Welcome to this week’s competition! Every Monday we’ll open a new competition and the winners will be announced on Fridays. If you win, you’ll get three stars and your entries will be pinned to the top of the discussion!
The Festival has now been going for a while and you’ve had a chance to look at several Topical Talk topics.
Journalists at The Economist believe that, although it’s great to have expertise in one topic, people should try to say how each news story links to the bigger picture to get a better idea of what’s happening in the world.
For example, AI is a big news story – but how might it link to gender inequality or space? And the situation in Syria might seem like it’s a more local news story – but how might it link to other issues because of its themes, such as “power" or “difficult choices”?

I think the topics AI and sustainability and Elon Musk: power , money and influence link because
Elon Musk is a key figure in advancing artificial intelligence (AI) and promoting sustainability. Through Tesla, he uses AI to improve electric vehicles, making them more efficient and reducing carbon emissions, which helps fight climate change. Musk’s other project, Neuralink, explores AI-powered brain-computer interfaces to treat neurological disorders and enhance human abilities. By combining AI innovation with sustainable practices, Musk can i can solve global problems like energy use and environmental damage. Finally my opinion that using AI and elon musk's project collab can create a big impact on sustainability. -

I agree because... Elon Musk has achieve a lot of power with his arrival to the USA goverment, so much power that we could ask ourselves if is to much responsibility for one person, or should he give away some of his funcions. Futhermore, one of his first ideas,along wiht Trump, is to improve the economy if his country betting on the use of virtual currencies. Therefore, it will not be long before they will want to virtualize other parts of our lives, such us the health or even school. I´m sure that at some point, this virtulization will come, and they are going to use AI for it. In conclusion, Elon will took part in the development of tecnology, and he is going to invest million on AI for achive it.

I think the topic about Syria as a turning poin tand Elon musk money power and influence are linked because they both highlight how individual actions and decisions have a global impact. First and foremost how did Syria end up in a situation like that? It where the wrong decisions of the political decisions, foreign interventions and wrong leadership have impacted the whole course of the nationnot only affecting the lives of citizens of Syria but also neighboring country's. In contract Elon musks well decision making mindset and calm thinking have made him advance in life both in wealth and in influencing other people. I like the topic about Elon Musk's money, power and influence. It is a very intriguing topic and a very difficult one to discuss. It might seem like Elon Musk is just the richest man in the world, owns X(formally twitter) and built a self-driving car. It seems like the reason he is being noticed in the news is because of these awesome feats he achieved, but his mistakes also links to bigger issues that affect places as far as Africa affecting the local presence of African chiefs. The insight and troubles Elon Musk's decision can cause is great.

Your opinion on Elon Musk's wealth, power and influence is very closest to me. I agree that musk's achievements such as owning Tesla, space X and Twitter have made him influenancial. However, his decisions can sometimes be very controversial and his actions are not limited to a personal level but that are thought to have an impact on other parts of the world.
Any single decision by Elon Musk can have a larger social and economic impact in a region like Africa, which may affect local social or environment impacts.
How ever, ultimate goal of improving technology and moving towards the future may clash with the local realities and needs of some countries.. Musk's influence can create both positive and negative aspects,,, so I believe that a deep analysis and review of the good or bad aspects of his decisions is necessary....

Hi topical talkers, I think that our first topic, (AI and sustainability) and our last topic (Elon musk, money, power or influence) are linked because in real sense most of the percentage of Elon musk's wealth is from AI, because most of his products are AI powered, and his communication to his followers, AI powered. Coming to think about this AI brought problems upon arrival, one of them being carbon emission, and Elon has problems to on true authority (that is using his power to influence people negatively, both of these problems and their solutions have to be dually sorted in order to avoid more damage in the society.

October 28 2022 officially he bought X (originally named Twitter by noah glass) for $44 billion. and was originally owned by a company called Xcrop. On another note since Elon has become the owner of X there has been an increase of racist and hateful speech launched on the app since he owned it. I think syria should ask an opinion to other countries like for a while it needs an leader or money in which it can recover itself as already the Assad'sfamily rule had come to an end but before that they need to call there country peoples to come to their country because as more than millions of people had left the country already ,so who are all living in the country should convince them and make them come to their country and having election in their country is not possible at all! as because they are in poor economy they can't arrange for an election they don't have enough money to conduct election so they need to choose any other country leader to lead their country and form a government and most probably Syrian's like if their country is an democratic country it was before dictatorship country so now it's a the peak and other country should also support Syria and motivate it that it can be a good country and they have taken the first step that is the leader who will be leading Syria is Ahmed al sharaa after we will see how he rules if he is correct for that country or not let's see 😉

I think the topics "Elon Musk: Money, power, and influence" and "One small step for women,one giant leap for humankind" link because both are about breaking barriers and pushing boundaries, but in different ways. Elon Musk is all about changing the world with his ideas, like electric cars, space travel, and even thinking about going to Mars.
His money, power, and influence have helped him make big changes, but it also shows how much influence one person can have on the world.
On the other hand, the topic about women in space shows how women have been breaking barriers in science and technology. For example, Sally Ride was the first American woman to go into space, and now women like NASA astronaut Jessica watkins are exploring the Moon. These women are pushing boundaries too, but they often face extra challenges because of gender inequality.
Both Elon Musk and the women in space show us that big changes come when people don't let anything stop them from following their dreams. Musk's innovations might take us to space, while women are proving that space is for everyone, no matter your gender.
They're connected by the same idea-moving beyond what people think is possible. -

I think that Elon musk and Syria link because Elon musk has so much power that he could influence decisions like war and elections. In the last lesson we were debating on how they should decide on who should rule Syria. Most of us decided that an election was the fairest way but now I am not sure because if people like Elon musk decide that they don't like one of the candidates then they are going to influence others decisions and make it an unfair election. However, one of the other options was to let another country decide the leader which most said was unfair. I still believe that is unfair but an election would be the same if others are going to influence it. There is no fair way to decide and so I don't know what I would choose if we were to debate about Syria again.

I think that AI and sustainability plus Elon Musk links as Musk creates AI in many ways:Tesla,SpaceX.Musk is a very advanced in AI I would say and Musk creates lots of AI with all his money always advancing his technology.They also link into sustainability as Elon is trying to renew his some of his stuff like rockets the parts he has caught. Firstly, he made what we all know about before which is X, formally known as tweeter. On X, he has alot of followers, estimated to 200 billion followers there, which made him to have alot of power on social media.
Secondly, one of his other companies called tesla, a very mass company which was with one of the fastest car, followed by another one called fastX.

AI can predict what will happen next in Syria like predicting clashes, attacks or any disasters. AI can also be used in health monitoring to make us know which areas in Syria need medical assistance.

To begin with, the topic discussing Elon Musk goes into depth discussing how his power and influence can have both negative effects on the globe. The topic surrounding women and their rights is more focused on equality and innovation. How exactly do these two very different topics connect? Well, to start off, Elon Musk may not be the fondest of allowing women the same rights, considering the backlash he has received for sexist comments. But, there is a correlation between the topics that are being discussed in the Topical Talk festival. Elon's power and influence could help tremendously in the fight of women's rights. His platform X, previously known as twitter, is also an amazing platform where many discussions and fights for women's rights have taken place. I think the topics (news near you and gender inequality link because, the news can talk about how women don't get paid the same as men, and how that can be a really big problem for women who are the main money-earners in their families.
Sometimes, bosses like to hire guys more than girls because they think guys can work whenever they need them. They might think girls, especially moms, are busy with family stuff and take more time off. So, they give guys better pay, which isn't fair at all!
But, you know what? Girls can be really good workers too! Sometimes, they can even do more things at once than guys. I read that in a study! It said girls are better at multitasking, while guys are better at focusing on one thing at a time.
The news should talk about this more! They could show those studies and tell bosses that they should pay people based on how good they are at their job, not if they're a boy or a girl. It's all about being fair! -
I think that Syria and Women in Space link because both topics are trying to overcome barriers. Syria already managed to defeat their dictator and now they are in their turning point. And now this can happen for women and they will have the same chance as men to go into space. For decades women fought to have the same right as men to be astronauts , but this was very hard to achieve because people considered that they should stay home. Now, women are allowed to go into space but there are few women that are astronauts. Only 12% of all astronauts were women, but this could be their turning point and more women could go to space and achieve their dream.

In my opinion, Elon Musk's reputation comes from Social media and his large amount of power, doesn't come close to a stronger power (Later on) that assisted in his sudden rise to power and wealth. The reason I believe that social media was the main reason for Elon Musk's success was due to him being influenced to purchase twitter (or X) which shows he knew about how much influence he could have with owning twitter and having social media at his whim. This also means that he has the power to change peoples minds with his 200 million followers, with a single post, he changed the German polls for the election. But his power only comes from the people who see and agree with his views, this means that all his money doesn't mean much if he doesn't have an audience to sway to his side of view.

Infact, Arab women got the right to DRIVE in 2017! Same goes with Syria. We all know that syrian women face a lot of injustice and discrimination like gender based stereotypes, violence, child marriages and limited legal protection. And syrian women's struggle has doubled due to civil wars and displacement, making it more difficult to deal with. I believe women empowerment can be a huge turning point for syria!

I also think the topics AI and sustainability and One small step for women one giant leap for humankind link beacause during our class dicussions we talked about some people and countries not having equal access to AI and its tools that is some people and countries have more access than others. We also talked about sterotypes when it comes to women and the fact that women don't having enough opportunities and equal opportunities when it comes to opportunities offered to men and women. Men have more opportunities than women. So if access to AI is not evenly distributed then the one giant leap for humankind might never get to a point where it is complete. So how do we break these barriers and sterotypes for women? We can do this by creating opportunities for women to participate in all areas of society including STEM and TECH fields. We have to talk about the biases in the society and address them before we can have a society that is truely successful.

A potential to cause a lot of good for our society and work, and a potential to harm it as well. The topic about Elon Musk talks about powerful people, how they use their power, their influence on society, and the power social media gives people while the topic about AI and Sustainability talks about which one is more important, does it cause greater good or harm, who should be able to use it, and just how sustainable it is. These two topics are connected and even weaved together. Their first link comes from their power, whether through a powerful person using his platform (X) to boost forward new technologies or AI figuring out and determining the solution to world problems. A second way they link is through their ethnics, many people like Mr. Musk himself have expressed worry about AI being used by the wrong people or companies and the potential dangers it would bring, however, this ties into the discussion about AI, for the better of society...should just a few powerful people be the ones to organize and control transformative technologies like it? A third connection and also the biggest between both topics would be their influence on society, like I mentioned before, both topics talk about how they both have the potential to benefit our society in extremely fruitful ways, however...they could also tear down our society. Both can lead to a dependency, global warming, disrespectful, dishonest, and a heavily influenced society.

I believe that the topics that are linked the most are Elon Musk: power, money and influence with AI and sustainability. I think that it can be commonly understood that Elon Musk has a strong connection with AI as his contribution to AI's evolution is massive by making AI robots like Optimus under Tesla, or creating innovative self-returning space rockets under SpaceX. In general, he plays a vital role in the world of AI, being the founder or co-founder of many companies like OpenAI, Tesla, Neuralink and xAI. He has openly talked in interviews about AI and also warned the public of the dangers it can cause if it is under the control of a malcious user. Moreover, I think Elon Musk is also clodely related to sustainability as his solution are not only innovative but also sustainable and eco-friendly and he also donates part of his money to charities focusing on a sustainable future without gases and emissions, spreading the usage of renewable energy sources.

I think the topics Syria as a Turning Point and AI link because AI is being used continuously in warfare. Specifically in using AI as weapons as they are being used for killing people instead of helping people. For example, there are AI drones that were being used by the Syrian government to target civilians. As well as terrorists like ISIS who also use AI drones for their nefarious crimes. I believe this link with AI might be making this ongoing Syrian civil war more bloody and terrible since AI is being sold to corrupt individuals all for the sake of greed. -
I think the topics AI and sustainability and one small step for women, one giant leap for humankind link. One small step for women, one giant leap for humankind is divided to 2 parts the first part is about gender equality and women in space and I will say how each part links to AI.
GENDER EQUALITY AND AI
Well, for gender equality we need to convince people to treat females and males equally and it is mostly by convincing and no body have the budget to go to each single city and convince it so of course we need AI for help in many programs like youtube and add things related to gender equality in the suggestions. Without AI it will not be possible to increase gender equality.
WOMEN IN SPACE AND AI
Without AI it is not women in space it will is practically scarifying women in space. We wouldn't have already reached the space even as we need AI for building and programing to know the coordinates for returning to earth and to do dangerous building task for the rocket.
To conclude, the topic one small step, one giant leap for humankind is totally useless without AI so both are totally linked. -

The 'whats more important' question about AI is a very good question to answer. It makes us realise that we focus too much on improving over sustainability. The question about Elon Musk is great too.
I think they link because Elon Musk does own Tesla and SpaceX. Could Elon Musk make his rockets and cars more sustainable? He could also use AI to come up with ideas out of this world like the batteries in cars being able to power that they could power the acceleration of his cars. These ideas could be moderated to work for rockets too. -

I have been a critic of excessive usage of AI along with its carbon emissions. The emissions have depleted the Earth, and there is an increasing need for a civilization elsewhere. Now comes the right of scientists, specifically astrological ones, to use AI to refine sets of data regarding planetary missions. Here, Elon Musk can play an important role as his technological companies, along with SpaceX, can build an AI database which can not only help humans reach Mars and the Moon efficiently, but can be our pioneer if we were to settle on another celestial body. Musk has made his intentions clear, that he would send the first colony on Mars before his final breath. Gender equality is necessary to build civilization elsewhere. The action must be taken now, to educate young girls about the advantages of being an astronaut, so they can be capable of starting the only human colony outside Earth. Women are also important as they can reproduce, which is crucial for population development on other planets. A link can be made that how will Musk treat women astronauts in the future. Will he favour men over women, in the race of colonising Mars? Will he endorse women education and involvement in space agency? The right to use AI, power and influence of Elon Musk and bold actions to improve gender equality all link as the human race seeks civilization outside the pale blue dot.

I think that the topics of Syria and Elon Musk link because Elon Musk is now a government official meaning he has the power to influence president Trump on this issue. He could advise Trump to support or go against the new Syrian government which is quite a dangerous thing. Trump has already expressed his positions on not supporting the US aiding Syrian rebels during the conflict. If Musk decided that he was against Syria's new government he could not only influence Trump to cut ties with Syria but personally cut possible government funding to Syria due to his new position of cutting government spending.

I think the topics Elon Musk: money, power and influence and AI and Sustainability link because both of them have a lot of power and potential. A potential to cause a lot of good for our society and work, and a potential to harm it as well. The topic about Elon Musk talks about powerful people, how they use their power, their influence on society, and the power social media gives people while the topic about AI and Sustainability talks about which one is more important, does it cause greater good or harm, who should be able to use it, and just how sustainable it is. These two topics are connected and even weaved together. Their first link comes from their power, whether through a powerful person using his platform (X) to boost forward new technologies or AI figuring out and determining the solution to world problems. A second way they link is through their ethnics, many people like Mr. Musk himself have expressed worry about AI being used by the wrong people or companies and the potential dangers it would bring, however, this ties into the discussion about AI, for the better of society...should just a few powerful people be the ones to organize and control transformative technologies like it? A third connection and also the biggest between both topics would be their influence on society, like I mentioned before, both topics talk about how they both have the potential to benefit our society in extremely fruitful ways, however...they could also tear down our society. I think AI and sustainability and Syria: a turning point link because with the war in Syria AI tools can analyse data and help to ensure that aids get to areas with the greatest need. This is very important with the current situation in Syria.
