good way to protect them. It encourages the country to not kill them because it is law. Then, even if the law is broken and a journalist is killed, there can be legal repercussions put in place, perhaps a large fine or having supplies be limited. The repercussions can also serve as a way to encourage the country to not kill a journalist, since it will negatively affect the country, especially at war.
I think you can also use AI to generate AI avatars and a voice muffler. The AI avatars can make it hard for people to find and identify who they are. Then the voice muffler can make it impossible for these people to find them because they don't know what they look like or how their voice sounds.
So, I would like to add that the Geneva Convention has protections for journalists. The Convention talks about rules of war, things like don't attack civilians and medics. In article 79 of the convention it is said that journalists in war zones should be considered civilians and protected as such. This only stops if the journalist has a hostile part to play in the conflict.
Hello topical talk,
In my opinion, they are telling the truth and that can never be bad as they are doing their job, this is why they should be protected by many ways, one of them being countries from the NATO as they are against Russia and the countries in the soviet union. other ways could be to flee in a hidden way or another but this is going to risk your life.
the most sufficient way is to be protected by a great figure from the country or an organization which has control in that section and about warzones, they need to provided by gears and armor and safe zones at the borders which they actually need as they are innocent lives.
and about Julia, she is totally made the right decision but she needs a safe shelter. Thank you!
One way that we can protect journalists is by using ai, robots and drones. For example a reporter could be flying a drone and speaking into a mic without showing they face. They could do the same thing for robots to have the robot stand in front and use a fake voice.
To begin , some people think that journalist's job is not dangerous and unfortunately I was one of these people but after I saw Yulia's video and also the topic (news near you ) which was a part of it talking about journalists and especially Yulia's video, I was really sad and now know that their work is really hard,it is really a hard job . We have to solve this problem like their work is dangerous so we have to protect journalists in wars and they must have some strong people with them every time to be safe and in my opinion Yulia did the right thing to talk about this thing and finally, I hope that all journalists be safe all the time.
I think journalists can be protected by having people who protect them from being killed or imprisoned for doing there job. These people who protect them from being killed or imprisoned can be army members or bodyguards hired by the country to protect them. Country should make people who treat journalist badly pay fees. I think Yulia made the right choice speak out loud because she had given people informations about her colleagues and her job which made us know how they are treat badly, and how are they killed or imprisoned for doing their job. This is going to help us know how to protect them from being endengared
Journalists should be protected because they are only doing their job. And according to Yulia Starostina Journalists are no longer able to report on the killing of innocent Ukrainian civilians and they are told that they would be put in prison if they speak. Russia supports president Putin and they will always agree with the decisions that he makes. I do not think that it is fair that reporters cannot do their jobs. It is not fair that a person is imprisoned because of their jobs.
In conclusion in my opinion Journalists are only doing their jobs not doing anything wrong so they should not be imprisoned.
What do you think can be done to protect Journalists to allow them to continue reporting from war zones?
We can give them a specific passport that gives them confemation to pass through,or to help them with people that defends them
We can give them a specific passport that gives them confemation to pass through,or to help them with people that defends them
In my opinion i think that the journalist should have some certain level of freedom of speech, besides it is a human right despite being in an authoritative position the government don't have the power to shut a persons mouth up and all the other journalist in jail don't deserve to be punished for doing their job the press should be able to feed information to the people especially information that has to do with the war.
I think one of the best options to take pertaining the safety of journalist is to limit the content they can post to avoid putting peoplle in jail
Thank you tranquil_wasp! You say that journalists limit their content for their safety, do you think that would impact their freedom of speech or not?
In preventing and decreasing attacks on journalists, law enforcement play a big role. Having good legislation in place is a good first step towards protecting press freedom
Do you think that introducing legislation will be enough to protect journalist or would other measures need to be put into place?
I got creative and I decided that a possible way forward would be to make some sort of World Journalists Organization, created to support and protect journalists, they would be aided by organizations like NATO or the United Nations, this organization would give journalists the oppurtunity to be indipendent.
I am convinced by the dangers of journalism. The protection of journalist is not the duty of one government, it should be a collective decision of both the countries engaged in the war. We can’t depend on an organization or government, in the case of an accident, they should wear a safe and protective gear. I believe that yulia is doing the obvious thing by speaking out to the public and convincing people. People should protect against the risk of a journalist and developing protection against dangers for journalist.
Journalists should always be protected in war zones as the arbiters of truth and knowledge. Governments should provide them with marked and maybe armed details to keep them safe
Hello, Topical Talkers 🤗
In my opinion, I think it’s really important to protect journalists all around the world because some of them share real information.
BUT WHY DID I SAY SOME, NOT ALL???
Because some journalists say wrong information just to make money. But also, when journalists share information that is wrong AND interesting… people might believe it’s real! They could repeat it at work, write it in important documents, and this could cause serious problems—like someone losing their job, getting disqualified from a competition, or worse.
BUT WHAT SHOULD BE DONE TO STOP THIS???
Actually, it depends on the country. They should make fines for journalists who spread false information.
But how can the country do this???
They can create companies to check if the information is correct. Then, they can send a message to users telling them if the information is true or wrong.
If it is wrong… the company should give a fine for the false information AND stop the text, video, or whatever from being shared.
THANKS FOR READING, TOPICAL TALKERS! 😊
In my opinion, journalists should be protected by both the state and international organizations as they have real threats to their lives. In warzones, for example, reporters risk death or injury simply by documenting events that are too close to the frontlines. Authoritarian regimes silence any dissenting voices with threats of imprisonment, harassment, and in more extreme cases, violence.
And it isn't just governments targeting journalists. Organized crime syndicates target investigative journalists who expose corruption or illegal activities. Even in democratic nations, journalists still face public backlash. They range from harmless troll posts, to legal intimidation tactics such as defamation tactics ("SLAPPs"). All of these issues don't just affect individual lives, they also threaten the delivery of accurate, truthful info to the public eye.
But we need to protect journalists. In both warzones and social media. International organizations such as the United Nations or UNESCO could establish safe spaces for journalists in warzones so the risk of fatalities decreases. Another point I don't see brought up often is teaching journalists how to live in warzones. Training and equipment needs to be provided.
As in Yulia's work, she is a role model for journalists but she might be a face that people don't like to see which in turn makes people want to hurt journalists as the face of journalism advocacy is someone they don't like. This is one aspect I personally don't see brought up. Yulia's selfness may cause more harm than good.
Journalists play a crucial role in uncovering the truth but their safety must be a priority. To protect them, international organizations and governments should enforce stronger laws against attacks on journalists, provide them with protective equipment in warzones and offer legal and financial support for those facing persecution. For example, Brent Renaud, an American journalist, was killed while reporting on the war in Ukraine, showing the real dangers reporters face in conflict zones. Independent media outlets should also work together to amplify their voices, making it harder for oppressive governments to silence them.
Yulia Starostina is doing the right thing by speaking out because raising awareness in the first step toward change. By sharing her story, she highlights the dangers journalists face and encourages global support for press freedom. However, her bravery comes with great risks, which is why more must be done to protect those who risk everything to report the truth.
In conclusion, journalists like Yulia Starostina risk their safety to uncover the truth, making their protection essential. Stronger laws, international support and protective measures in warzones are needed to ensure press freedom. Speaking out is brave ad necessary but more must be done to safeguard those who report the truth.
In places where wars are happening , like Ukraine and Russia , it's supper important to keep journalist safe . Journalists are the people who tell us what's really going on , so we need to protect them ! To keep them safe , we can give them special safety gear like helmets and bulletproof vests. We can also teach them how to stay safe in dangerous places and make sure they have friends and helpers they can call if they need help . It's also really important that governments can't stop journalists from doing their jobs or hurting them . We need to make sure governments know they can't get away with that kind of stuff.
Yulia's decision to speak out about these issues is essential in raising awareness and galvanizing public support for the protection of journalists . By voicing concerns and encouraging open dialogue , individuals can help to create change and ensure that journalists are able to carry out their crucial work without fear of harm or censorship . So we need to work together to help journalists !
Journalists could be protected with military soldiers,or with guards so they can report on news safely. Many journalists are killed because they are not protected. For example At Least 68 were killed in 2024. Yes Yulia is doing the right thing because journalists need to be protected, they are very important. They help inform those who can't be in problems live and help educate the people on real world problems.
Protecting journalists who seek to report the truth in Russia during wartime requires a multi-pronged approach focusing on both immediate safety and long-term systemic change. I believe legal representation is crucial to protecting the journalists speaking out to what is right. Access to pro bono legal counsel specializing in press freedom and human rights is crucial to navigate potential legal challenges and provide defense in cases of arrest or prosecution. As Yulia states, she had migrated to Poland in protection of speaking out towards the war.
I do believe Yulia is doing the right thing by speaking out about this problem. If no one talks about what happens behind the screen; without personal stories, they will never know what the people caught in the crossfire truly experience. Russia conceals what truly happens under a facade saying that it isn't a war and only just a "special military operation".
Hello everyone !
Yulia'maam's story... it's just heartbreaking. I can only imagine how tough it must be for Russian journalists who risk everything to tell the truth. I mean, can you even imagine being forced to flee your home, living in exile, and hiding your sources just to do your job? It's terrifying. We need to stand up for them. International organisations must condemn Russia's attacks on press freedom. We owe it to them to share their stories and support independent media outlets. Yulia ma'am, I'm seriously in awe of your courage. Keep fighting, and I'll be right there with you, cheering you on and spreading the word. Your bravery is inspiring, and I know that together, we can make a difference. We need to raise awareness about the importance of press freedom and the risks journalists face. We must support organizations that protect journalists and promote independent media. This is crucial for democracy and human rights. We can't let fear and intimidation silence the truth.
Thank you !
Journalists play a crucial role in society by informing people about important events, but their work sometimes could be dangerous, especially in war zones or under oppressive governments. To protect them, international organizations should create stronger laws and sanctions against those who threaten or attack journalists. Also, media companies should provide better security training and equipment for reporters in dangeraus areas.
I think international protection can help boost journalism .
if journalists have sponsors outside then country that are more than the ones threatning them they can gain protection and will not be harmed or disturbed again . For instance if a state journalist have backup from the federal government , he or she is safe to say news that are true because they have a stronger backup .
This would work very well with my comment because a "World Journalists Organization" should have international support instead of having backing from only one party, this could even help more people realize their love for journalism without fear of censorship or persecution.
I think that both countries don't harm journalists. They should have someway of standing out so they do not get harmed.
I think that journalists can be seen as a type of spy that could spread inaccurate and misleading information about a country which means that if an enemy kills a suspicious journalists people shouldn't see this as something terrible however if a journalist is trying to tell the truth about something they would have to break rules to do that as we've seen in the past where journalists have broken into facilities to show stuff how bad vivisection is.
I believe that while journalists of differnt news outlets are reporting on wars, there should be camps set up for them in lots of different locations across the warzone so they can report on different stories across the countries. It is vital for reporters to cover these stories so people can stay up to date, but their safety must come first. To protect these camps, each news outlet based in a certain country should send a small amount of soldiers to prevent any night raids by either side of the war.
The story of Yulia was indeed heartbreaking and I feel that these journalists should be protected at all costs. This is because journalism is a truly crucial job as it connects the world with the latest news without any biases and without any propaganda.I feel that individuals can't change this and there should be a bigger organisation specified for this work like United Nations,BRICS etc for protection of the journalists. Also in case a war occurs,it should take place in a particular battlefield where there is no bloodshed of innocent people and journalists who just want to report the reality to the world. Some organisations like CPJ have started and are starting to get recognition but not at a global level.I feel that the journalists should be given special safety and should be given them these freedoms-
•Freedom of speech
•Freedom to report the real news to the world without any obligations
•Freedom to report news without propoganda and threats
These freedoms will ensure the work occurs without any difficulty and proper safety...
To conclude i would like to say that the journalists have no fault and need not be given harsh punishments. They should be let to do their work and let them bring the truth in front of the world and should be provided safety to them and their families.
In my opinion all journalists should have the right to speak up and say the truth about there country whether its right or wrong and they should do it while feeling safe and not threatened. The whole point of their job is to speak the truth and spread the news about their country so why cant they do it without being scared?
Yes, I think journalists should be protected. How they are going to be protected is by law in any of these incidents about journalists both the freedom of press and the freedom of speech should come up in the conversation. If these laws are not already in place just watch and see what happens to the innocent journalist in your country and you'll see why you need them. They could be save from other governments and warzone by staying in a discreet location and when going live use AI people to report the truth. She did do the right thing by speaking up because their voice and experiences need to be heard and see for people to stop this problem.
I think journalists who want to tell the truth should be protected by:
-Keeping a distance from the actual war zone.
-Staying secret and undercover to avoid unwanted attention from the government and people.
-Journalists should have underground safe houses.
All these actions will ensure their safety.
Yes I do think Yulia is doing the right speaking out about this problem, affecting hundreds of journalists around the world. Sometimes these type problems are overlooked and underestimated on their negative impact. It is negatively Impacting global trends, human rights and social consequences.
In my honest opinion i agree with Yulia and her speaking out about this problem, I also think journalists safety should be a more often discussed topic among people.
In my opinion Journalists who risk everything to report the truth deserve real protection. In war zones, they need security, the right gear, and backup from international organizations like NATO BRICS etc. When governments tries to silence them, they need legal support, safe channels to publish, and sometimes even a way out to keep doing their work safely without being threatened.
Yulia is absolutely right to speak up the reality.if no one calls out these threats, they only get worse. A free press and journalism keeps people informed and holds power accountable, so protecting journalists isn’t just about them—it’s about protecting the truth and reality itself
From my point of view, it is difficult to help Russian journalists as the government makes it very hard. On the one hand, if they try to contact other countries or organizations for help, they could be watched and punished. On the other hand, some of them want to leave Russia for safety, but escaping can be difficult because the government might stop them from traveling. To help the journalists in Russia, foreign governments or organizations can help by supporting independent news websites that work from outside Russia. These media channels could still report the truth and share important information about the war and the people with people inside Russia. However, I also think that helping from outside can be very risky, as the repressive government blocks websites as well as punishes and persecutes anyone who works with foreign groups. In my opinion, Yulia is brave for speaking out about this problem. Even though, it is uncertain, it helps people from all around the world to understand what is happening, and notice how dangerous it can be for journalists to report on corruption. Besides, Yulia reporting about the problem, the journalists face in Russia, can inspire others to care and trying to help.
Hi everyone,
I think journalists must be protected because, to protect journalists, we should make sure strong legal protections for press freedom because journalists have the right to freedom of expression and press as I was taught about Human right. we should provide physical safety and resources, especially in dangerous areas like a conflict zone; in Syria and Ukraine, and political protest. Hold accountable those who threaten or harm journalists means that those who try to attack them should face consequences for their action. Create support systems like legal aid and emergency funds which means setting up resources or materials that help the journalists in needs for example if the want to fly out of the dangerous country or for medical care after an attack they will not have to pay for flight or any hospital bill's. Raise public awareness about the importance of a free press, through education and having support from they citizen's.
So am saying that journalists should be protected at all times but when they are saying they truth they should be protected but if they are not saying they truth they should not be protected.
Thanks.
I think we all can use AI to protect journalists. We actually are!!!!! In Venezuela. President Nicholas Maduro says he won the election because of his honesty . But many people disagree and journalists in Venezuela are at risk . To stay safe , they’re reporting the news with AI avatars. They’re using two AI avatars called La Chama (the girl) and El Pana ( the dude ) the avatars read the news reports from over 100 journalists and 20 Venezuelan news organisations. These organisations also fact check each report. Similarly we can use these technologies and protect our journalists.
What an original reply! It made me go straight away to look online for La Chama and El Pana.
I think that these questions can't be answered at one time; however, they will be in a list of questions with their answers. The following is the list :
What should be done to protect journalists who want to tell the truth?
In warzones, journalists should be completely safe in any warzone as any innocent civilian, due to international rules; as well as, safety training in places such as warzones is not that simple; journalists need to have safety training to be sure they are completely safe and if the war gets more dangerous there should be planning to get them out.
How could they be protected from governments who want to stop them from reporting?
Laws, simply, strong knowledge of laws in any country can protect journalists from threats or fears.
International help, meaningfully, help from other countries or organizations to pressure the country's government to be sure of the journalist's safety; also social networks a journalist knows can protect them.
Is Yulia doing the right thing by speaking out about this problem?
Yes, my thoughts lead me to the answer of " yes " as she talks about the problems journalists face as real journalists; moreover, she tries to take action on this issue. Finally, I want to say that this can encourage people to take action with you; hence, if you see there is a problem that should be solved, you have the right to say what you think with the support of many other things such as laws or countries.
I believe that it is the right that journalists from around the world report what they see and happens because simply, it is their job to do this. Furthermore, as Yulia said in her video that if a journalist reports fake news, he is not a journalist however he is a liar.
Why do journalists report fake news?
Because governments threaten journalists not to report sensitive news not to effect on the country's economy consequently governments can threaten them even with execution for example, there was a Syrian politician called Mazen Hamada. He reported a lot of news about what was cause by Bashar Al Assad. At the end, he was suffered and executed because of what he reported. This is not fair at all.
How can the journalist be protected?
In the war zones, governments can offer bodyguards that protect them from any harm moreover they can be offered with helmets, flak jackets and gas masks also governments must provide the journalists with financial support to help them to be healed and cured. Journalist also can use fake names to report the sensitive news on the social media without any harms in addition they can use flying drones to report news while they are in their houses without any damage in their health or mentality. Governments also must provide the journalists with psychological support to heal them from trauma.
To conclude, I think that governments must give the journalists their rights subsequently they can report the right news not to be scared from the government's action.
Thank you.
I think the things that should be done to protect Journalists is for them to undergo security training and learn how to use defensive weapons to defend themselves so that when they enter warzones, they will know how to react and defend themselves when they are being attacked, another way of keeping Journalists safe is by sending backup teams to help Journalists if they cannot strike back to the enemies, one more way to keep Journalists safe is by creating an atmosphere where Journalists can be treated when they are injured. There should also be laws that will protect the rights of Journalists.
Right now, journalists who are reporting against the will of a repressive regime find it really hard to report without facing dangers and threats to themselves. It will be very hard to keep them safe in such environments. We already have a little bit of protection for journalists on the battlefield, by letting them wear a "PRESS" vest. Though because most of the journalists working on the battlefield follow troops from one side, they are likely to get hit by an airstrike ot other attacks which might target the troop, as it is not visible for the other troops that they are attacking journalists. One solution could be to send special, independent and neutral UN troops who accompany and protect the journalists. There could be a open source map, which displays locations at which journalists could be to avoid accidental attacks. Though this would require all the conflicting parties to value the security of journalists. And as we have seen, rather the opposite is true of either side of most wars nowadays. The map could be used to specifically target journalists.
Ultimately, there will always be a risk of being a journalist reporting from a battlefield. This risk could be minimised, but it would require extensive and immense effort to not be biased towards one side as it is often the case when journalists are accompanying troops, as it is mostly done right now. And realistically, this will probably continue to be the case as most countries in the world don't value freedom of press anymore or are even against it.
I think journalist should be protected if they arent disrupting the system. what i mean is; ive seen several journalist in forms of conflicts, or country with poor standards of living, just report on that. they arent doing any wrong, they are just informing. when they inform, they give new outlets across the world something to work with, which will then be reported on from said news person, and brought to the 'world' (or just community.)
however, i do see how if a journalist could get introuble for false information on the goverment, or giving citizens the wrong ideas. this does seem unethical.
Yulia is definitely doing the right thing on speaking up, because this is never a scenario that wouldve crossed my mind. shes also brave for speaking up about it, and it gave me a nice retrospective for the other journalist ive seen in areas i said earlier.
The journalist require physical protection by the government in an conflict zone and the journalist should have proper gear and bulletproof vest which could protect them from bullets. Even to avoid areas where there are land mines. There should be safe evacuation plans for the journalist to escape war zones. Both international and local organisations should draw a map out of conflict zones when necessary. Both the countries organisation should not trouble or harass them in the battlefield and these journalists should be given training to how to deal with problems during a war and should be allowed to give their honest reply’s about the Russia-Ukraine war without any pressure of media or government as journalist are very important people as they provide us with real time news and information about important events.
What happened to Yulia, her various colleagues and other journalists in Russia or what is truly happening to them is heartbreaking yet an eye opener at the same time , it is a harsh reality of the journalists that voice the truth and become the medium for those who are unheard being faced with prison and persecution.
There is a committee known as the CPJ - Committee for Protection of Journalists, a non-profit organisation that works for the protection of journalists, these organisations work for the conveyors of the truth at the small scale, however there needs to be efforts by not just governmets but the UN, EU, NATO,BRICS,Group of friends , media channels and journalists. While UN can impose strict laws assuring and aiding the freedom of speech, the BRICS and NATO nations can work collaboratively to first protect the journalists and grant them rights and then focus on other countries that don't give freedom to their journalists and impose strict sanctions and bans for the ill-treatment of journalists.
During the wars the UN should focus on providing security to the journalists reporting on ground and lay international guidelines for the reporting in the warzones and ensure that they are being followed.
Every fire is ignited by a mere spark, in the case of rights of journalists Yulia is that spark that is igniting and bringing this issue in the light for good and other countries should support journalists coming out and sharing their stories.
Journalists play a very crucial role in informing the world, but they face many serious dangers for telling the truth. Whether in war zones or under oppressive government , journalists are often targeted for doing their work. To protect them government and international organisation must create and enforce laws that guarantees press freedom. In the areas of conflict journalists needs safety equipment , secure locations and proper training to minimize the risks. Using technologies like encrypted communication can help protect sources and ensure that reporters can work without fear. Independent organizations should also monitor and report attacks on journalists to make sure that their rights are protected. When the press is free it ensures that people are informed and that corruption and injustice is exposed out to people.
Yulia Sarostina is doing the right thing by speaking out the dangers that are faced by the journalists . Journalism is essential for revealing the truth, and when journalists are silenced , corruption and injustice grow . Though it is risky to speak out , Yulia's courage is helping to shine a light on these issues . By raising awareness , she shows the world how important is it to protect the journalists. If more and more people support press freedom , it could lead to stronger protection and more safer conditions for reporters everywhere. Yulia's actions can inspire change , and in the end , it is the truth that wins.
I think that the journalist who tell the truth should be protected and governments or organizations could offer journalists better security in warzones or other dangerous places. For example when journalists go to Ukraine to present the situation in the war, they risk their lives because at any moment they could be shot or hit by a rocket and organizations could offer them protective gear, a safe place where they could stay and evacuation plans in case of an emergency.
To protect journalists from governments that want to stop them from reporting, there should be implemented stronger laws that defend freedom of speech and there should be sanctions against any government that tries to silence journalists. Also if journalists have a strong public support, it would be hard for the government to punish the journalists as the people would oppose this decision.
Yulia is doing the right thing by talking about this problem because she raises awareness and brings attention to the dangers that journalists face. By talking she can inspire more people to support freedom of speech and push for a change. However if no one talks about this, it will never change.
In my opinion, I believe Yulia is doing absolutely amazing by speaking out about the problem of journalists. It's important to apprise people about the dangers surrounding journalists during war zones. Afterall, press is the most important aspect in democracy, journalists' job is to keep us informed and aware about whats happening in their country. So yes, Yulia is right about so boldly speaking out about this problem because it can lead to a positive change and inspire actions to be taken upon this. Infact, I have seen similar problem in my country but no one addresses it. Like, if there are matters that involve certain politicians (for example), they quickly silence the media for "prying" in and even threat or sometimes harm the journalists. But journalists are not wrong here; they are just doing what is right and what is to be done. They should not take orders from anyone IF it's about hiding or censoring some media content that concerns public!
I think they should make countries and government pay fines if they hurt or murder journalists. I also think they should make a safe area for the journalists during the war. yulia is doing the right thing by speaking to the people.
We have been talking about this at class and we have reach the conclusion that it is a big problem and lots of people don´t now about it. We now that jounalists are living a difficould situation and we think that Yulia is doing the right thing. From my point of view if Yulia is telling this to us is because it is really difficould for them to communicat and report news. I think a journalist should write whatever he or she wants without disrespect anyone and saying true facts. An idea we have had in class it was to creat a global association, doesn´t matter if they are not in the same country or with the same cultures but to protect each other and inform people about what is happening. The association will not been controlled by the government and every jounalist could be there and it will be like a "save place" to publish and interact between them without fake news.
I see that journalists should be protected. Journalists are the ones that tell the truth about the war (or special governmental operation as Russia might say). If Journalists didn't exist, only the the information the government wants us to know will be known by the public. Over 500 journalists were imprisoned or presecuted because of doing their job of telling the truth, if journalists didn't we would know very little information about the war. Yulia is doing the right thing by persisting to tell the truth even if the Russian army is after her. Yulia's collegues where improsined because of doing their job the right way and not saying that Russia did everything right.
I think in the world we live in, freedom of expression is essential to avoid conflicts or even denounce them. I think that in order to be able to protect as many journalists as possible wanting to tell the truth it would be necessary to create a sort of journalism council where the different journalists wanting to testify to the truth in complete safety would come because the council would be preserved by a "peace" treaty to avoid creating conflicts between the different countries which would make it up. In the case of journalists who find themselves in a war zone, it would be necessary to either create a military unit which would protect them or else it would be necessary to create a hidden cell where the journalists would meet to be able to tell the truth without a permanent fear of being killed.
I think Yulia is doing well to talk about this issue because it is important to fight for the safety and freedom of journalists. It is even essential to talk about it because I think that many people do not know the risks of the profession of journalist, notably I thought that it was a rather calm and secure profession. But it's quite the opposite because it's a dangerous job because in certain countries you have to know how to moderate your words because if you say even one thing wrong you risk being arrested or even killed.
So I think that in today's world journalists like Yulia should be able to tell the truth in complete safety without being afraid of being arrested or killed.
Yulia Starostina is definitely doing the right thing by speaking out about the problems people are facing because of the war between Russia and Ukraine. So journalists, like her, deserve to be able to tell the truth and remain safe without having to face punishment and oppression from governments.
Journalists from all over the world could set up their own foundation which ensures they are protected from governments so they can report freely. Other countries or civilians from those countries could help with that by funding the organization or donating money or equipment. That way, if any country tries to suppress or harm journalists, it will face trouble from the law (for example, human rights).
Sadly, this might not be a reality because some countries have imposing governments that prioritize ideology (such as Russia), but if a foundation were to be set up for journalists, they would be able to freely spread the truth about topics such as wars and conflicts, like the Russia-Ukraine war.
In my opinion Yulia is doing the right thing by speaking about this problem, I think journalist need certain protection, as we all need to be informed of everything that happens in the whole world, also the journalists may need to be protected in some warzones, for example, in Ukraine many journalists have died informing us about the war, and I think that it is completly unfair for them.
So in my opinion journalists should be protected from wars because there are not soldiers, there are journalists.
I believe that journalists play a key role when it comes to mantainig everyone informed about the nowadays news. Also, they shuold have much more protection, because they literraly risk there lifes for everybody else. For instance, the goverments should put some mediations with it such us free risk places for them to stay and so on, plus some bodyguards for them whenever they go out to the street and they go to dangerous places even some equipement for own-defense and protction.
Protecting journalist in the Ukranien war is essential to ensure freedom of the press and access to accurate information. It is essential that they have security teams, coverage of conflict areas and international legal support. Their work is key to reveling reality and combating misinformation.
First of all, I think it´s a very, very important job that is not reconized enough. Their job is go to a country at a war, putting their lives at risk, to inform their country with the truth, and its important to say with the truth. Many journalist may be forced to tell lies abut the situations in different countries at war. It´s very important to tell the truth about the facts and thus be able to achive the right to freedom of expression. The safety of war journalists should be more controlated as they are continually exposed to dangerous situations. Obviusly, although there is organisation, there are many situations that can´t be controlled and that si the danger of going to those places to inform.
About Yulia , there are difficult topics, but, talking about them and telling the truth will always be the right thing to do.
We should all be grateful for the sacrifice and effort of these journalist.
I think journalist are incredibly important to inform the rest of the war. But when there are lifes on the line a lot of action and precaution should be taken into acount. I belive that countries should join forces and try to send a couple of journalist, not necesarily from every country. The information that they bring back could be translated to other languages. With this measure more people are save and the ones who are in the front lines can recive more help since they have more money.
I think they could protect themselves with drones to observe their movments and make sure that they are not injured or dead, and if it hapens go quicky to help them. But the drones could get hack and it would be even worse.
I think journalist that tell the truth or the war are very important figures. They are the ones that inform the rest of the planet about what is happening and they also can get more information since they are there. So, in my opinion they should be protected by having bodyguard, for example.
Can you imagine a world, where you are in the country, where severe wars happen, hearing the sounds of bombs and seeing your own native is destroying, but you are holding mikes, there is question mark for your life. This is the role of journalists in Russia.journalists are the persons who are in the trap of trouble, struggling to reach the correct news to the society.Spreding of fake news, are troubling millions and millions of journalists, across the globe. More journalists face attacks, in the wars, they are protesting for they life but still they are trying their best to reach people about that situation. For this their should be a shield for journalists, so I want to propose a strong type of dress called "JAUNTY JACKET FOR JOURNALISTS", jaunty means being lively with confidence. This is a protective dress, provided to journalists as a shield 🛡️ from the attacks. This will really safeguard each and every journalists from the attacks and they can reach the current situation and news to the people without any harmness to them, during the war. At conclusion, I want to finish it with a quote, "JOURNALISM IS THE FIRST ROUGH DRAFT OF HISTORY", so let us support journalists and lead our history, the past...
Hi frank_blueberry, and thank you for an interesting comment. I'm very interested in your idea of a jaunty jacket for journalists. Do you mean a physical jacket, like a thick protective vest? I think some journalists may already wear these in conflict zones.
Yeah!
I mean a physical jacket to safeguard journalists from attacks. As you said, some journalists in russia have the protective vest and safety jackets. But, not all . The government of russia has been providing safety jackets to their official journalists, connected to military. The government of russia is not focusing on the protection of the local journalists. The government will take care of the welfare of their official journalists, but they are paying no attention to local journalists. According to my point of view, comparing to official government journalists, local journalists protest for their life and trying their best to reach reach the people about the incidents and news. Official journalists have government offices to safeguard from severe attacks like bombs. But, local journalists do not know, which second, the bomb will blast and absolutely their is a question mark for their life . The huge difference and discrimination between the official and local journalists is extremely remarkable. This breaks my heart..
I believe that Yulia is in the right for speaking out about this topic, as Russia's people should be allowed freedom of speech. The fact that Russia is stopping journalists from informing others about the truth, could suggest the Russian government knows to the full extent how terrible their actions are, but they still are not going to stop. So they prevent people from being informed the truth, spreading propaganda, so therefore preventing people from having freedom and keeping them from protesting and possibly removing some of their human rights.
By Yulia speaking out this could cause Russian society to want to make a change, to know the truth, voice their opinions.
The safety of journalists is a matter of great concern and urgency. Every day, brave men and women risk their lives to bring us the truth, often in the face of great danger. It's our responsibility to ensure they have the protection they need to do their job. This means providing them with safety training, secure communication channels, and protective gear when reporting from conflict zones. Governments must also play their part by enforcing laws that safeguard journalists from harassment and violence. Moreover, we must raise awareness about the importance of journalist safety and the crucial role they play in holding those in power accountable. By working together, we can create a world where journalists can report the truth without fear of reprisal. Yulia's courage in speaking out about this issue is truly inspiring, and we must continue to amplify her voice and the voices of all journalists who risk everything to bring us the truth.
In today's world, journalists face increasing danger for simply doing their jobs. Whether covering conflicts in warzones or reporting on oppressive governments, the risks have never been higher. The ongoing Russia-Ukraine was for example, has exposed the extreme dangers journalists face on the frontlines. Many have been killed, injured or forced into exile, while others are detained or harassed simply for documenting events. To ensure truth prevails, it is crucial that governments, international organizations and media outlets take steps of protection.
In conflict zones, journalists must be provided with safety training, protective gear and secure communication tools. Media organizations should collaborate with local groups to create evacuation plans. On a global scale, legal frameworks should be strengthened to hold governments accountable for targeting journalists. Pressure from organization like the United Nations and Reporters Without Borders is essential to ensure press freedom is upheld and journalists are shielded from violence.
Yulia's decision to speak out on this issue is vital. By raising awareness, she contributes to the dialogue that can lead to stronger protections for journalists.
In conclusion, protecting journalists ensures he integrity of the truth, especially in conflict zones like Russia-Ukraine war, highlighting the need for international solidarity.
THANK YOU!
In my opinion, to keep journalists safe, especilly in dangerous places like warzones, we should give them proper trainig, protective equipment and secure ways to talk without getting spied on. IInternational laws should protect them as civilians. Against governments that want to shut them up, strong laws should stop persecution and spying. International pressure and support can help too. Yulia speaking up is importnat because it makes people care and take action, even though it is risky for her. Her barvery shows why protecting journalists and letting them do their jobs freely is so important.
Hello Topical Talk. Protecting journalists requires a smart approach. For example, in warzones, this includes comprehensive safety training, great and strong communication, and protective gear. Combating government repression necessitates advocating for press freedom by using international pressure (like UN sanctions), legal frameworks protecting journalists from harassment, and supporting organizations that defend their rights. People like Yulia, who speak out about these dangers, have and play a vital role in raising public awareness. Their activism helps create an environment where journalists can safely report that truth without fear of retribution.
I agree with many other Topical Talkers, I believe journalist should be protected under laws and organizations, have availability to secure communication, and receive some sort of self-defense knowledge. Protecting journalists is a CRUCIAL aspect to preserve free speech, International agreements like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, upholds their right to report freely. However, in order to save their face and hide the truth, many governments undermine such agreements with loopholes. We need to reinforce these loopholes that make it illegal to silence journalist' voices. By not doing so, this means that journalists are vulnerable in a war zone, however, physical protection training and proper gear as well as emergency evacuation plans are a solution for them to navigate the challenges of a war zone. Furthermore, digital security is also important...Many Journalists are hacked and surveilled by their government so by safeguarding their resources of communication we can prevent unauthorized access and thus allow the reporter to freely report without fearing for their lives. By focusing in and honing these weaknesses, we can ensure that journalists can continue speaking the truth safely, without fearing their environments. Yulia did right by speaking out about the problem. We need more people to speak out, more voices to be heard, we need people to be aware of the governments doings in order for there to be action against it, so yes, she did the right thing.
I think journalists must be more protected, by soldiers for instance. They could also be protected with helmets and such things . They also need to be less visible by the enemy, in cars or hidden.
Journalists are a very important part of society. However, when completing these jobs, they must have patience and must be able to endure and expect any unfortunate circumstances that may arise.
When reporting on sensitive news subjects, journalists must be careful on what they say about the circumstance, especially if they choose to pick a target audience or side with a certain argument. Journalists can be prepared to expect the worst in certain situations, such as war zones when reporting on vital news traveling through today's media. When reporting on these things, they must keep their personal information and view on the subject out of the reports to keep their privacy stable and secure. Journalists may also require prolonged training in order to be at caution with any adversity that may hinder them from completing their jobs. While Yulia may be at risk when raising concern about this problem, it is the right thing to do. She conveys integrity and courage when speaking about this matter, informing her initial audience about how this problem could affect not only journalists where she resides, but journalists around the world.
I think Yulia is definitely doing the right thing by speaking up about this problem journalists have to face. It’s not fair that they just want to do their job but suffer from telling the truth; it needs to change. So, I was thinking that there should be some safe spaces in every country where journalists can go to write down what they see, hear, and everything going on. Supporters who want this situation to be solved can provide a special space for journalists- maybe hidden away from everyone or even underground- and they can, for once, do their job in peace with no threats and no need to be scared. However, I believe that other journalists should follow in Yulia’s steps and speak up- they can’t put up with this forever. People need to know that they are suffering and must do something about it. Citizens who support journalists can tell their mayor or prime minister/president that the problem has to be fixed and soon. If the journalists have someone important on their side, they can be protected from the government and finally just do their job properly. In conclusion, with all my ideas above, we can solve the issue that journalists are facing.
Yulia is definitely doing the right thing about speaking out about this problem because it is really very important to protect journalists from censorship and pressure from the government when they actually want to speak the truth. Parents teach children that always speak the truth then why are journalists forced to report untrue news to the public. I really want to ask- why?
Aiming to create a free and safe environment for journalists and media workers, in 2012, the United Nations developed in a participative and multi-stakeholder manner the first-ever systematic global strategy to protect journalists, India also has a law for the protection of the journalists.
I really want this censorship to stop and want that the public gets to know the truth.
From my perspective, journalists in Russia and Ukraine are really just trying to do their job right by telling the truth. The government, though, does not support that and they want to be seen as the nice people who do not provoke or try to harm other countries. This leads to the journalists being imprisoned or poisoned, while all they are trying to do is be honest and not take anyone's side. I believe that all of this should immediately change, since many citizens may not know the truth about what is really happening in their country, resulting in them making wrong choices about voting, policies and social issues due to the fact that false information has been given to them, leading to an adverse future for the society.
The most important for me talking of war is information, the fact of telling the truth and telling a story of a series facts.A way to protect journalism in war is to have war law´s that protect journalism of being in danger. Also we could develop a way to have cameras on war hotspots to capture the crude reality about war beacuse if we inform the danger and the horrible reality that is war we could make people change their opinion about it.I have the idea that the best way to stop this is with talking and what better way of talking that with real information.
There can be many journalists but the ones who tell the truth are very rare to find. They either get imprisoned or are given threats regarding their life's and of their family's. So these people should be protected at all costs. These are the rare gems that we find, and their importance in a country's growth is indeed very important.
So some protective measures that can be taken to make the insurance of the lives of such journalists is to them being given special security. Also, journalists support whoever they think might be corrected but this shall not be the reason why their lives are endangered and they are imprisoned. So, all countries collectively shall make an agreement to protect the on ground reporters and the ones who spend their time in the warzone. This shall be done because after all journalists are the ones who reveal the truth behind actual conditions in the warzones and at last, just tell their opinion, which isn't a reason for someone to get threats.
This balance has to be made for journalists all around the globe. Whether they be in war or not, Their lives are as important as a person playing a large character in the society, Due to THEIR contribution.
I think that journalists should have a petition that shows they want to have a secret society where they can tell the truth. This would help the communities so they can be aware .This would they can help. This would protect journalists and stop them from being killed. This could make the world a better place because this would make people aware to help.
In my opinion, journalists' safety is often ignored, despite them shining light on injustice, corruption and conflict, so, how can we protect them? Well, in warzones, journalists need specialized training, protective gear and clear identification (like press badges recognized by all sides) to ensure their survivability. Organizations like Reporters Without Borders already offer safety workshops but funding and access must expand. Conflict zones demand "safe corridors" for reporting and evacuation plans to ensure journalists have safe passage out of any warzone. News outlets and NGOs could establish emergency shelters or they could develop partnerships with local groups to provide refuge.
Against governments looking to censor journalists, international pressure is key. Countries that value free speech must sanction regimes that jails journalists and/or demand transparency in legal trails. Strengthening global allegiances like the UN's Plan of Action for Journalists' Safety can help. Secure communication (encrypted apps and anonymous sources) and legal aid networks are needed to stop governments from victimizing reporters.
By speaking out, Yulia amplifies a crisis that many ignore. Her voice rallies support, pressures authorities to change and reminds the world that silencing journalists harms us all. But we need to stand by her through petitions, funding legal defences or spreading awareness.
Protecting journalists isn't just about saving lives, it's about defending truth. And always remember, a journalist's plight is our fight.
Protecting journalist who want to spread the truth, mostly in high-risk environments like warzones or oppressive governments, require a large developed plan. Comprehensive safety measures should be put in place, such as cyber, and physical countermeasures, weapons, and a secure location. Advocacy groups should also gather together with journalist to prioritize their safety and help them spread the truth.
We have benn discusing this point at class, this problem afects everyone because we are all connected through what we see or listen on the TV or the radio. Thanks to journalists we can all know what is happening in our country or at an international level and if they stop working as journalists we are not going to know what is happening in the world and we are not going to be able to help them. In addition, if we don't know what is happening and the problems that there are in some countries more problems can be created and more people would be affected.
I think that we can create an association of journalists all over the world to protect them while they are in their country or in a different one.
I believe that protection, other than the individual protecting themself is a pretty tall order. War is a messy thing, nothing is ever certain and the tides are constantly shifting to either side. Protecting journalists is also a game, if they are spewing your propaganda then of course you will keep them. If they aren't working on furthering your agenda then you jail them and label them psychos. I personally think all people should be protected but in the case of journalistic war press, it just comes with the job unfortunately.
Ensuring the safety of journalists in conflict zones requires robust training, secure communication, and strong legal protections. Advocacy for press freedom is vital, along with international oversight to hold governments accountable for any threats against those reporting on critical issues.
Journalists in war zones face grave dangers from violence and government repression. We must enhance safety training, provide secure communication tools, and advocate for stronger legal protections to protect their critical work. Global solidarity is essential to empower them to report freely and safely.
I think that it is crucial that we take extreme measures to protect journalists operating in warzones and unstable regions like the frontlines of the Russo-Ukrainian war. Misinformation is extremely widespread in this day and age and it is imperative that unbiased journalists can continue to fight against propoganda amongst Western and Eastern sources.
To accomplish this, I think the United Nations should play a more active role in enforcing international law, even in highly contended territorial zones like the battlegrounds of the Dniper and Novorossiya. UN Member-States, especially those on the Security Council, should contribute more soldiers to the UN's peacekeeping forces and act against unruly nations that seek to supress the free flow of information. Countries should band together to embargo and persecute states and individuals that endanger civilians in any sense, including wartime journalists.
While this might not completely guarantee that journalists will be free to report on warzones without being inherently at risk of suffering casualties, it would incentivise states to act in accordance of the Geneva Conventions and to ensure thst civilians remain unharmed despite their governments' political struggles.
The issue of journalist safety is a pressing concern worldwide, and several risks of assault or killings pose threats to reporters who strive to report the truth. But several strategies can be put in place help protect and prevent any danger towards journalists.
1.INTERNATIONAL ADVOCACY
International pressure can and has played crucial roles in thriving for change and safer environments.Countries and organizations can advocate for the freedom of press and speech and hold those accountable that threaten journalists. Not only that those countries should strive for freedom of press for their own citizens too.
2.TRAINING PROGRAMS
Organizations can provide training programs and support networks to provide comprehensive training on risk assessment and emergency response.Support groups can be made for journalists all around the world who are facing legal trouble where legal aid can be applied and physiological support from others.
3.EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS
Developing clear emergency protocols for journalists operating in high- risk environments.
4.COLLABORATIONS WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS/POLICY CHANGES
Partnering with local humanitarian and human rights organizations to further ensure journalist safety.Advocating for policy changes at both national and local levels like creating stricter laws to penalize violence against journalists and encouraging transparency in government actions that threaten press freedom.
And as for Yulia for speaking out she definitely should, kudos to her for standing up against the retaliation for exposing the truth. She very courageous and brave.
To protect the journalist who want to speak the truth, the international organisations and government can:
Enact and enforce laws which provides a safeguard for freedom of press and protect journalist from violence and harrassment.
Resources and training can be provided to help journalist to work safely in war zones.
Strict action must be taken against people who attack or detain people.
Independent media outlets and the journalist who risk their lives and speak the truth must be supported.
Ensure an independent judiciary which can prosecute and investigate journalist harrassment.
Establish mechanisms for addressing and investigating government wrongdoing against jounalist.
Yulia is doing absolutely right by speaking out about the obstacles and dangers faced by journalists. By sharing her personal experience she is raising awareness about freedom of press and the need to protect journalist . Her voice is helping to push justice and protection for journalists .
I my opinion journalists should be protected by the government. Russia, for the past three years has used false propaganda to ensure that their population supports their acts against Ukraine. Yulia mentions that this false news had been modified by the government and that they have been spreading the news that its not a war, its just a "special military operation". Examples like this demonstrate that Journalists are needed because someone has tell the real side of the story and not just the black and white version. Journalists have been silenced and this needs to stop. Unbiased news is a basic human right.
War is overall a very horrible, heartbreaking situation that no country should have to go through. It is not the civilians fault or something they could prevent so, therefore, they shouldn’t have to lose their lives and be unsafe. Specially journalists, risk their lives trying to make the world know what’s really happening and trying to get help from other countries. So it is really unfair that these people are dying and losing their safety when they are doing good to their countries.
There should be a “safe area” that the enemy is not allowed to touch or something similar for journalists to be safe while doing their job. These journalists could have anonymous reports so that the opposite country doesn’t do anything to them if they post something they don’t want them to post.
Yulia is doing great by posting and speaking about this problem as other governments could help her and every journalist in these countries. I really hope the war ends soon so that journalists, and everyone, are safe again.
I think there is no such prominent way to protect journalist from government as government and its agent are spread all over the country. If they live outside the country they can't report accurately. They can use drones and all but again it can be shot down at any moment.
But Yulia maam's work gives journalist some strength to report freely. I really appreciate that she gave us a clear picture of journalists. Its very risky as we know what happened to her colleagues.
I personally think there should be a organization for journalist too. Just like W H O there can be a W J O to protect journalists. If any nation suppresses journalists they will face some consequences like no trade or no help from other countries. So that we can ensure no country dares to do that to journalists.
I believe journalists are like the shining lights in a dark world. They bring us the truth, no matter how hard it is to hear. Without them, we wouldn't know about the struggles people face in dangerous places. They are the voice of those who cannot speak for themselves, and their work is so important, it's like saving lives by telling stories. But right now, journalists face huge dangers. In warzones, they could be shot at or caught in explosions just by doing their job. This is so unfair! They should be given special protection, like safe zones and equipment, to help keep them safe. Just like how soldiers wear armor, journalists need their own protection.
Governments who try to stop journalists from reporting are doing something really wrong. It's like they're stealing someone's freedom to speak, which is a basic right we all deserve. If governments are scared of the truth, they shouldn't hurt journalists to hide it. That's why Yulia is doing such an amazing thing by speaking out. She's brave because she's showing the world how dangerous it is to be a journalist in places like Russia. If more people hear her story, maybe the world will come together to protect journalists everywhere. We need them to keep telling the truth and keeping us informed, no matter the cost!
So, how can we, as a global community, ensure the safety and freedom of journalists who risk their lives to inform us?
From my point of view, Yulia's action of talking about the threat journalists who defend truth and independent journalism are living, how Russia is a regime which doesn't allow freedom of speech and undermines any type of opposition and the death of innocent Ukrainian civilians, is essential at a time when thousands of people (which aren't Ukrainian or Russian) are believing Russian propaganda, which has infested politics and social media, and defending the Kremlin's actions. Moreover, with journalists telling the truth and saying how there is already more people against the war protesting the Russian government, the effects of propaganda over the population can be undermined and more people can be less afraid to join these protests if they see they are not alone. The work of journalists like Yulia, helps us see what is happening and what each of us have to do to help. For example, if russian journalists are being attacked in foreign countries or in Russia, first of all we should grant all of them asylum and then give them protection and security or even give them a new and safer identity. Actions are made depending on the information we get, that is the reason why true journalists are so essential in every conflict and event.
Protecting journalists is non-negotiable. We demand stronger legal protections, robust international advocacy, and heightened public awareness. Comprehensive safety training, support networks, and accountability for perpetrators of violence against journalists are imperative. Additionally, enhancing digital security is essential to ensure their safety in perilous environments.
I feel like the news agencies should provide adequate security for journalists. There are many untouched topics, mainly because of government interference, and it may be very hard for journalists to be safe without security. I also think journalists should be surrounded by securities when they are casting news.
In my opinion, Yulia is doing the right thing by speaking out about the war between Russia and Ukraine. As she states in the video, the government is using twisted tactics such as calling the war a "special military operation". Despite being silenced and forbedinen from reporting on certain aspects like the amount of deaths, it's important to defy the barriers put on free speech and speak out about the millions of people on both sides who have suffered because of the fight.
Being a journalist can be very dangerous. In some countries, telling the truth about war, corruption, or just unfair governments can put their lives at risk. Every year, many journalists are killed or sent to prison just for doing their job. That’s why we need to find ways to protect and suport rhem.
First, journalists in war zones need safety equipment, like bulletproof vests and helmets so thay can be safer. They should also need to be trained to know what to do in dangerous situations and have escape plans. Without this, reporting the news can be too risky.
Protecting them isn't only the goverments responsability, we also have to take action.
In other countries, the government tries to stop journalists from speaking. To stay safe, journalists need secure internet tools, like private networks and secret messages, so no one can find them. Also, big organizations should tell these governments to respect journalists and let them work freely.
Money and legal help are also important. Many journalists are arrested but don’t have the money to defend themselves. There should be lawyers to help them. Safe websites could also be made so they can report problems without fear.
I think Yulia is doing the right thing. I admire her, she is brave to tell the truth, even when it’s dangerous. If no one speaks, all these things will keep happening. But she shouldn’t have to risk her life alone. We have to look for better ways to protect people like her. Maybe one day, telling the truth will not be something dangerous, but until then, we must help those who fight for it.
To protect journalists, especially those in warzones or under oppressive regimes, several measures are vital. Firstly, governments and organizations must establish robust legal protection, ensuring press freedom and safeguarding journalists from censorship, violence, and arbitrary detention. International bodies can play a role by imposing sanctions on governments that target the press and providing support of journalists whi face persecution. Providing physical protection like armoured vehicles or safe zones and access to trauma care is crucial in conflict areas. Additionally, journalists can benefit from digital security training to protect themselves from cyber threats.
Yulia, she is speaking about such issues is likely doing a very right task. By raising awareness about the dangers journalists face, she highlights the importance of press freedom and the need for systemic changes. However, the effectiveness of her actions depends on her platform, the clarity of her message and whether she is calling for specific, actionable reforms. Speaking out can inspire others to act and push for accountability. But it's essential to back words with concrete steps that lead to meaningful support and protection.
Thank You!
I believe that journalists need to be protected and prioritized when they are reporting the truth about events. Journalists need to be versed and knowledgeable of the places they are reporting about to know their consequences and repercussions that may come with reporting about that country or group of people. They should also be knowledgeable about the place they may travel to, to report, since some countries have different laws and procedures when it comes to reporting, even if the news is not about them. And yes, Yulia is doing the right thing about speaking out about this problem because it affects journalists and the public. Journalists are affected because they are being harmed or censored and told what not to say to such an extent that some don't even like their jobs. And the public are being harmed because when journalists that tell the truth are being harmed, the public does not get to be be informed about problems and conflicts in the world effectively and accurately.
Journalists should be protected at all costs not just by their own government but with others and by all, by the people. If they see too many people on the journalists side then they won't be able to punish them all. Journalists can also be hidden in some hidden places so they are not located and prosecuted.
I do think Yulia is doing the right thing because that will get the people to come out of their shell and fight for their freedom of speech and their events happening in their country.
There should be action taken by the public to stop censorship,like- protesting and spreading awareness.Everyone has the right to get true news and what is going on around them. But, government stops the journalists from doing that, which is not correct. Journalists should not be censored by the government and government should not hide their actual mistakes from being published.
Protect journalists from censorship!!
Get true news!!
I would argue that journalists are vital during wartime. Journalists share raw insights into the harsh realities of war, which is necessary for the public to gain geniune, unbiased information regarding the events that are occuring. Russia imprisoning 550 journalists, and many more being killed, restricts the basic human right of feedom of speech. The reason journalists are being targeted is because they go against the propoganda that Russia is using to justify the war. Journalists must be protected otherwise the propoganda will glamourise the war, causing the potential indoctrination of many.
Whilst there are so many ways in which the journalists should be protected, it doesn't seem as though these are possible. Ideally, there would be a safe zone, where journalists and civillians would be safe from the government's wrath. Or, perhaps the Russian government could recognise the need for democracy, lessening the strictness of their inhumane regulations on journalists.
Evacuation is another solution which would ensure journalists safety. From a personal perspective, a decree from the government to possibly evacuate the journalists would be effective in saving their lives; however, this would also create the issue of removing all of the vital political insights regarding the war. Without the up to date information from journalists, there will be nothing to oppose the Russian propoganda.
Therefore, whilst journalists should be protected, it would be extremely difficult to achieve an effective solution, due to the journalists insights being a significant threat to the war.
I think that sometimes we can only protect journalists that have escaped from Russia or are against the war (like Yulia Starostina) and after the persecution of their colleagues they have seeked asylum in other countries. This journalists also suffer attacks when telling the truth from outside Russia, so they must be protected and their safety must be secured always maybe with government agencies giving them bodyguards or new identities or safe locations. Nevertheless, in the front line it is more difficult to protect journalists. In war, there can be a country that respects journalists but also one that doesn't want journalists to see what they are doing and attack them (like Russia in this war). If Ukrainian forces go with and protect these journalists, the journalists have a higher risk of being directly attacked by Russians. The only thing I think is plausible and that is more or less done now is to consider the attack of war journalists as a war crime with serious consequences for the perpetrators, though it is difficult judge the perpetrators. The most realistic thing is to protect exiled journalists by 24-hour protection with bodyguards or new identities and locations.
You are right. Everyone deserves their right including journalist. Journalist are very important in our daily lives because they are one of the major source of information. Russian journalist have fled because of their safety and even though they seek refuge in other countries, they are still haunted down, and even poisoned them in the countries they sought refuge in. Journalist like Yulia are very important as everyone and some of the reasons journalist should be protected are:
1. Journalist deserve their freedom as every other person. The war has caused the death of so many people but Russians still persecute journalist even in turmoil. This discussion is also linking to facts and perspectives because in the case of Russia, the government wants the news to told in their perspective by force which is coerce. We might not know their reason but it is wrong and as a result of this, innocent lives have been put to death because of doing the right thing.
2. There is no way that we can get to know what is happening around when journalist aren't there and we won't be able to help or support countries during critical times like the Russia- Ukraine war. Journalist are the ones who go deeper into the story and sometimes risk their lives just to get facts about a particular event. Apart from reporting the news, they are also supposed to tell the truth about any story no matter any circumstance but the Russian government are threatening the lives of journalist for saying the truth.
Many other journalist are facing this as well. We have find means of protecting journalist's lives.
Journalists play a crucial role in keeping the world informed, specially in dangerous situations like warzones or under oppressive goverments. To protect them, several measures can be taken:
1-In warzones journalists should be provided with protective gear and security training. News organizations can also work with international agencies to ensure safe reporting conditions.
2-Goverments and international bodies should have stronger laws to protect press freedom and to punish those who harm journalists.
3-In countries where goverment try to silence media, journalists should have acces to encrypted communication and secure methods to publish reports without reveling their identities.
4-Organizations as the Committee to protect journalists (CPJ) and Repoters without borders (RWB) provided legal, financial, and emergency assistance to journalist in danger. More support like this can help to keep them safe.
Journalists are courageous heroes who risk their lives to tell important stories to the world. But they are also targeted, silenced and killed for doing their job. We must protect them so they can do their work safely – and so the world can get honest, unbiased information.
In war zones, journalists are particularly vulnerable to attack—sometimes deliberately targeted by militants or governments. So they need strong support systems, both physical and digital, that can include military-level survival training, encrypted communications, and AI-powered surveillance.
Press vests and badges should carry international legal protections, and violations should be subject to global sanctions or diplomatic consequences. Media organizations and human rights groups should partner to develop emergency extraction teams to extract journalists from conflict zones.
Journalists outside war zones are also at risk from governments that seek to silence them through intimidation, imprisonment or worse.
Educating people about the dangers facing journalists is key. The more people who understand the work of reporters, the more governments and media organizations will be pressured to take their protection seriously. Protecting journalists means protecting information itself. We all have a role to play in supporting press freedom and advocating for stronger protections.
As I reflect on the bravery of journalists who risk everything to uncover the truth, I'm reminded of the profound importance of protecting these courageous individuals. In war zones, journalists are often the only ones who can shed light on the atrocities and injustices that would otherwise remain hidden.
To keep them safe, we must provide them with the necessary tools and training to navigate these treacherous environments. This includes access to secure communication channels, reliable transportation, and advanced safety equipment.
But safety is only half the battle. Journalists also need protection from governments that seek to silence them. This is where international organizations, such as the UN, can play a crucial role in establishing and enforcing strict laws and regulations safeguarding journalists' rights.
Yulia's courage in speaking out about this issue is a testament to the power of the human spirit. Her determination to create change is a beacon of hope in a world where truth-telling is increasingly under threat.
Let us stand in solidarity with Yulia and all the brave journalists who risk everything to bring us the truth. Let us demand that our leaders take action to protect them.
I think journalists could be protected from censorship who want to tell the truth by only a few rigid methods like public protests and campaigns. If we speak for our journalists, the government might stop there censorship during the warm because of the pressure of the public. And in a democracy, people could also remove their current government if they keep on censoring the journalists.
Yulia is definitely doing the right thing by speaking out about this problem because of we don't get to know that this is a problem how would we solve it.
Journalist should be protected at all costs, they should have personal security, also should not be exposed a lot and leave in a home all together
Journalist should be protected at all costs, they should have personal security, also should not be exposed a lot and leave in a home all together
Journalists who want to tell the truth must be kept in a place where is safe for them, protected if there is an attack.
Yulia is right telling about it because everybody needs to know about how people are killed for telling the truth. And that way people can help many journalists.
But in the contrary is bad to say it because the government will know about and go to catch you.
In my opinion, Yulia is doing a great and aswell risky job by informing us about the real situation that are living at this moment the people that work as journalists. It is a very important job because they inform us about the real things that are happening right now in the war, so, as she said, "Journalists must tell the truth, or they are not journalists anymore, they are something else". That is the point of being a journalist, to inform the people about the truth because, if we don't have any journalist or people working as journalists, we wouldn't know anything about what is really happening in the war, for example, we wouldn't know anything about the lots of inocents ukranian people that have died in the war and we know it thanks to the journalists.
They have an important role in our society by defending the truth against the lies that others could tell us, so we should protect them at any cost if we want to know more about the real things that are happening there. They shouldn't flew away from their country avoiding prision or, even out of their country, having fear about their families being attacked or being poissoned by someone else. They shouldn't treat this people as that because they are risking their lives by being at the front informing us about the truth and Yulia has done an important decision by telling us about what is their reallity right now so we can help them by having ideas of how they could be protected against the ones that don't want them to tell the truth.
First of all, Protecting journalists is crucial for the health of any democratic society. Journalists play a vital role in exposing corruption, human rights abuses, and other societal issues, helping to hold governments and corporations accountable. They provide accurate and reliable information, combating the spread of misinformation. To protect journalists, governments must implement strong legal protections, including laws that safeguard press freedom and shield reporters from censorship, harassment, or imprisonment. News organizations can provide safety training and secure communication methods, such as encrypted platforms, to ensure the safety of journalists in high-risk environments. Furthermore, international pressure and advocacy by human rights organizations are essential to prevent attacks on press freedom. Public awareness also plays a significant role in rallying support for journalists. By promoting press freedom, providing legal and financial support, and using technology to protect journalists, we can ensure that the media continues to serve for society
I want to help the journalist because no one deserves to die or go to jail because they are trying to spread information and awareness to others. But, I can only think of two things that can help journalists. We can either come together and fight for a rule that is incorporated to all journalists around the world that says, Truthful Journalists are allowed to work without the fear of dying or jailed by other governments, only if the people that are being reported are comfortable with the recording and publishing of the themselves. Or we can give safety kits or backpacks to journalists or maybe even bullet proof vests and every journalist needs to be trained how to run fast and far just incase their presence is not accepted by the people and government or any war is going on the country.
Yes, Yulia is doing the right thing because she is addressed to the problem and spreading awareness to others. She helps people understand a problem in the industry of Journalism. this will cause some people to stand for the solution which can help solve the problem and save countless lives as well.
Journalists should be protected from censorship. They should be given the freedom to publish the truth. In my opinion, I think that there should be rallies and strikes of journalists so that the pressure is applied on the government and they are forced to stop their censorship and let the public knowledge the truth of not only the war but every single thing going on around them through the journalists and media.
Personally, I think that working as a journalist in these situations of war and conflict it is very dangerous and mentally hard.
When we talk about the safety of journalists, we must stop and think about how we can protect them so that they feel free to tell the whole truth.
In order to make this possible, governments should implement more laws to improve the work of journalists and make them feel safe when telling the real truth. We all have to insist more on the countries to apply these kind of laws.
The journalists should have their safety guaranteed when working and also they must have an area where they feel safe having the necessary material or weapons to be able to protect themselves for the goverments who want to stop them from reporting.
Seeing the testimony of Yulia has shocked me a lot because I didn´t know the reality of the journalists and how they "work" or its consequences if they try to tell the truth. Yulia is doing the right thing, she is informing us about something very important that few people know about.
There are some processions that are fundamental one of them is journalins, wich connects us to the truth and informs us of what is happening in the world, as in this case Russia's war against Ukraine. Howevwer, many of these workers face verbl and physical attacks for oing their job.According to some websites such as Reporters Without Borders, in 2024 there were more than 550 people imprisioned and it was the second deadliestyear for the press in the last decade. For this not to happen age ain, the population must protest against goverments that try to silence them and support them so that they can inform us freely. In my view a very necessary thing that should be and to ensure that international organisations monitor their safety. One possible solution would be a global fund to be raised from donations and international bodies to provide more security for journalists. Many reporters are incredible in their work show courage day after day. Yulia Starostina's courage is admirable as she exposes the truth without any filters. Iused to think that being a journalist was uncomplicated but now I clearly see the difficulty they face on daily basis. If we don't protect them, who ill tell us what is going on around the world?
To begin with, I want to clarify that forme, in the war, journalists are very important, because I think that is the only way to know what is really happening in the battlefront.
Taking into account that in the battlefront there are a lot of soldiers, in my opinion the easiest and best way to protect them, apart from helmets and bulletproof vests, is putting a scuad whose objetive is protect them.
I believe Yulia is doing the right thing by speaking out about this problem. The purpose a journalist serves is informing others about the TRUTH on important, life-threatening situations. If a journalist cannot do that then all hope for corruption not reaching the news is lost. Yulia is willing to risk her life, just to help with what she knows how to do best.
Journalists are the ones who reveal the truth behind the scenes, just as Yulia said. However, in Russia, authorities have restricted their freedom, making it difficult for them to do their jobs. But this isn’t just happening in Russia like what yulia said because her colleagues in Germany, the Czech Republic, Georgia, and many other countries also face similar threats. Yulia is doing the right thing by speaking out about this issue, and we should support her and other journalists who risk their safety to expose the truth. Instead of depending on government officials, we need an independent solution. That’s why I propose the Independent Journalists’ Global Network (IJGN)—a worldwide organization dedicated to protecting journalists, no matter where they are. This network would ensure journalists can report freely without fear of punishment or imprisonment, provide secure platforms for them to share their reports safely, and offer financial and legal support to those facing lawsuits or jail time. With this global independent network, we can make sure that journalists continue their essential work—revealing the truth without fear. Yulia’s courage proves that journalism matters, and we must stand with those who fight for the truth. What do you think? Would this help create a safer future for journalism?
i personaly think that journalist should be in the war because they just getting in the way off a war and make soldiers worry about them they shouldnt go out
I see your point, quick_plum -- but don't you want journalists to be able to report from war zones, so the world knows what is going on? Terrible things can happen if no one is holding armed forces to account, by reporting what is happening on the ground. What do you think?
The bravery of journalists like Yulia Starostina is a beacon of hope in a world where truth-telling can be a matter of life and death. As we witness the alarming rise of journalist intimidation, imprisonment, and even murder, it's clear that protecting these truth-tellers is not just a moral imperative, but a matter of preserving our very democracy.
So, what can we do to safeguard these courageous individuals?
Firstly, let's provide them with the tools to stay safe. This means offering comprehensive safety training, equipping them with secure communication channels, and ensuring they have access to protective gear and emergency support.
Secondly, let's hold governments accountable for protecting journalists. This means advocating for policies that safeguard press freedom, supporting independent journalism, and condemning any attempts to silence or intimidate truth-tellers.
Lastly, let's celebrate the Yulias of the world – those courageous journalists who risk everything to expose the truth. By sharing their stories, amplifying their voices, and honoring their bravery, we can create a world where truth-telling is celebrated, not silenced.
Yulia's story is a powerful reminder that journalism is not just a profession, but a calling – a calling to speak truth to power, to hold the powerful accountable, and to give voice to the voiceless. Let's join forces to protect these truth-tellers, and in doing so, preserve the very fabric of our democracy.
As said by many by having organisations defend the rights of journalists.By relaying on this organisations can be hard but if every country can build a building "journalist's right" where by in any war they can express them selves freely.
Something else is about adding it to the countries' constitution which will make it illegal to hurt journalists while expressing themselves "truthfully".
As for journalist Yuli she was confident and stood out for the truth which gave courage to different journalists who were afraid to speak the truth.
I feel that in my opinion journalists should be protected at all costs as firstly their serving not only a single country but the whole world by bringing the hidden truth to the spotlight. They also face many challenges but they don't let these challenges stop them from reporting truthfully...I feel that the journalists can be protected in many ways like
•They can be given proper security and services
•They can be made to be in a shelter during war time so that they can report.
•they should be given the freedom to publish the news.
•Their families should not be disrespected and should be treated respectfully and be given facilities.
The main things the government should do is to not threaten them or trouble their families.
I feel that Yulia is doing the right thing by bringing the truth to the world and encouraging journalists...
To conclude i feel that the journalists should be given proper recognition respect and treated with dignity for their work.
